Make Your Variax Sound 100% Better
Rocco_Crocco replied to katiekerry's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Understood. It appeared on mine that the string was not making contact with the piezo casing as well. See the picture. I used the "A" string casing as the focal point of the pic because my "E" saddle has already been filed. The "E" casing looked just about the same, with the string coming a little closer to the casing but still appearing not to touch. Anyway, despite this I filed anyway. No harm, no foul, right? The act of filing almost completely removed the pinging. YMMV, but if it were me I would file it anyway. My $0.02. -
While I'm glad it sort of worked, it sounds like you're still having problems. The sounds you should be getting should be spot on. The Lester should sound like a LP, the T-Model like a Tele, and so on. Trust your ears. If something doesn't sound right, its the guitar. I would reflash again, from a different computer if possible. I don't know the technical reasons why a different computer would help, but I do know that my work laptop does not get along with my Line 6 gear as well as my personal laptop. Good luck.

The Tele sounds so good. It's definitely my favorite model on my Variax.

Make Your Variax Sound 100% Better
Rocco_Crocco replied to katiekerry's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I laid the guitar flat on my workbench, then filed slowly while holding the file like I would hold a pen, almost perpendicular to the ground. I filed up and down only moving about an inch in each direction. An inch down, then an inch up, etc. So only about an inch of the file was used. I had the re-string the low e a few times before I took enough material off the casing to get rid of the ping. -

I used a five inch long triangular file. Each side of the triangle was about 1/4". I'm not sure where you live, but if there is a Home Depot nearby, that's where I bought the set. This is what I got from Home Depot. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Nicholson-5-1-2-in-Assorted-Hobby-Craft-Mini-File-Set-6-Piece-42030L/203336567 I did mine several days ago and it still sounds great. -
Is anyone really happy with there Jtv?
Rocco_Crocco replied to capdoogie's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
That sucks that you haven't had a good experience. I love my 59. The first one I got from Sweetwater had problems. The replacement they sent was awesome. Is it perfect? Nope. But the acoustic tones and the alternate tunings alone make it worth the price of admission for me. -

Ok, so I went to Home Depot and bought a cheapo set of small files, went back home and got to work on filing the piezo casing a la katiekerry's post. I ended up widening both the front and back slots and it made a definite improvement. Pinging is there but it seems about 90% reduced. The whole process took maybe 15-20 minutes. I made sure to WIDEN, not go deeper. Thanks for posting this solution, katie. -

This cause makes sense and explains why the remedies I have used only work temporarily. The downward pressure from the string eventually pushes down through whatever material I have used (velcro, felt, tape) and the string reseats itself into that groove. I can't find my reading glasses right this second, so it it hard for me to see on my saddle, but it appears me string does not sit on the pickup-side casing groove, but rather rides over it, not touching. It definitely is sitting in the groove on the other side. I'll still try to widen the groove and see what happens, after I find my glasses B). -
String height adjustment...
Rocco_Crocco replied to podman01's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Each saddle is not height adjustable. You cad raise/lower the bass and treble side by adjusting the two large bridge screws (make sure you loosen the strings befor doing this. Only go a 1/4 turn, retune and check for buzz. Repeat until you get it where you want). If your 59 is like mine, the low e nut slot was cut a little too low. I had my repair guy fix it. -
Humbucker cover for JTV-69?
Rocco_Crocco replied to sulkbooth's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Measure the distance between the two outermost polepieces, center to center. Convert to millimeters for the first link below. The second link uses inches. http://www.philadelphialuthiertools.com/search.php?search_query=humbucker+covers or http://www.stewmac.com/Pickups_and_Electronics/Pickup_Kits_and_Parts/Humbucker/Humbucking_Pickup_Covers.html -
Be carefull... some of the worble and artifacts may be caused by you also hearing the standard pitch of the guitar's acoustic sound blending with the altered signal. The solution? Turn up yer volume.
