Vote For A Lefty James Tyler Variax

Recommended Posts

If you know are a left hander or you know a left hander, then why not vote for a left handed JTV?
http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Left-handed-JTV/506338-23508

UPDATE:
While it is may be possible to rewire a right handed JTV, add a new button for the guitar strap, etc - It would void the warranty, and would leave you with a guitar that isn't exactly ergonomic. Hendrix shined with his upside-down Strat, but alas we aren't all Hendrix!
To anyone who is left handed by nature, but has forced themselves to play the "right" way up - Well done. Vote anyway?

You are aware that Hendrix played a right-handed Strat flipped over, aren't you?

Either way, it would work with a regular guitar perhaps, but not a Variax. The saddles are all arranged specifically. Maybe if you rewired all the piezos in reverse order.

Hendrix notably did not restring the guitar - the high-E was on the top.  I get where you're going with wanting left-handed Variax models but all I'm saying is that Hendrix is not a good example.

But, if you want a traditional lefty Varaix I would think you could swap transducer assignments without too much trouble.

So all the pictures I've seen of Hendrix he's bending his low E and the A string? Quite unlikely  :D

He did restring his right-handed Strat.

I'll concede the point.  I don't know where I got it in my head that he strung it right-handed!

But, doesn't change the fact that you can swap transducer wiring (or the transducers themselves) if you wanted to flip over a JTV-69.

And void the warranty. Great idea.

Look, if you don't think left handers deserve to be catered for, then don't comment in this thread. A lot of people seem to think we are purposely being difficult. What's the big deal? Every guitar company I know of has left handed models - even Line 6 used to. Line 6 have the "USA Custom Shop", but 3 years in, still haven't managed to create a single left handed JTV model.

come on now...

he was just suggesting a path forward...

just because it wasn't a post in absolute agreement with you doesn't make it a bad post....

not to mention you could always save a ton of cash get a used one... that would have no warranty to void...

again not ideal... but an innocent path forward... so calm down a bit

OK, thank you right handers. We've had the obligatory "you could modify the guitar" comment now. Why did none of us think of that???

Hey TheRealZap, I'm sorry that you think I'm being a bully. I admit I am hurt by right handers and even left-handers-who-play-right-handed, who feel it necessary to add their two cents worth of apathy, every time I mention this opportunity to vote for for a left handed JTV. It feels to me like right handers are bullying us with condescending and unsympathetic comments.

I like you, and appreciate your comments and the help you give people on these forums. Can you please explain why this thread is not welcome here, and advise which would be more appropriate - a new forum or a new support group?

I don't want to stop right handers from commenting. I want everybody to vote for a left handed JTV. I think it is a matter of equality that anyone can get behind. If you know a left handed guitarist, or you are a left handed guitarist - then why not vote for it?

Distracting from this message with suggestions that we should modify an instrument designed for right handers, or that we should have forced ourselves to play right handed when we started, will get my down vote on this thread. It won't be viewed as helpful.

It's a bit like telling your gay brother that he should "just marry a woman dressed as a man", or "just learn to be sexually attracted to women", instead of voting for marriage equality in your state. It's not going to effect you negatively to vote for equality, and it's going to make a significant proportion of the population a lot happier.

Not that I don't agree with you, but I'll be devil's advocate for a second. Lefties make up 10% of the community. Unfortunately, that means the other 90%, while they are serviced to some degree by the current JTVs, would prefer Line 6 spend their time on something other than a lefty guitar, which is no use to us. For me, I hate the current JTVs, apart from the passable JTV59. My vote would be for a PRS style JTV. So the question for Line 6 is then are more people going to buy a righty PRS JTV (or something else), or a lefty JTV. Of those, what % is taking away from other sales.

So equality is not as straight forward as lefty vs righty. You can turn a JTV upside down and not be happy, and I can buy a JTV69 (or something else), and be equally unhappy.

I Vote for one.  Boooooooo for every company that doesn't make all guitars in a left handed model!  I'm looking to buy one now and can never get the guitars i want left handed!  I've had to put up with my arm hitting the tone or volume pot my whole life!

Wait, I've got an idea.  How about companies only make left handed guitars and then all you right handed lot can modify them instead!

Please make more left handed models!  This is discrimination!

I don't see it as in progress, but i do recall a public reply from someone internal to L6 that said they nearly had one model ready to go for lefties... want to say a 59.... if i recall that led to complaints that some wanted a 69 lefty... etc...

you can't please everyone, i guess... i think this was a ways back on the old forums... don't think i'm imagining it... but i can't cite any specifics... so ... take it as a rumour.

I Vote for one.  Boooooooo for every car company that doesn't makes cost-effective compact cars. all guitars in a left handed model!  I'm looking to buy one a car now and can never get the guitars i want left handed  an affordable car that I can fit into! I am over six feet tall and I've had to put up with my arm head hitting the tone or volume pot roof of every affordable car my whole life!

Wait, I've got an idea.  How about car companies only make left handed guitars full size cars and then all you right handed lot under-6-footers can modify them instead pay the extra cost too!

Please make more left handed models stop making compact cars!  This is discrimination!

The above was edited (bold text) to reflect the feelings of tall people. Additional versions of this story are invited from people with big feet wanting a broad selection of shoe styles, left-handed golfers, broad-shouldered people wanting a variety of good-fitting men's suits, heavy set women who would like to buy lululemon wear, and the many other sets of people whose physical characteristics place them in a relative minority.

I'm with you all the way on this.  Let's have a left-hander please.  Lefties make up around 10% of guitar players, yet the guitar shops I visit probably have about 2% of their stock in l/h models.  I realise the old "from a business point of view" etc, but I just don't get it.  In these days of recession ANY profit is not to be sneezed at.  And guess what?  If I could get my hands on a lefty Variax, then I'd probably be looking at a DT25, coupled with an HD500X.  Ooh look, Line 6's profit just got even better.  Without a Variax I'd probably buy neither because if I couldn't unlock all of the features then I'd be looking at the competitions offerings instead which are plentiful.  Which is a shame 'cos we'd ALL like chance of the "Dream Rig"

bilbo,

Actually, from a business point of view, not all profit is good or at least, good enough. There's an opportunity cost. You have limited resources. Let's say I have $X in resources to invest. And say, I can make $Y on a lefty, but it costs the $X to put the systems in place. If those same $X can make 2 * $Y on a different model, you're going to make the different model, despite the fact that you could have made money on the lefty. You can make more money on the other one in this example.

That being said, the lefty request was changed to "in review" on ideascale on Nov 7th, whatever that means.

Have to disagree with that comparison.

It's outrageous that L6 has completely blown off 10% of their potential customers by completely ignoring lefties.  I'd buy a left-handed Variax in a second.  Guess my money is not good enough.

Where is the 10% number coming from? It's estimated that 7 - 10% of the total population is left-handed. I don't know how that translates to guitarists, though. It seems like the percentage of guitarists who play left-handed would be much lower than that, though. There are plenty of left-handed people who play right-handed. I write left-handed, for example, but I've always played guitar right-handed. Actually trying to play a left-handed guitar was nothing I ever considered.

I'm not arguing against a left-handed Variax. I just doubt that 10% number listed above.

I don't know one way or the other...way before my time, but these photos would seem to argue that he did restring his guitars. Looks like low E on top to me...Now Eric Gales, on the other hand does indeed play lefty AND upside down.  Seen that for myself.

Yeah, I dunno about that either...go to any GC or similar Big Box music store (whichever ones still exist). There will be 500+ righty guitars, and maybe half-dozen lefties, if that.  Nobody caters to the lefty...which admittedly sucks for those players. But if there really was a 10% market share, you'd see more on the racks, but you don't. When I used to teach, any square one beginner who wanted to play lefty, I would try and steer them away from it.  If you can't play at all anyway, what difference does it make?...might as well start out righty.  At least you'll be able to find a guitar...

That's an old post.  As many folks pointed out, Hendrix did indeed restring his guitar.  I have no idea where I picked up the impression it was otherwise.
