    Tube amps Gone?

After getting kemper 2 years ago I sold all my amps because I couldn't tell the difference between the profiles I made and the mic'd signal from my amps, which is all I ever hear anyway because I'm on IEMs. Then I discovered mbritt and got a nice tone upgrade. That's right, my tone with kemper was better than the mic'd up tone from my own tube amps. Then I started getting tired of pedals so I got a Helix. Same thing.
  2. Recently I've been using the Litigator for everything except heavy stuff. Really versatile and a TS in front is great for leads.
  3. If they actually ran the modelers direct like they're supposed to be used, instead of mic'ing up the FRFR (WTF?) then the differences would be much more noticeable.
  4. Parametric EQ has a high cut and low cut. There is also a simple high cut and low cut eq block, as well as a global EQ you can turn on. high cut range: 1k to 20k no Q on the high cut but there is Q on the low med and high sections yes you can control literally any parameter with expression pedals for a smooth sweep or stomps if you just need to toggle between two values instantly. In the case of the expression pedal you can also easily set the minimum and maximum values for the range of the sweep.
  5. I have never had anyone react to my digital stuff like that. Every single time they are blown away, even if they are pretty serious gear snobs. Are you sure your tones are good? It would be a good idea to bring your own monitor. A DBR10 is only $400 and the upgraded DXR12 is only a little more. Either way, I'd add to this list and shoot it back to him. The guy is clueless. 6. Yes, all of that is possible, very simple with Helix.
  7. You shouldn't have any problems using the AUX input for a low impedance signal from a wireless unit.

  10. I run all of my effects into the front of two amps in the helix as well. I'm just using the controls on the split block itself to hard pan, same on the merge block. I recorded a few reverbs yesterday with this preset and they sound stereo to me, particularly when I switch to the boss RV6 (0:28) the stereo image is extra obvious. Am I doing something wrong? I don't really understand the difference between what I'm doing and what you recommended. I'd really appreciate if you could take a look at my split/merge block settings. 11. "amp in the room" is really just "guitar cab in the room" so if you wanted to use a modeler and get the amp in the room thing you'd need to disable the modeler's cab modeling, and run it into a neutral power amp and guitar cab of your choice.
  12. The problem you're going to face is that you're used to hearing the cabinet in the room with you. When you use an FRFR, monitors, or headphones, you're taking the signal that would come from a mic on a cab, and making it louder. Not the same sound or feel as a cab sitting behind you blowing on your legs.
  13. Disable the cab modeling and run it into a power amp and cab. Only way to get the cab in the room feeling is with a cab. Everything else is just making a mic'd signal loud.
  14. It's around 1ms. https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/line6-helix.1586637/page-1783#post-23854420
  15. You shouldn't really have to tweak to get usable sounds. The amps sound like mic'd up amps.
  16. I dial them in loud with a PA speaker. My go-to eq settings are: cab block low cut 100hz high cut 5k global: a couple db down at 4k (the "harsh zone") low cut 80hz high cut 10k

    Lovin' It

    same here, it's awesome
  18. This is correct, but once you get your vocal/backing track/basic guitar routing setup done, you can just duplicate that preset and change the guitar settings as needed. Helix has four independent stereo paths. You can set up the footswitches to control blocks on any of the paths. If you have an overdrive on the path you've set up for guitar, it's not going to affect the vocal or backing tracks paths.
  19. What an awesome video! ACDC with a strat on the grammys. Amazing.
  20. The most important issue to figure out is: once you get a helix, how will you monitor yourself? A lot of people use an FRFR due to the flexibility it offers over a traditional guitar amp's fx loop return, but there's no wrong way to do it. I would start by disabling the power amp and cab sim blocks on your helix and just running a preamp block into your amp's fx loop return, and mic'ing it like usual. Once you're comfortable with that, you could start splitting the signal in the helix and sending a modeled power amp and cab direct to FOH while still using your amp's power amp and cab for stage volume. The next step would be to ditch the amp and cab altogether and switch to an FRFR, which would just be making the modeled mic'd signal from the Helix louder.
  21. I read this whole thread and the OP didn't even say what speakers he was running through. Bottom line, helix sounds like the same amp+cab+mic setup monitored through the same speakers. There's a reason the helix challenge is 50/50 right/wrong.
  22. XT is a joke compared to the Helix. To answer the question in the title, Helix is as responsive and fun as a good valve amp that is mic'd up and monitored through the same speakers you're using with the Helix. Factory AC30 preset:
  23. Hey guys. Big helix fan. Had it for almost 6 months now and sold almost all my other gear. One thing I haven't quite nailed is how I used to use my compressor pedal: High compression, low mix, high attack time, high release time. This gave me great sustain but didn't squash my attack. Any suggestions on compressor settings to help achieve this? Thanks!
  24. Doesn't seem worth it in a live setting. The main advantages of modeling for me are: 1) quick set up 2) reliability 3) price 4) flexible amp tones 5) lightweight rig Using a tube amp head in 4CM with the Helix eliminates all of those. Besides, I can't tell the difference between mic'd up tube amps and the helix models when they're monitored the same way. I think the main reason people think tubes are magic is because they're used to playing amps through loud cabs, not listening to amps mic'd up through monitors/FRFR/headphones.
