AMPLIFi isn't meant for any particular type of player, and the only "professional musician" vs. "occasional player" distinction would be whether it's their fifth amp or first and only amp. Obviously, AMPLIFi wasn't designed to be Metallica's backline on their world tour, but that doesn't mean it doesn't perfectly belong on their private plane, tour bus, yacht, living room, vacation home's living room, and their kids' condo. AMPLIFi isn't about who uses it—it's about where and how it's used. Personally, my POD HD Pro doesn't belong in my living room. My AMPLIFi 150 does, and it gets way more use that way.

Or use the accelerometer to measure your strumming speed and send MIDI clock to Mobile POD.

Since there's a spate of wishlists, here's mine.

You mean it switches channels, engages the reverb... that sort of thing? -
Why can't EQ be dB and Hz? (beating a dead horse)
Digital_Igloo replied to brue58ski's topic in POD HD
Thanks, Phil. It's five, but an exception can be made early on if more than five are required (say, for amps and cabs). Adding more parameters after the fact (or changing parameter value indicators) is, given POD HD's architecture, much more difficult. Again, nothing's impossible, but like every tech-based company, we're constantly attempting to balance difficulty, necessity, cost of doing business, schedule, critical bug fixes, public perception, etc. IdeaScale goes a long way in helping us prioritize features for both existing and future products. -
Stumblinman wins this thread.

Here's our latest product. Evidently, we've taken some liberties with branding.

Brand New Line 6 HW500 (HW stands for "Head Warmer"):
-
It deals with how the DSP and MCU communicate, and although nothing's impossible, the amount of architecture rewriting (and subsequent testing) would preclude a lot of other cool stuff.

Yes, products from AMPLIFi forward will have EQ parameters in dB and Hz. And include power switches. Unfortunately, POD cannot display values in Hz.

Can't talk about what we're working on, but it must be stressed that yes, AMPLIFi and POD HD are indeed two different lines, developed separately, for two different sections of the market. That said, POD HD isn't going away anytime soon—she's got plenty of life left in her. Challenge accepted! :D

Hi Guys, How many of you use the XLR mic input on your POD HD, HD500, HD500X, HD Pro X, etc.? In what capacity? Do you record with it? Use the vocoder? Mic up an acoustic guitar? Process guitar and vocals separately? If you don't use the mic input at all, we'd like to know that too. Thanks!

I've mentioned this before, but... Line 6 is wholly owned by Yamaha, which is a publicly traded company. As such, legally, we aren't allowed talk about certain things. Smaller, privately held companies can do whatever they want, and larger companies hire specialized PR drones to deal with forum interaction. The point of my presence in this thread was to stress, emphatically, that we haven't "dumped POD HD users over AMPLIFi". And secondly, to point out that AMPLIFi isn't a toy.

Whoa—hold on. A product's EOL status is completely independent of whether it receives future firmware updates. It's not fair to poke and goad for an answer, and then take said answer out of context and spread misinformation. Remember—I'm accountable for my comments on forums, and would like to keep communicating with you guys. EOL means new units of a particular SKU are no longer being manufactured. Of course HD500 and HD Pro are EOLed, because they were replaced with HD500X and HD Pro X! Implying that "EOL" means we've stopped supporting a product altogether is disingenuous. Now I have to go scrub a dozen other forums to make sure this hasn't spread.

AMPLIFi's engine is based on an enhanced, optimized version of POD Farm 2.5, because it gives us the widest variety of models that are the easiest and most predictable to tweak—not just for us, but for the tens of thousands of users publishing their tones. By comparison, POD HD features what's considered a more advanced engine, but its depth, detail, and nuance (e.g. obsessing over bias excursion and cabinet resonance level) don't necessarily make it the best candidate for "grab a guitar from your couch and jam with Deftones between "Game of Thrones" and "Silicon Valley". Does that make sense? Sometimes I want to obsess over bias excursion and cabinet resonance level. Sometimes I just want to play "Minerva" while my girlfriend's grabbing popcorn.

I don't think (and have never implied) AMPLIFi is an immensely better tonesculpting machine than, say POD HD500X. It's a completely different type of guitar product, designed to be used in a different manner, in a different environment. Its workflow is unique, and some have a hard time wrapping their head around it. If it were up to me, you'd be playing through whatever Line 6 product(s) meet your needs. :)

I'm fairly certain POD HD300, HD400, HD500, and HD Pro have been EOLed. I can't (legally) talk about the future of POD HD500X, HD Pro X, and HD Bean, but all are currently shipping products. And if anyone wants to treat me like a god, I love Thai food, movies, traveling, and back rubs. :D

We're writing in a thread titled "Don't dump POD HD users over AMPLIFi". My comments are wholly appropriate, especially the ones where I state, for the benefit of POD HD users: "We aren't." But this conversation is nothing new. For years, every time Apple released a new iMac or MacBook Air, a handful of high end video guys would freak out over the lack of a new Mac Pro. As if Apple could maintain its success by making nothing but Mac Pros.

Obviously, if developing a hardware + software solution for Android was anywhere close to as simple, non-fragmented, secure, and predictable as developing for iOS, everyone would be doing it. Google's taken a lot of steps in the right direction lately, so things aren't as bleak as they once were.
-
None of this is surprising, really. In a perfect world, Line 6 would be in a position to release products from all lines simultaneously, because it'd make our intentions a lot clearer for everyone. We had many conversations about how people may think AMPLIFi was somehow replacing POD, and of course this thread and others confirm it. I can't tell the forum what we're working on, but I can tell them when they're barking up the wrong tree. One more time: POD HD500X and POD HD Pro X continue to be Line 6's flagship modelers. There are guitarists who rarely play just for the enjoyment of it—if it's not their über-expensive, meticulously dialed-in session or gigging rig, it's not worth their effort. That makes me sad, because I've been there: Fight LA traffic to the studio, unlock the doors, turn on the amps, set up the mics, boot the DAW, wait for Logic to scan all EXS24 samples, create a new session, aaaand... inspiration's gone. That's not fun—that's work! Even if your rig's 30 feet away in a spare bedroom, the time between an idea popping into your head and turning on your rig, dialing in an appropriate tone, and playing the first chord is too long. And be honest—for even the most inspired musicians, it's waaaaay easier to just check Facebook, watch Netflix, play a video game, or visit the Line 6 Community forums. If an awesome-sounding, loud Bluetooth speaker that doubles as a stereo guitar amp that makes you play way more guitar isn't the Line 6 product you're interested in, then wait. No company can do everything at once.

Amp Wish List For The Next Update (whenever That Is)
Digital_Igloo replied to RipperShred's topic in POD HD
I check IdeaScale probably two or three times a day. And on Fridays, our group gets email updates with all new IdeaScale submissions. We couldn't avoid it even if we wanted to. The advantage of IdeaScale over forums is that we can actually collect everyone's ideas as meaningful data—e.g. XX% of submitters want a 5150 model. Browsing hundreds of threads on a dozen forums and trying to make sense of it all—not so much. -
Our product roadmap includes plenty of professional-level products. And they will include many features culled from IdeaScale (and this very forum). Can't speak for others at Line 6, but I've played more guitar in the past nine months with AMPLIFi 150 in my living room than the previous five years. My playing chops have gotten better. My tonesculpting chops have gotten immen... [While typing this very post, Tool's "Stinkfist" started playing. I grabbed my Jaguar, and the tone for "Stinkfist" had already downloaded and was ready to go. The next song wasn't as inspiring, so I put down the guitar and went back to...] ...sely better. Let's be honest here. Guitar music is struggling. There are fewer guitarists now than ever. You can count the number of guitar-based songs on the Billboard Top 40 on one hand. And guitarists are Line 6's lifeblood. With AMPLIFi, we sought... [Sorry. Failure's "The Nurse Who Loved Me"] ...to inspire all guitarists, from beginners in their bedrooms all the way to rock stars on their tour busses—to play more. We want more guitarists. We want new guitarists. Instead of randomly checking Facebook or Reddit, we want people to randomly pick up a guitar and play along with their favorite songs with the tones of their favorite songs. Instead of driving to a practice space, or heading down to a dank basement studio, we want AMPLIFi to be where you are. If that's your living room, we want it there. If that's your dorm room, we want it there. If that's your office, we want it there. If it was safe to play guitar while stuck in traffic, we'd make one powered from your car's lighter! From someone with access to millions of dollars of amps, pedals, and high-end outboard and effects, I still play through AMPLIFi most often. Twice, in fact, while writing this.

To be honest, all IdeaScale submissions are in review; that is, we review every single one of them (yes, every one). Not sure what an official "In Review" means, but perhaps one of the other Line 6 guys forwarded it to others to gain more exposure?

Suggestion to L6 - How about a "NO MIC" option
Digital_Igloo replied to billlorentzen's topic in POD HD
There are two primary methods of capturing mic data: 1. Put up a bunch of mics in front of the cabinet and capture them all 2. Put a single ultra-transparent mic (Earthworks) in front of the cabinet; then apply mic model compensation curves to the result Number 1 is a lot more work, likely a bit more accurate, and IIRC, how POD HD was done. Number 2 is a faster to implement and probably a bit more consistent. The binaural head mic is a really interesting idea, although they'd really only apply to stereo cabs, which are twice the DSP load. That and unless you're listening on headphones, there'd be a kind of "amp in a room in an amp in a room" effect. Still, it's worth a conversation with our lead sound designer. $100 says they've already tried something like that—might've seen a Neumann KU-100 floating around the studios. As for "subtracting" an element from a sample, it's a lot easier if you used method number 2 above and therefore, knew exactly what mic model curve was added. With a bit of work, you can come close to zeroing the mic out. But there'd be no point if a test mic was used to begin with; just choose that. /not a sound designer, not a DSP engineer -
Gotcha. What we need are better MIDI master devices! ;) Duly noted; added to our internal IdeaScale backlog. Thanks.
