Yeah. Since this is the "waitin for firmware" thread, I thought it was a nice little discussion. I don't think anyone was overly nasty or anything.

Are you implying that the ONLY reason he has them up there is because he can? I'm guessing that no he doesn't have all of those amps JUST because he get's paid for it nor JUST because he doesn't have to carry it himself.. He may decide to lug them around on tour for those reasons and not try another solution but that's not WHY he does. The MAIN reason he has them is NOT JUST because someone's carrying them for him. That would be ridiculous. It's because he likes the different tones/sounds he get's out of them. His way of playing is, of course, the most important part, but it ain't the only part. The tone that he get's is a major part. When I first heard Mr Bonamassa (Live at Albert Hall, a must have DVD), it was his tone that originally got my attention. I mean I'm talking about the very first note he played, I really liked it. It is fairly unique to him. I mean why would he, and many other artists, even bother to use a different amp, let alone actually tour with more than one? We all know how much of a hassle that is, even if you don't have to carry them around yourself. It's not the most important thing but, again, I think it's a lot more important than a lot of people state. I'm assuming just about everyone, if not all, of the people on this forum has had the experience of having a really good tone inspire the way they play as well as experiencing a lousy tone sucking the creativity out of you. It's something that, for me, is an important part of my playing. Not the most important. But a lot more important than is implied by this pre update dialog. And if it's actually, truly not important at all to anyone else, that's great for whoever you are. I enjoy playing a lot more with a great tone and that makes it a fairly large component of what people hear from me.

One thing I do to show my friends how cool everything that's available to guitar players is, (showing of my Helix among other things) is to play along to a backing track. Pink Floyd would be one of the bands backing tracks I use. On many occasions they're not impressed. They say "awww, you're just playing along with the song. It's hiding all of your mistakes. I'm just hearing the blend of the recording with you." Then I stop playing. Then they stop hearing any guitar, that's when they're impressed. Not to toot my own horn or anything about my playing or to imply I can play exactly like Mr. Gilmour. I'm just pointing out that though, yeah, I can't microtonally match a certain player (who can?), people can and do feel like they are experiencing another player. I'm sure there's an ear to two on this forum that would be able to tell it's me, but I've found many "regular" people cannot. It's an experience that's changed my perspective on the "no, you can't sound like another artist" discussion.

BUT...if I'm playing Comfortably Numb, it's so iconic that yes, I do want to sound and play just like him. That would be why I shoot for that in that situation. I have my own style and sounds but I don't want to use those when I play a Pink Floyd song.

He hasn't heard me. ;)

I've heard this kind of thing a lot and I get it but why are there so many different kinds of amps? Why are there so many different boutique amps. Why does Joe Bonamassa have several amps on stage. Because different amps sound different. Sure if Malcom played through a Gibson EH-185 he would have sounded like himself BUT he would not have sounded the same as when he played through his own gear. And why did he move away from his original amps? Could it be because he found an amp that...wait for it...sounded different and dare I say it, better than his original amp? If the "It's not about the amp" statement were true, that wouldn't have happened. And if the amp doesn't make a difference, why are there so many amp modelers? Why do people even bother getting an amp modeler? Since it isn't about the amp, why don't people spend the money they would be saving on the amp models and spend that money on an effects only unit like the HX Effects unit or something from TC Electronics. After all, it's not about the amp. Or is it? Why did Eddie use the Variac? I know why he started to use one but he kept using it because he liked the sound. Using the "it's not about the amp" theory he could have used any amp with no Variac. It's a great theory and there is something to it, but how an amp sounds is why people choose different amps. It's not totally about the amp. Of course. But the amp and the guitar are your foundation. The notes you choose and technique unique to you, are the beautiful building you build upon it. At the very least, it's more about the amp than that statement implies.

Have you tried the Double Take effect? I myself don't know how well it works. But it may help although, the method you came up with works VERY well.

Here's what I know is NOT happening. It's all ready to go and fully functional but Line 6 is holding it back because it's so fun to watch their customers squirm. I know this is what's NOT happening.

Broken cable lid. Now sizzing sound.

DeOxit D5 https://www.amazon.com/Hosa-D5S-6-DeoxIT-Contact-Cleaner/dp/B00006LVEU?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-ffab-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00006LVEU That's the stuff. You might want to try just blowing some compressed air in it first. But if I'm reading this right, I don't think that would be the issue if I understand you correctly. -
Yep. Theoretically, if you had an oven that could be remotely controlled by a computer via bluetooth and the program that did that used keyboard shortcuts, you could start your oven with the Helix. Why would you want to? How am I supposed to know? ;)

Trouble getting Helix Native to work, what am I missing?
brue58ski replied to mattwolfson's topic in Helix
So it does have input (INPUT) and output (MAIN) meters. Do those both register audio? -
That's a good question I kind of addressed in a previous post. Don't know. I noticed in his previous temkplate example he didn't use buttons 1, 6, 7 or 12. Perhaps one of those buttons will get you in and out of that particular mode like button 6 will get into the stomp box mode.
-
To me personally the cool thing is ya keep your hands on the guitar. You don't have to press a button and then quickly get your hands in position. It sounds like a small thing but it actually helps out a lot while recording. Another possibility is playing to backing tracks. You can skip to the song you want, start and stop it, all while keeping your hands on the guitar. It's not just for recording.
-
I use that approach. I just pretend I've just received whatever amp I'm checking out and do what I've done before with a new amp. That took generally about a day.
-
Well, that's pretty much everything I would use. I may use that "template" for my DAW (Sonar X3). I'm assuming this is accesed via the MODE button.
-
There was a post from DI (Digital Igloo) that was something to the effect of "there are only 6 blocks available..........for now" That's not an exact quote and as I recall, he did imply that it wasn't a given it was going to happen. But it sounds like they are working on it and want to implement it.
-
I was kind of wondering about that. I'm guessing with all of the available shortcuts in programs, it is difficult to come up with a template that anyone would use right out of the "box". I do not envy your guys task.

I am aware of only one XLR input. It's for the mic.
-
Along with some others.
-
I am so relieved you can navigate around just fine. It's not a matter of ease. It's a matter of. none of your solutions are applicable to my situation at all in any way whatsoever. No matter how "easy" they are.
-
Well one thing I'm sure of, is this " with both vocals and guitar sending signal to one instance of reverb, the return from that reverb would have both guitar and vocals, which makes sense, just like on a traditional Send Bus... ". I'll muck around at home later on sometime this week if I have time . Sounds like a challenge. One thing you may need to know is other than the output or using FX sends and returns (with short cable connecting the send to the return), there's no way to just click and drag a path connecting anywhere in path 1 to path 2.
-
You're confused? If I want to see what amp (or delay or reverb or whatever) I used and it's NOT in anyway assigned to a switch with a scribble strip, your method doesn't work for me. Let alone the fact that I set my footswitches up for the top row to be presets and the bottom row to be snapshots. AND I want to stand there and not have to bend over and move the cursor over to see what the amp delay reverb etc. is. I just want to be able to quickly look down and see what I've got. I'm not sure why that was confusing. If it still is, you're on your own. I honestly don't think there's enough screen real estate there to implement my desire without using abbreviations, which could wind up even more confusing.
-
Speaking of blocks, it would help me if the blocks told me what model they were, not just a symbol for the category. Not sure if the screen real estate is conducive to that but it would be nice.

A B Box for a Variax
brue58ski replied to jbebich's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I'm assuming he's looking for a VDI cable A/B box. -
I've always wondered why no company has put the ability to rename and save the amps/effects/cabs etc to what I want them to be. I'm assuming it's some kind of legal issue but not sure what.
