Anyone using HD500 with EV ZLX12P and/or Stagesource L2M? And has anyone made a direct comparison? I would be interested in pro's and con's and what people think is best. Thanks in advance.

Weird Overtones On Jtv 59 On Low E
edstar1960 replied to stumblinman's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
There have been reports of weird overtones for the 69's mostly and some for the 59's. Certainly plenty on the old forum, but recently there have been a couple on this forum for the JTV59 and one very recently specifically about the low E. All guitars are prone to resonance of some sort but most of the time it just adds to the guitar's natural sound but sometimes the inherent resonance can be detrimental. The JTVs are especially prone when using alternative tunings because the actual strings are still in standard but you are playing in the altered tuning, so the actual notes played on guitar may set off sympathetic resonance, where if the guitar had been physically retuned the problem would not occur. JTV59's also have a tendency to resonate around the open A and D strings and fretted notes and I think that is down to the bridge design. I have provided a list of all the things I have seen others suggest as solutions to remove unwanted resonance and weird artifacts, hopefully some or all will help. Good technique helps as well physically stopping unwanted vibrations. The piezos are very sensitive and pick up much more than normal mags would and that translates to weird effects in the digital models. If you don't have these issues then that is good news, certainly makes life a lot easier and the JTV becomes a real joy to own then. :) -
Hard Shell Guitar Case For A Jtv-59?

You are welcome! I also have a JTV59 in Tobacco Sunburst - nice looking guitar! Like your pics - your one looks like it has an excellent finish too! :) -
Weird Overtones On Jtv 59 On Low E
edstar1960 replied to stumblinman's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Try these things: 1) wrap something around the strings between the nut and the machine heads to ensure there is no sympathetic vibration there 2) use a thin strip of electrical insulation tape behind the piezo saddles and lining the grooves in which the string tails sit 3) ensure the flat part of the string tail is at the bottom in the bridge groove 4) use workbench to lower the string volume of the low E to make it less sensitive 5) ensure no part of your hand is resting on the bridge when playing 6) check to see whether the piezo saddle moves when you play the string -
Thank you for sharing. I must say I am very disappointed with that response. It was not present at 1.9 and it is present at 2.0. When I was testing out scenarios where the problem occurred, I tried muting the strings and still got a pop, not as loud but it was still there. The vague reference to whether or not it will be fixed is probably due to the take over, and that they have probably suspended all decisions on product support and direction until Yamaha take over completed. :(

Demo available from ANDERTONS with confirmation that it does include Pod X3 sounds, if anyone interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caj-z5pPZo8

1) Popping noise does not occur on JTV fw1.9 - so I am currently on that 2) This behaviour has resorted back to how it operated before - and I did nothing in between - so that is very weird! Also, I was not the only person to experience this behaviour, several others also reported it, but they have all discovered it has reverted to how it operated before. Weird! I wonder what triggers it?

Hd 500 Output Selectors And Different Problem With New Firmware Update
edstar1960 replied to drbilldc's topic in POD HD
After you upgraded the firmware on the HD500, did you do the GLOBAL PARAMETERs reset and then re-calibrate your expression pedal? It's easy enough to forget to do those two things, but they are essential to ensure the firmware works as expected. If you did follow those steps, then it is worth trying to re-install the latest firmware, reset GLOBAL and re-calibrate at least one more time (if not more) to ensure you are not suffering from a corrupted flash update. -
Start with a new patch. Ensure GUITAR IN switch on top of HD500 is set to NORMAL and NOT set to PAD. Set input1 to guitar and input2 to same. Choose an amp model and cab and mic and tweak to taste. If you think you are not getting the signal level you want from the guitar then try boosting it with a compressor or an EQ or Vintage Pre amp or even a Tube Screamer with drive set low and output set high. See if that gets you near what you want - there are plenty of choices but you should be able to find one that boosts the input signal level to where you want it. You should also try the above using input 1 guitar and input 2 variax which will effectively decrease your input signal by 6db but you can then boost it using one of the suggest fx from above. See which you prefer, sometimes lowering the input guitar signal generates better (more realistic) responses from the model blocks. Listen and pick whichever your ears prefer. Hope that helps.

Playing Softly
edstar1960 replied to nikoniablue's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I have tried playing softly and I can only manage it at home for a short period - I soon go into my normal playing mode which is not overly heavy but is more heavy handed then Sean Halley and Paul Hindmarsh. Also - as soon as I get into a band situation - either rehearsal or live - I revert back to my normal playing - force of habit but also because the rest of the band won't let me be loud enough to be able to play gently - furthermore - playing the strings gently when you are trying to cover a "go for it" rock song just does not feel right. :) I agree with Rewolf48 that it is worth adjusting string volume so you can play with your normal style. I did try that after I first went to v2.0 and models sounded better. But I have since rolled back to v1.9 and not yet had the chance to go back in and rebalance string volumes in Workbench. -
Have you tried connecting to Workbench HD and seeing what the GLOBAL STRING volumes are set at? They should all be 0db but when I installed v2.0, when I checked in Workbench HD, I had different values for each string, all lower than 0db. If the GLOBAL STRING Volumes are all at 0db, then check to see what the individual string volumes are for each model - from memory, I think these default to 100% - so if any are set lower then you may wish to boost them. If your GLOBAL STRING volume is at 0db and your model string volumes are at 100% - then the only thing you can do is boost the output for each model using the settings provided in Workbench HD for the model - you can boost individual pick up output or the overall volume of the model. You will probably find you need to tweak each of your favourite models to your preferred tastes. I am sure I saw a thread where someone posted a link to a file containing a WB bundle with all the v2.0 models with their volumes all levelled out, but I can't find it at the moment. If you really don't want to be bothered with all that, then try rolling back to v1.9 and see if you prefer the model volume levels in that. Hope that helps!

1) No - not me at any rate, and nobody that I am aware of. 2) I have an open support ticket and Line 6 have said they will try to recreate the problem but ticket has not been updated in about 5 days (probably due to NAMM etc) - hope they get back to it soon 3)The popping noise happens with any patch that forces a JTV model change - it can be louder or softer - depending on patches you are swapping between, it is particularly prominent if reverb/delay fx are on with trails on. It does not appear to be model/amp specific. You can get it when no amp is being used in a patch, eg: when swapping to an acoustic sound. This problem disappears if on fw 1.9. NB: I did reinstall fw2.0 several times and this problem was always there, rolling back to fw1.9 removes the issue, so I am staying on that until it is fixed. PS: from the first gen Variax though to the JTV, manually changing the model bank to the ACOUSTIC bank will result in a loud popping sound, this is a well known and accepted condition, however, forcing model bank and model changes from the HD500 up to fw1.9 was silent, but with fw2.0 it makes the same type of pop as the well known ACOUSTIC bank pop for every and any model change when it is requested from HD500.

The only thing that eliminated the popping noise was rolling the fw of my JTV59 rom 2.0 back to v1.9. Popping noise cured! I don't understand why that would be, but it has certainly gone away. I have a ticket open with Line 6 support, and they have said they will try to recreate the problem. I have uploaded some of my patches that I experienced the problem with, just in case it is also related to the combination of fx/amps/variax model saved in the patch in conjunction with fw 2.0. I have been waiting a response for 4 or 5 days now - so I guess they are busy with NAMM and stuff .... so hope they come back to my ticket soon. I have also cross referenced the other reports of the problem on the forum for Line 6 to review and to demonstrate it is not an isolated incident unique to myself.

Regarding the popping noise. It only happens when using the VDI to connect JTV to HD500, that is also the only connection method where you can utilise the HD500 to force model changes on the JTV which is precisely when the problem arises. It also only appears when using JTV fw2.0. I do not get the problem on JTV fw1.9. Others have reported the same problem on fw2.0, and others have reported they have not had the issue. So whether it is something lying dormant that only some of us have stumbled upon, or it is something specific with our particular JTVs, or something to do with our specific setup, is yet to be determined. I am sure you will let us know if you encounter the problem or if you are fortunate and don't hit it. I hope your JTV59 is a perfect model and that you don't have any issues with it and that you get many enjoyable hours playing it through your HD500 and DT25. When these things work they are AMAZING !! As demonstrated by the awesome Sean Halley and Paul Hindmarsh videos to name but two of many talented people producing awesome music with these tools!

I have noticed that effect on some models and on some strings, but I am currently at fw1.9 after flashing back and forth a few times for a variety of reasons, and at the moment I have not noticed it much, if at all, but I have been concentrating on programming sounds on my HD500 and not concentrating on the models on my JTV59, so that sound could still be there, but just not as pronounced. Before, I particularly noticed it on models where I had both neck and bridge pickups active, such as SEMI pos 3. It was annoying but I just lived with it. I also have issues with the A and D due to resonance - I think the JTV59 bridge is particularly sensitive to those notes and I have to work hard to mute strings otherwise I get sympathetic ringing on open strings or fretted notes if it's D or A. Did you try lowering the volume of the strings in Workbench? I have tried that before and it did improve things - I don't remember it being completely eliminated - but certainly helped. So it is worth trying that. At the moment though, it's not bothering me much at all, which may be due to the numerous reflashes or because I am concentrating on other aspects.

You could use midi to sync them together.
