  1. Experiment with all tools at your disposal. There are no rules.
  2. +1 @gunpointmetal. The ability to tweak tone after recording your dry guitar track—while mixing—is awesome. You can combine plug-in effects with Helix effects as you like. Bonus: using the Helix as an "external hardware effects processor" opens up lots of additional fun possibilities, even beyond guitars.
  3. God Bless Lowell George! Try using a Dumble amp, and run two Red Squeeze (Dynacomp) compressors in front of it, in series. Set the first compressor for high sustain (and boost volume accordingly) and the second for low sustain (and adjust volume as needed). Play with the settings until it sounds right to you. You could also try two Studio compressors (LA2A). He also used some pretty heavy strings on his Strat for good sustain. Here's a great interview: http://www.lynx.bc.ca/~jc/lowell.html
  4. ...see if heat affects it (like after its been on for some time). Or vibration (give it some light taps on the sides).
  5. @willjrock -- I've been using the Helix for recording electric guitar and bass into Logic Pro X, and it works well. Bottom line is that Helix gives you extreme flexibility between itself and your DAW. Here's what I often do (in general): Tracking: record a mono dry track (USB 7) while monitoring and recording a stereo wet "scratch" track (USB 1/2). Mixing: tweak Helix guitar tone to sit in the mix. I usually get it sounding as good in the rough mix as possible. Depending on the prominence of the track, I may or may not use Helix reverbs (as I usually prefer to use my Phoenix plugin reverb). I set tempo on the Helix to the track if I'm using time-based Helix FX such as delay. If I need additional EQ or compression on the track when polishing the mix, I do that in the DAW. Bass vs Guitar: I usually blend the mono dry bass "DI" track, adding plug-in effects (eg Distressor, etc) with a duplicate mono track processed in the Helix like a bass amp (amp + IR). For guitar I use a stereo wet track, which may or may not be mixed as mono during the final mix. Keyboard, Vocals, Etc: the Helix FX work nicely on non-guitar tracks, and are open to experimentation. MIDI control: I control Helix presets, footswitches and snapshots on the fly using a MIDI control track in Logic, sent to the Helix to make changes while the song is recording any wet tracks.
  6. ...sounds like a wonky ribbon cable connection from board to LCD.
  7. Amen to the psychopharmacology. Brain chemistry is a very delicate balance. Work closely with your doc if he's a good one. And go at your own pace. I battled situational depression for awhile a few years back, and can't speak highly enough for a healthy diet, plenty of water, focusing on getting good sleep, and exercise. And lots of guitar playing.
  8. Ah, thanks. For my purpose, I would like Helix to be the Slave (for studio/DAW use). But when clock support comes, it will hopefully work in either mode.
  9. I think the MIDI support is pretty darned good. But Tap Tempo via MIDI CC is buggy, and needs fixing. MIDI clock support would be icing on the cake, at some point in time. (Get it?)
  10. Also of note, the Helix is supposed to currently receive a MIDI CC command to set tempo via a "Tap Tempo" feature. This would allow you to send a fixed tempo to the Helix and have it set its tempo accordingly. However, the feature isn't working correctly, and Line 6 has mentioned they will fix it in the future. After that bug is fixed and MIDI clock support is added, we should have some good stuff available for MIDI synching.
  11. @seattleguitarist --- I'm curious about why you need MIDI clock — do you want to use the Helix (for example) as a master to control external MIDI devices, or as a slave to synch time-based Helix effects to external MIDI devices or DAW tracks? Or something else?
  12. Use the Softstep forum ... its very helpful for this sort of thing.
  13. Thanks for the website, its some kind of wonderful. The Tutorials are essential.
  14. By messy, I mainly mean time-consuming. I've got songs that change tempo 10 or more times during a song, and use a MIDI control track to control Helix footswitches, presets, and snapshots. It would be a simple matter to change tempos using the CC64 commands in an event list, but it takes a lot more time to create the proper snapshots. I also have to save a separate preset with all the snapshots, dedicated to the particular song. Messy. I am really happy with and appreciative of the range of MIDI support in the Helix (e.g. program changes, switch control, snapshots), but I do wish they would fix the Tap Tempo bug!
  15. This bug doesn't appear to have been squashed with 2.10.0. So, no tempo changes via MIDI CC, and no support for MIDI clock yet. DANG! The only workaround I've found is to setup snapshots for DAW tempo changes, and use CCs for snapshot changes, but that is messy and glitchy.
  16. Nice!! Great tone and riffing ... if only my fingers were in as good shape! I love the TE70, but the neck is a bit wide for my hands.
  17. bump somebody answer this because i can't sleep
  18. Yes, I for sure see the need for Helix sending out midi beat clock to outboard effects (Helix as master); as well as the need for Helix receiving external midi beat clock (Helix as slave).
  19. Actually, there are at least 35 time-based effects in Helix (delays rotaries, flanges, phasors, choruses, tremelos, ring mod, etc) that would benefit from MIDI sync. You'd be surprised! I rarely use a steady/click tempo in my DAW recordings, so simply setting a tempo for an effect isn't ideal.
  20. ...really sorry to hear fremen. Please reach out to friends and folks to get all the support you can. We'll be here for more of your awesome presets when you're feeling better.
  21. I was ready to pull the trigger on the Soundtoys 5 plug-in pack until I experimented using the Helix as a hardware insert for my DAW. I'm now using the Helix, in addition to its intended purpose as a guitar stompbox modeler thing, as a processor for various DAW tracks. It does a darned good job for keyboards, vocals, etc, but really needs MIDI sync to make it even useful for the task. Perhaps someday when Line 6 finishes the essential list of guitar-related features, they could dabble into supporting a full list of Sountoys'like "plug-ins". I'd much rather take my DSP processing offline to my Helix than do it all with CPU-intensive plugins.
