Way OT, I give you The Amish Outlaws: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=KT0hp3ZtAT8

You have no idea. You can't even buy a car here on Sunday.
-
Why the ABY splitter sir? Just to "mono-ize" your signal out to stage monitors?
-
Since the PE60s are just power amps, I can just plug in from the 1/4" outs and the only thing to know is stereo effects get split along with the XLR outs and I'll miss half of it, if I understand things correctly.

That's good to know man, thanks. I agree with jandrio that the crackling isn't likely to be the POD though. There's gremlins in the wires man...

I live in Pennsyltucky where we're grateful to have bars at all and dry counties still exist. Quite a shock after years in the Air Force in places like California where you buy your Jim Beam along with bananas and milk at Vons.

Hey, thanks for that my friend. Oorah.

See, in my world view what I hear when playing live doesn't really matter, it's what the audience hears. I have always played a miced up amp before and the sound to the crowd was the sound man's problem so to speak. I can only do so much after the pedals (or in this case, patches) are set and volume leveled. I just need to hear enough to stay on target. It's a simplistic world view I suppose, but I cannot get too involved obsessing about tone for my own personal ears to be happy. Now that said, I also want to be as well prepared before that time as I can be. Last night was my first practice with these guys and it was fun. The other guitar player was using a Digitech RP80 I think and while part of me would have said "Really?", he made up for any shortcomings that relatively simple piece of gear may have by being an excellent player, singer and seasoned band member. He has been playing in bands apparently since 1982. So last night I was reminded that ultimately, we can make about any piece of gear sound good to the vast majority of people if we play well and just get close on tone. And yeah, waking up the dog at 1:30am is discouraged. :)

I'd like to chime in some questions here to everyone (and especially jandrio). I am just starting in a semi established band playing classic rock like Led Zep, Black Crows, Bad Company and so on. I am going to use this setup: JTV59 POD HD 500 1 or possibly 2 Power Engine 60s (I have 2) I was think I'd connect JTV59 into the POD via the VDI, and the POD via XLR cables to the PA system for the front of house feed. Then, I was thinking I'd take the 1/4" out(s) of the POD to feed the Power Engines as at least one stage monitor for myself and maybe the second so others could monitor if they wanted. So what are the holes in that idea guys? I see that jandrio is using the effects send as a monitor and honestly that never would have occurred to me to even try. Why is that better than my idea, if I may ask. I'm not knocking it, just trying to be prepapred for a new band I want to succeed in. I may also be singing the odd song or two so having the mic input available is a plus (but I need to get either a dynamic mic or a phantom power provider for the one I have. Thoughts? Suggestions? Gotchas?

Alright, I'm hip to the fact that English isn't your primary language and all kinds of nuance is lost in translation. But here's the thing and Zap nailed it first; When you bought the Variax, there was absolutely no guarantee there would be any further development past that day. Now, realistically we all HOPE there might be wonderful new things waiting for us down the road. And for some, they happened but for you and others, apparently not so much. In any event, I'll give you one reason to be HAPPY with Line6 and their support: They did not FORCE you update your firmware in order to use what you already have as places such as say "The Playstation Network" do at times. You at least can keep the exact same product you must have loved in order to buy so if the updates don't suit you, you can at least carry on as before. I myself forget that simple fact at times and yes, Line6 sort of feeds that hysteria by their marketing approach so that one expects and endlessly long line of wonder after the sale...but that just isn't realistic any more than expecting what updates they DO provide to be 100% wonderful for 100% of the people using the gear. Hopefully, that translates well enough so that ill feelings can be avoided here amongst the faithful....Peace to you as well. -

Crimony, I'm still shocked that after 55 years on this planet, I was being schooled on what a professional musician was. Sorry, I flaked out a bit ;) -
I have noticed this since even before the update. I always have to at least save the patch, go to another atch and return to it in order for it to switch to Exp 2. Even then sometimes it requires further tweaking. In those cases, I have to change it to Exp1, save it again, change it back to Exp 2 and save it yet again and then it sticks. Bizarre behavior, but I'm used to it and once it is finally set, it seems to stay there.

This must be the famous "audio engineer" JohanSmith's brother right here. Thanks for the definition of musician and for insulting the community at large for the crime of kidding with you. I'm smelling troll suddenly. Where's my axe? -
Well that was awesome. Just spent about an hour wringing out this new firmware update and I am appreciative to Line6 for attending the issues many have had. Notably, I could run the Variax HD software easily which meant I did actually run it. That loaded instantly and is good to have that tool available again. Yes I know it worked with the dongle thingy, but to me that process was lame enough that I never bothered to hook it up except twice. Nice. Overall, my JTV59 and Pod HD500 FEEL like a cohesive unit now after having felt more like a mishmash. Can a few relatively simple things like this make that kind of a difference? Absolutely. I look forward to diving in deeply in the coming weeks and getting to create some signature sounds I have loved half a lifetime like a Gretch Country Gent with a Fender Twin or a Gibson Firebird through a jumped plexi. Awesome.

Nice playing my friend. From where I sit, the firmware you're running won't matter. -
How Can I Record A Dry Signal From Pod Hd Desktop Via Usb?
smrybacki replied to JohanSmith's topic in POD HD
Well fabulous. Except I gave you the straight up answer in post 3. No sugar coating, no cajoling and no bull. I can read and had no problem understanding people's intent here. It's good you are a professional audio engineer I guess, but your people skills are so miniscule, an electron tunneling microscope would have trouble locating them. Frankly at this point, I wouldn't walk across the street to lollipop on you if you were on fire. -
Holy crap! For a minute there, I thought I was at work in 1983!

I have seen and experienced one simple fact in my own musical journey: Choice is great to a point, but after that point choices paralyze my creativity because I spend far too much time obsessing with parameters and whatnot and far too little time actually playing and being truly creative. YMMV, of course but for me this is true to the point that my next phone will NOT be a smart phone because I don't need to be doing 754 things (badly) at once in life when I could do one thing very well and then move to the next.

Well at least I'm clued in now :)

How Can I Record A Dry Signal From Pod Hd Desktop Via Usb?
smrybacki replied to JohanSmith's topic in POD HD
Alright now I'm kinda pissed. Nobody was double speaking in this thread. They simply told you what was possible with this gear. Period. You claim to be an audio engineer and yet you come here to ask a question an engineer should have known the answer to. And then you insult the people trying to help you by calling it double talk. Great. Here's a thought; read the manual and understand the tools you have. And don't give people crap for trying to give you alternative paths to your stated goal. I myself answered your actual question in post number 2,and brazzy gave you a way to record both wet and at least a pseudo dry signal via a work around patch that silverhead created and shared. A simple thank you would have sufficed. -
How Can I Record A Dry Signal From Pod Hd Desktop Via Usb?
smrybacki replied to JohanSmith's topic in POD HD
Then "your thing" requires a different mechanism to record with than a POD HD Bean. If the POD your only audio interface, then you are kind of effed as they say because it simply does not do unprocessed signal without using it's SPDIF output. So if you absolutely need to record dry signal via USB, then you need an interface that does that via USB which the POD does not. Sorry. -

I doubt you will get the exact same thing using any of these methods described here as a TRUE dry signal. That doesn't mean you won't make do just fine. try Silverhead's patch he provides a link to and see.
