  1. Ka5par has it right! This stuff should not be difficult, just follow his advice. Decent instrument > Helix > Good monitors / amp + speakers / headphones > Nice sound. What can go wrong? Well, lots apparently! As in your previous thread about this stuff, we discovered that your home cinema speaker system was not up to the job of accurately monitoring from a DAW. We also discovered that even though you have a copy of Reaper on you PC, you were totally unfamiliar with how it works. IIRC, the best advice then was to follow all the video tutorials for using Reaper, available from their website. That advice still holds true in this instance. Once you have a "Nice sound", as Ka5par suggests, you can progress with learning the basics of audio engineering and then probably be able to create a reasonable, professional recorded sound. You have to study this stuff, it doesn't just happen. As stated in the previous thread - if you bought a Helicopter, you really should have some flying lessons.
  2. Peter, I am more than reasonably sure, in fact I am certain, that in this instance, you are perfectly correct. I didn't quite think that bit through, or rather, I didn't express my basic idea properly. It certainly would not solve the "problem" (that does not exist) if the signal was being returned back into the Helix. As we are aware, during a patch change Helix would have to ditch a whole bunch of variable parameters from all blocks in the preset before being able to load a fresh set of variables for the next one. There would be a temporary break in the signal flow and therefore – no trails. Although, if our studio based Producer/Technician got adventurous, and was to take the return feed from the external processor (eg: Eventide H9, Big Sky, rack mount Lexicon etc.) and inserted it into a spare channel on his mixing desk? Well, maybe then? That was just a thought. Anyhow - Only using Snapshots will. Sadly, it's something the OP cannot, or will, not comprehend.
  3. Ah! The ultimate error has become the ultimate quest - the search for the Holy Grail. So, you've "been looking for this feature for years"? Well you had better get used to it, because it just isn't going to happen anytime soon! It has previously been mentioned on this forum, that the Digitech GSP1101 could handle "Spillover", but it was by no means perfect, or everyone would be using them. It rather looks as if you will not be able "to invest in further guitar products before this has been handled" as I don't know of any current digital modeller that can do what you expect. To deal with the "Spillover" issue Fractal came up with "Scenes" and Line 6 gave us "Snapshots". Hey, guess what? Correct! Something that actually works... Furthermore, as a "technician and producer", I am surprised that you don't seem to have even considered the "send and return" options available on Helix. Problem solved! Simply patch in your delay and reverb of choice. That's one reason why they are there. Plus, as a "Studio Tech", just imagine the digital shenanigans you could have hooking up to a whole battery of outboard pro rack mounted and software VST delay lines and 'verbs available to you. Fun unlimited!
  4. If you had bothered to check, you would find the facility to turn "Trails" on or off, as an option when editing any of the delays and reverbs available in Helix. This had been a much griped about issue before the introduction of "Snapshots", which seemed to make users very happy! Maybe "the ultimate error" is simply the oversight of 5thvision?😜
  5. Ditto - although I did have some really weird issues early on with constant active sensing messages between Helix and my ancient Roland controller keyboard. Bought an Arturia Keylab 61 as a controller and Helix performed faultlessly between keyboard and Logic ever since!
  6. I would like it to have the ability to clean my toilet and pay my taxes!
  7. I'm a Mac pilot (so I may well be wrong), but I think I've read about some people logging onto their PC with Admin privileges which has enabled them to successfully perform the Firmware updates. Could be worth giving a try. Good luck.
  8. I thought that when I first read the post, but I remain in a constant state of flux!
  9. My comment about the appeal, above, was posted as stunned and shocked surprise that a guy of Allan's magnitude in the guitar fraternity, could have left his family in such a position as this. I hope no one took it out of context. As previously noted, it is a thing that I never expected to see and the link is there for anyone who wishes to contribute, so thank you for that Brad, it will surely help. Not everyone is rich and famous. I knew the guy and his fellow band mates when in our late teens and he was a great player even then. When Allan went for the audition with Tempest, another good friend was also up for the gig but when he got to the stage door and heard what was being played he thought - "damn, that's Holdsworth! Best go to the pub". About an hour later Allan appeared in the same bar and saw Pete with his guitar case. Allan insisted that Pete had the best chance and should go for the audition. Needless to say the pair remained to have more beer and the outcome was Mr Holdsworth was offered the job - the rest is history! Happy days.
  10. Well this is something I never thought I would see! Crowd funding a funeral? https://www.gofundme.com/allanholdsworthmemorial That really is weird!
  11. Oh, please God, Nooooooooooo! Don't say they were playing "Smoke on the Water" at the time!
  12. THIS! True. Helix is supposed to be 100-240v self sensing, so you can run it anywhere with that supply range.
  13. The electrical supply in Ireland is 230v 50hz. The plugs and sockets are different from the USA involving a three-pronged formation, the same as those used in the United Kingdom, so it should have been O.K. Maybe due to an accidental Guinness spillage?
  14. Jorgen,, Yes, I do get your point, but you also did say you had misinterpreted the label "AUX" Suggestion. Helix has 4 separate channels available, so set one to the mono "AUX" in as if it was a guitar signal, then pass it straight to the output with no other processing involved! It's not as elegant or convenient as some of the other options posted in this thread, but worth a shot. As for your previously deleted comment, consider my history lesson a freebie, gratis, no charge! Have fun with your Helix.
  15. Ye gods, Just spotted this on teamrock.com. I used to drink with Allan and the various members of Zany Woodruff, Museum and others every Friday night in the late 1960s. Cleckheaton was a wild place back then. Will be much missed. http://www.zanywoodruff.com/related-bands/the-museum-1967/ The real Allan Holdsworth website has crashed!
  16. Ha ha ha. You will have to watch out for that Greasy Kid's Stuff. You don't want to tarnish that nice brassware!
  17. The AUX input is mono - it's designed for the input of a guitar or bass with active pickups, although you could use it for a MP3 player.I don't understand what extra bunch of gear you think you would need for playback? If you check Chad Boston's informative video above, he shows how to do what you want with a Y splitter cable and a small playback device. Sort of things that you could have in your pockets, it doesn't need a truck and a team of roadies to implement. If you went the iPad route you would maybe need the camera connection kit and a USB cable - not such a big deal. I also suggest that you read post #31, above, from Rewolf48 who pointed out that both Fractal and Kemper kit don't have 1/8" inputs available for hooking up your MP3 player. I really fail to see why this should appear so difficult to work with. Oh, yeah. Regarding the comment you made earlier and deleted, you mentioned that 1/8" Jacks had been used for centuries. Maybe you meant decades, they were introduced in the 1950s for connecting earpieces on transistor radios. Quarter inch phono plugs were used in the original manual telephone exchanges around 1878, making it the oldest electrical connector standard still in use,
  18. Yay! Fixed! Big cheer for the speedy repair crew!
  19. Ah, the amp in the room question. This is a topic that crops up quite a lot. The thing to bear in mind is Helix is designed to sound as if you are listening to a miked up amp and cab fed into in the control room monitors of a studio. So, rather than re-type the whole thing, I suggest that you have a read at the posts in this thread: http://line6.com/support/topic/26752-pointers-for-newbie-thinking-of-moving-from-traditional-combos/?do=findComment&comment=207494 Hope it helps with your question.
  20. No one intended to come across as snarky, but your original post did seem to have been made by someone who had not even bothered to read the manual. I would expect the usual response, on any user forum anywhere on the internet, to be along the lines of RTFM! I usually try to help with queries about Helix stuff, or point people to the place where they can find an answer. In the case of your original post, it appeared that the most basic guide would be the solution required. You decided that didn't like my reply, that's fine, I won't lose any sleep over it! Have fun with your Helix.
  21. O.K. That's cleared that up - flame off! You are correct in thinking this is the place discussing all things Helix, but the place for suggesting things that you feel require adding or improvement is on "Ideascale". People will vote it up if they agree with you - simple solution. I realise that opinions are like belly buttons, everybody has one, but for a fan of Helix you also appear to find a lot to criticise. Lots of negativity. As for me - I'm very happy with my Helix and how it all works. With regard to the issue of low resolution Editor software, Did you not pause to think that maybe it has been developed like that because of the various platforms it has to function on? It's the "lowest common denominator" - not every Helix owner will be using a Retina display. Have a nice day.
  22. Ouch! You really should be careful who you choose to insult with a cheap jibe! "This pixelish look takes away some seriousness and professionalism – maybe you think this is spoiled whinery." Yes it is! Maybe you should have looked at it using an old Atrari 1040ST or Commodore 64 if you want to see chunky pixels. Let me advise you, young man, that since finishing art college in 1969, for my day job I have worked as a graphic design professional. Since the introduction of the Apple Mac in 1984 I have been a freelance consultant for digital design/reprographics and photographer, a specialist Photoshop image retoucher/trainer, supplying my skills to a blue chip client base throughout the U.K. and Europe. Did someone die and leave you an opinion about everything? It appears that many of your posts are very critical of some of the features in Helix hardware and software. I really cannot comprehend why you seem to find so many issues with a product that spent so many years in development. If you are such a "hot" concept person, try pitching your ideas direct to the marketing department at Line 6 and see if they run with it. Sorry if some forum users are not happy with my response, but I think I am starting to smell a troll, check his posts. Or maybe it's just a puppy with a new toy - far too excited Did you ever read this: "To change the default resolution, select "System Preferences" under the Apple menu and then click the "Displays" icon. These four scaled resolutions are listed ranging from "Larger Text" to "More Space." On the 15-Inch models, the supported scaled resolutions are 1920x1200, 1680x1050, 1280x800, and 1024x640."
  23. Ditto http://line6.com/data/6/0a06439c975d5787c3e351aa0/application/pdf/Helix%202.0%20Owners%20Manual%20-%20Rev%20D%20-%20English%20.pdf you beat me to it silverhead. Another one learning to fly without basic instruction.
  24. Yes, "Open in Low Resolution" is the default option for the app, but I really cannot comprehend what the problem is with that. I have the Helix Editor running on my iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch and it looks perfectly fine to me.
