  1. Supposedly that is what he does to new rosewood boards lol! EVH hates having his guitars cleaned and used to play strings until they break and then changes only one not the whole set.Robben Ford changes the entire set of strings on his guitar after tracking a solo in the studio. I am an HD500 user and may or may not update the firmware.I am very happy with it the way it is but a global e.q. is tempting as are a few of the other amp models.I only play live cover gigs with it though. I do not record with it so I pretty much stay within the Marshall/Fender/Vox amp model areas of my HD500. For recording I use various tube amps/cabs and an M13 or individual pedals.
  2. Neal Schon of Journey rubs a stick of salami on the fretboards of his new guitars.
  3. I use my HD500 into various amps- effect returns of my Fender BDRI and HRDLXiii/ Marshall JCM8000 and sometimes an EHX 44 Magnum power amp into a 1x12 cab. I dont use the pre amp of my amps when I use it this way. I set up 4 preamps on the bottom row of switches and 4 pedals to turn on and off effects within the patch on the upper row of switches. Gives me stomp-box flexibility and also lets my amp sound like other amps when I need it. This works well for me as I don't like the extra time and cabling of the 4 cable method most of the time. I found over time that I dont need to have 8 effects to turn on and off available.4 stomps(compressors/ drives and delays ) are all I really need to toggle on and off. I have an M13 for stomp box type gigs I do.I velcro a compressor to it and use the 4 cable method when I use it utilizing the preamp section of whatever amp I am playing through. After a month or two of use you will find a good working method for tour HD500 and your tube amp. I am still very happy with mine and I play a huge variety of music with it in 5-6 bands. My Boss GT-10 has been put away so long now I am not even sure where it is lol! Good Luck and welcome to the forum lots of very cool and helpful people here!
  4. They also work very well into the effect return of any good tube amp. I use my HD500 pre only models/ patches into my JCM800 effect return and do the same thing with my Fender BDRI and HRDLXiii. Great results every time.So much easier to dial in non cab models using the L6 HD instead of my Boss GT10 which has been put away for so long I dont remember where the hell it is lol! Used the HD last night at a casino gig through a 44 Magnum power amp and a 1x12 cab. Sounded pretty darn good and was fun to play!
  5. Interesting thread.I am not a Van halen fan nor do I play or use Peavey 5150 amps.I do however use a real 1982 JCM800 so I know a little about heavier tube tones.Having covered a few VH tunes in my years of cover bands what I find most interesting about EVHs amp tone is that it is not that distorted. It is pretty clean compared to other Sabbath etc... tones.I am pretty sure that he gets his tone by playing really loud. Most of us cant do that in a club or typical venue.I can remember in my younger years goosing up my amps volume, not distortion to play VH tunes.I would bet that this Panama HD model would sound great through a tube power section into a 4x12 cab turned up real loud.Unfortunately most of us are forced to play at anemic volumes most of the time and guitar amps are made to be played loud. I know my old L6 Flextone 1st generation amp sounded way better when I turned it way up. just a few thoughts on this subject I hope you get it figured out
  6. My wife brought home one of those killer label makers and I just label everything with it.Change them once in a while if I need to.I don't think I want magnets on any music stuff except pickups.Looking forward to your pics!
  7. I think you can set that to go either way.Right to left or left to right.Download the manual and refer to it for many answers re: the M13. I refer to it often when using it as it is a little different from other Line 6 units.
  8. Download the manual into your computer hopefully a laptop and follow the instructions on each procedure. I have to refer to it a lot when using my M13. Its all in there. Good Luck!
  9. I have had zero noise problems doing the 4 cable method using my M13 with the following amps Egnater Tweaker Marshall JCM800 model 4010 Fender BDRI Fender HRDLXiii probably a couple of others I use all Mogami and Monster cables you cannot hope to use the M13 with such complicated routing unless you have very very good cables period. Its always a cable and the way I check them is this buy a new one expensive yes but worth every penny to a working pro player. as far as being ignored it may feel that way but no this is the best place for all things Line 6 a lot of these guys including myself are busy and only get on here every few weeks months I use a lot of other gear and dont discuss it much here I and everyone else here try to help all that we can. Good Luck with your playing! Although I dont use it much anymore I love my M13 and recorded an entire album with it Follys Pool- Out Of A Dream. In the studio the M13 is a huge time saver with great not good tones if you know what you are doing!
  10. Played 3 services at a 3,000 people per service church last week. Took my HD500 and a couple of strats and a Korg pedal tuner.Had to play a lot of specific parts from skanky funk to high gain leads to color things up. Playing through such a high volume high tech system requires good tone/ a well set up guitar and a good set of hands and ears. Basically a studio type of demands on an electric guitarist. The HD500 must have done well because none of the techs sqid anything to me the entire time but they were having a bit of trouble with the other electric player who used conventional amp head/pedals and an ISO cab setup. He had a cable short on his pedalboard with at least 12-15 pedals on it during Sunday mornings rehearsal. The techs were all over that lol! Kemper/GT100/POD/AXE etc... are made for these situations. I have my HD500 sounding so good I almost forget it is there.Yeah it was a pain and a process to get it happening but no more difficult to me than a lot of tube amps/ pedalboards and other stuff I have used. When I play my club gigs this weekend I will use a Tech 21 Fly Rig and aTweaker tube head/cab. Having used that little thing for the last 12 gigs or so I think Line 6 should at least look at making something that powerful and small with the POD modeling. The giant footprint of these PODs and foot-controllers dont work in tiny clubs especially if you have to add a Talk Box like I do. As far as Kemper and AXE pricing go anyone who takes something like that into a club situation because they cant get close enough with a POD/GT/Zoom for covers needs to look at some other elements of the equation.I can cover a huge amount of styles with a good guitar and that Fly Rig. I know my theory/extensions /voicings/voice leading and all the other things that are just as important when playing covers as having an exact sound some guy and a producer made 30 years ago in a studio that IMHO you cant get with an AXE/Kemper either. Maybe closer but I know most club musicians are still playing for 1970s wages like most guys where I live. I make a little more because I have a nice PA and sing well.Generally though I just use what will do the job and dont bring anything else these days. I work way harder on my technique and theory now instead of buying and tweaking more stuff.Yes a lot of it is in the hands. Hendrix did a lot with what he had and what he heard which is nothing compared to what we have today.
  11. I use Alto 10s and 12s. Love them and have had no problems.Sound much better to me than QSC powered speakers and yes they have many other uses! Good choice enjoy and grab another one used down the road.
  12. Hurghanicos guide turned my whole POD HD500 journey around.Read and implement all that he suggests and you will get real good tones out of your POD.
  13. Welcome! and yes I was just barbecued on The Gear Page a few minutes ago for suggesting to a new father he keep most of his tube amps and not buy an Axe FX lol! Lots of great people and resources here. I love and gig my HD500 regularly. Tonight into the effect return of an Egnater Tweaker head and cab. So many ways to use these HD units. Have Fun!
  14. Yes power amp in is the return of the effect loop. Put the the HD output into that and it will work very well! Power amp out is the "send". Good Luck with your playing!
  15. They changed the cinnamon rolls at Disneyland in Anaheim and my youngest son was very disappointed recently but we took a couple pics of him with the new cinnamon rolls and had a laugh and went on with our lives. I have written a few tunes in my time and recorded tons of commercials and made a couple of independently produced albums as well.I used no fewer than 7 electric guitars/two electric mandolins a Line 6 M13 that had a couple problems during the recording and several tube amps most of which worked well for the sessions. Never ever roll all your eggs into one basket with music. One guitar even the Variax cannot be relied upon to deliver everything you want especially recording.Something always screws up. Have three guitars and three amps and a bunch of effects ready to go at all times to insure composing recording success. I have learned all this the hard way.
  16. All wireless units will act strangely in certain environments. It does not matter what the price point is .I use the G50 and have had almost no problems however today I was using it in a large club with lots of lights/ wi fi laptops/DJ stuff etc....and it cut out once for about half a second. My only other suggestion is when you get another one throw the batteries it came with away. You dont know how long they have been in it and use brand new fresh batteries. My G50 has the best tone of any wireless I have ever used I can hear every fingernail scratch lol! A dropout once in a awhile is part of using a wireless. I hope your next one works for you !!! Good Luck!
  17. If you have money buy a speaker emulator by Palmer.Hughes and Kettners Red Box is okay too. A lot of players go on and on about these cab IRs etc...I used a cheap Behringer speaker simulator box for quite a while and it worked well.
  18. Run the pod output into the effect return of your amp. Grab a funk patch off of customtone or make one with the Fender Twin model and enable the wah.I like to play Stir It Up etc... with a little edge so I set the amp gain just a bit on the hot side. My approach is a bit different as I know most reggae guitar players play a pretty icepick clean Fender Twin type tone But I like a slight grit on mine. Listen to some reggae you like and isolate the guitar with your ears and get as close as you can but remember to be yourself when creating tones. When people come to see you play live they will enjoy your interpretation of reggae tones more than sounding like a record. Have Fun!!!
  19. After not using it much during my many holiday gigs last year I have started using my HD500/ Line 6 Wireless/ Fender BDRI or HRDLXiii rig live using the preamps of the HD500 into the effect return of my amps and the Fender Twins are Eric Johnson clean at volume. Great tones lead/ mid gain rhythm / jazzy / Marshall gainy/Boogie etc...I have had no trouble getting cleans from this unit. I dont bother with the 4 cable method I just run the mono out to my amps effect return and mic the amp with a Senheiser mic and it more than gets the job done. I own and use a Roland Cube 80 XL which is very similar to the JC120 tone wise and I dont miss it on the typical cover gig when playing my HD500. I also use the HD with various FRFR setups and it kills I just turn the DEP cab parameters almost off lol! and they work very well. That part took a while to figure out but man has it been worth it. Once again really digging my HD500. I played an afternoon cover gig with one of my trios today and it was so good I FORGOT I WAS USING IT!!!! Thats what I'm talkin' about!
  20. Yeah just use the best cables you can afford.I have used my M13 with all kinds of amps with no problems.Always great tones and great in the studio too!
  21. I dont have one of these amps but I have other EL84 powered amps and they run at full dissipation unlike EL34s or 6l6s which run safely at around 70 per cent dissipation.EL84s will die quickly and sound great in some circuits. In some like a Vox AC15 they will sound great for about an hour and a half . After that they sound kind of "hashy" and overheated to me.I would think Line 6 designers would have them running a little cooler than an AC15 does. I have an HD500 and would love to try one of these amps with it.
  22. The easiest way is to run it into the effect return of a tube amp.Combos are fine and build some simple patches with no cab modelling. Just preamps and effects.Absolutely kills through all my tube amps this way. Turns my Fender Hot Rode Deluxe into whatever I want!
  23. Great thread. Lots of interesting takes here. I use a Boss GT10/2 Roland GR55s/ Line 6 HD500/1982 Marshall JCM800/2 Fender tube amps/ powered FRFR speakers/ an Ipad with Jamup Pro and a bunch of other stuff for live gigging depending on what I want to do.The HD500 gets used a lot. I like it and dont get too flustered about updates because I have 6 tube amps to compare tones with and I use those amps to build patches on my digital units. Not long after I got my ipad/Jamup/ Blueboard live rig happening Apple issued its latest update(which I did not do on my phone or ipad I know better) and it crashed and basically obliterated almost all of Jamups users who did do the update. Is the ios stuff good enough to gig with?Yes. Do I want to take my $400 Ipad/ $100 interface into certain environments? No.I take my $269 used mint condition HD500 into those places and it kills through my Marshall or through my FRFR speakers. I am thinking some who yearn for updates and free new amps etc....are hoping the modelled amps they don't have yet will cure the itch for the real thing. It wont. If you could play my 32 year old JCM combo at volume for an hour you would know that is simply not going to happen. My Marshall has never been updated and is still a viable potent force to be reckoned with and I love marrying it with the HD500! My point is we live in and age in which we dont have to commit to anything because we are constantly getting updates . The Beatles made Sgt. Pepper on a 4 track recorder and it was and still is brilliant because they were forced to make a commitment to what they were tracking. No undo redo reprogramming waiting for an update etc.... If you are good you should be able to make music or any other art with what is around. That is how all the great records were made. Its funny I dont hear any of those records being made with all the choices we have now.I hear a lot of pointless crappy albums being made these days. Work with something for a while and you might get something good out of it.Or complain about not having something you dont really need to do serious creative work. The choice is up to each of us. Apple can keep their updates.I need my stuff to work. All of the above is only my opinion. Please continue this discussion.
  24. My HD 500 sounds great into my JCM800 combo/Fender BDRI/Fender HRDLX and my Alto 10 and 12 in. powered speakers.I love the options all my Line 6 gear gives me. I like reading these DT amp success stories as I am sure they are great amps!
  25. Although I did not for many years for the last 5 or So I have changed one string at a time on all my guitars. It works. When I have to clean a fretboard or level my frets I use a little home made jack keep to keep the trem lifted and do it as quickly as I can. Also all my Fenders expensive or cheap require a lot of neck and other adjustments. It's all part of boating son. Keep the guitars and play love enjoy and work on them. They are not keyboards. The adjusting and tweaking part of guitar ownership is what makes us different. It is what makes you sound different from every other electric guitar player even those who use the same amps and guitars. Good Luck!
