Should I make the move from “real gear to a Helix?
ricstudioc replied to Sebaileyus's topic in Helix
Ah darn it - now I'm gonna have to go rebuy all the stuff I accumlated over 45 years of playing/touring/studio, and let go of when I got Helix. And here I thought that I had great sounds, ridiculous portabilty, extreme flexibility all in one little package. Who knew...? :) :) :) -
Should I make the move from “real gear to a Helix?
ricstudioc replied to Sebaileyus's topic in Helix
Pretty much sums it up - saved me a bunch o'typing. Simply put, the best damn money I've ever spent in the realm of guitar stuff. And with certain L6 comments over on TGP it looks like the HX reverbs should be out sometime in the next 60 days, so even the Strymon users may be able to put another bit of gear up for sale... -
Never bothered with the original editor - now I've got my laptop on a music stand next to my rig, and it's become the only was I edit. Yeah, some little issues - but overall a vast improvement on the original.

Guitar Player Mag Jan 2018 - Helix Editor Multibanding Pg 17
ricstudioc replied to spikey's topic in Helix
Don't know about the article, but going to the GP site gave me one holiday gift - the original lineup of the Dixie Dregs is touring!! I got mine... btw - can't the split points (Path A to B, etc) be frequency dependant? -
Don't be sorry - when yer right, yer right. My bad

1. Which pedals should I keep? Had to go there, huh? Not gonna be any opinions on this one... :) So - in my opinion: - TC Electronic Polytune 2 Noir I would - it's a nice little pedal and Helix doesn't have it's equivalent. - Boss NS-2 Noise Surpressor Nah - plenty of gates in Helix, hell you can stack'em as needed - TC Electronic MojoMojo Overdrive - TC Electronic Dark Matter Distortion Don't know these well enough to judge on their merits - but again, Helix has a slew of very well modeled OD's/Dist's. And keep in mind that by virtue of controller assigns & snapshots you can often take a single amp from clean to effin' insane just by assignment switching. (Can do the same with the drives/od's as well) - Tone City Comp Engine Compressor Not unless this does a trick of some sort, plenty of quality comp choices in Helix - Joyo JF-316 Future Chorus Ironman Mini Again - plenty of mod choices in Helix, so unless this does some amazing thing.... - Tone City Tape Machine Delay - Boss GE-7 7 Band Graphic Equalizer Both of these food groups are more than generously covered in Helix Really the only two reasons I can think of to go outboard with any of the Helixes are 1) a specific pedal does something that Helix doesn't, or does it better. Examples - I use an EHX POG2 for poly octaving, and several of their "9" boxes for organ/synth/string sounds, and a lot of folks are hanging onto their Strymon reverbs. And 2) to save processing power, which realistically is rarely an issue. Also the LT only has the one loop, so your flexibility is a bit constrained. Welcome to it! Yer gonna love this thing.... B)

Welcome to it - you DO have a bit of a curve ahead of you. You'll get it sorted, have some patience... As noted above - if you're going to use an actual power amp & speaker cab you won't need (or probably want) to have the Helix cabs as part of a patch. Easily done, just choose "Amp Only" or even "Preamp" versions of the various models - which is better is a matter of taste, try both and see. But plenty of folks doing it that way, you won't be alone.

Yah - my acoustic patches are comp>eq>delay/verb and that's about it. Nylon or steel string, I get good results. Start simple and consistent, go from there.

Now Phil, I've told you a hundred million billion times - don't exaggerate! But yeah, he DID want to minimize floor space, didn't he? Naw, it'll be fine - it just sends standard MIDI data which is pretty bread and butter once you know what you're doing. The chip mods have more to do with customizing setups to specific bits o'gear, basically establishing "templates" for certain gadgets out there. Helix reads standard MIDI PC's and CC's. But Phil's right - the FCB IS a big girl....

Thanks to both you guys - way to dig down, and interesting results. appreciate the effort...

Simple - the "other side" hasn't made a blanket statement of asserted fact. You made a declarative - "most everybody". That would imply some sort of survey, or study that has been performed. For all I know such an analysis exists, and you are privy to it - my request was simply that you share that information. You have an opinion, and are entitled to that - but that's not how you couched your statement. So yes - I'm REALLY interested in the factual basis for your statement. "Who (I'm) trying to side up to..."? Huh? S'pose I better check my PayPal account - must be tons of donations coming in from that "other side". Good - holidays are coming up. And I'm not remotely "slick" - just analytical and rational - and very clear in my speech. When I can prove something as fact, I do so - otherwise I acknowledge my bias.

Source of your statistics, please?

The Alto's - can't go wrong.

Said "routine" apparently being invented just the other night.

Agreed - I'm not slamming on L6. At best it's a minor annoyance, I would have a real problem if I had to KEEP the DAW online, but I can live with the momentary use of the wifi dongle when I start up. Guess I'm a bit surprised that they didn't seem to realize many DAW users prefer to have no connection, and hence no active adaptor. As noted a number of folks have weighed in on this, it is a little pita - but I'm not expecting a change anytime soon, if at all. Hey - I've got freaking Helix in my DAW! The Bear is Dancing....
-
Ok, had this same problem - My Windows DAW is never online other than briefly for authos and such, I use a WiFi dongle to hit my home network. The evening I installed Native I plugged in, shot up and got the autho - Native fired right up, yippee! Got home the next day, tried to open and got the exact same message as the OP. Scratched my head a bit - what was different from last night? AHA! Plugged in the Wifi dongle, and Native opened right up. Some discussion over at TGP brought to light that Native needs to see an active NIC, part of the autho process. Every time I go to invoke I have to plug in my dongle, open Native - then I can unplug and go about my business. Personally I - and others - have expressed our dislike for this behavior, but I assume it's part of the "deep code" and am not holding my breath.

FR: A tiny HELIX pedal like the AmplifireBox for open-mic and small gigs
ricstudioc replied to d0stenning's topic in Helix
Over rated - I keep putting mine in the same pocket with my keys, it's scratched the paint all to hell.... -
Another HD500 convert - absolutely night and day in ease of dialing in sounds, and much more capability in every way - DSP, routings, integration of external fx, control capabilities. It's a quantum jump forward - I kinda/sorta tolerated the HD, I freakin' LOVE the Helix. Do it... Do it... Do it... Do it...
-
I'd imagine a Coral Sitar - fairly common in the period.
-
Yup - as I mention it's a bit tight out of the box, but mine's loosened up a tad with use. I'm sure the L6 backpack is great, but this works quite well for...what...half the price.
-
I use a Novation backpack, made for their 25key controllers - works great. Main compartment started out a bit snug but eased up over some use, enough accessory space for a small sideboard with 2 expression pedals and cables. Ran about $75 as I recall. ...Ok, $70 https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ImpulseBag25

JTV59 failure in hot humid conditions
ricstudioc replied to Mooseboy08's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I keep the batteries in a ziplock - generally I used freezer packs, tho on a couple occasions (in a pinch) I did use ice. Basically I'm trying to lower the starting point temp, buy as much stage time as possible. Nice thing with the JTV's is they'll default to the mags if the battery shuts down, so you can make it thru the tune - albeit without the acoustic/12 string/whatever you're using - and then just pop a backup in. But that's happened like once since using the cooler. Hey, it gets freakin' HOT down here in the desert. BTW - I'm just a wireless geek, otherwise I'd simply use the VDI cable. Hate cables....
