  1. No, because there's a limit (64, I believe) to the total number of parameters that can be assigned to snapshots in a given patch... and you wouldn't need an overly complicated patch before you accumulate more than 64 adjustable parameters.
  2. A better question is not is it possible, but rather is it worth the time, money, and aggravation to make it happen? Plus, it pays acknowledge the fact that trying to shove a square peg into a round hole pretty much always ends the same way. Buy what you need and sell what you don't... that's the path of least resistance.
  3. You're more likely to get an answer asking for the winning MegaMillions numbers for a week from next Tuesday.
  4. Not me. I enjoy things like tuning stability, guitars that don't sound like crap, and avoiding unnecessary tetanus shots because I've sliced myself open ancient, rusty strings....
  5. I don't want to rain on your parade, but all you'll find is a mystery... and that's if the specimen you happen to get has the problem in the first place. It's a common, years old problem that likely has numerous contributing factors, particularly the tone you're using (higher gain makes it worse), playing technique, pick attack, etc... which would help explain why some guys have the problem and some don't. Whatever the cause(s), it's far from universal...and if it could be solved with a soldering iron and/or rubbing alcohol, that would have been discovered long ago. The simple truth is that it's imperfect (and now decade old) technology... for all the things it does well, it's still got a long way to go.
  6. If your guitar "plinks", swap the wires for the low E and A strings... you'll find that the "plink" is now on the A string. Can't be a physical problem with the low E saddle if you can relocate the unpleasant sound at will. Any Variax can suffer from this problem. It has nothing to do with the mag pickups... it's purely a modeling issue. As you can see by the advanced age of this thread, this isn't a new phenomenon. Line 6 themselves weighed in early on, and have since publically announced that they wouldn't be spending any more time or resources trying to figure out what makes some guitars suffer from this, but not others.... in other words you're wasting your time trying to figure it out. The folks who built the damn thing don't even know.
  7. I can't even count how many PC's and laptops I've gone through in the last 20 years.... and honestly, I don't think I could come up with even one other thing that was "cutting edge technology" in 2001 that I'm still using today, music related or otherwise. Today's technological marvel is tomorrow's abacus. I figure the only reason there hasn't been another Variax generation (or two) already is lack of sufficient demand.
  8. There's either enough available DSP to run a given amp model, effect, etc, or there isn't. Nothing will ever sound any different or "better" based on how much unused DSP remains.
  9. Well you can't really assume that... the previous owner could just as easily have used a different VDI cable, or he was plugging into a traditional amp and using the 1/4" output instead. In fact, if you're gonna use the VDI output, you pretty much have to get an additional cable. The one that comes with the guitar is flimsy, and intended to be used only for firmware updates and/or accessing Workbench... it's not intended to be plugged directly into a POD (or other Variax- compatible device), as only one end has the plastic housing. For actual day to day use, especially on stage, you need a more robust VDI cable with housings on both ends. Plus I can't imagine why someone would bother buying a Variax to use nothing but the mag pickups... kinda defeats the purpose of owning one.
  10. Never heard of that particular problem, and I've had both L6 cables and bestronics... the latter being considerably more robust and durable. Plus you can choose whatever length you want. Turnaround time in a COVID world is anybody's guess... been using the same one for years, but I'm sure they can give you some sort of ETA.
  11. Just happened to be poking around on the Sweetwater site... they're giving away a G10S with the purchase of a Helix LT, and the Relay itself just saw a $50 price drop. Hmmm... lol
  12. I never got the originally advertised 8 hours... even when it was brand new. Those numbers are always a fantasy anyway, just like mileage estimates from auto manufacturers... you'll only get the upper limit of the estimate if you only drive downhill with a constant 40mph tail wind, but I digress... I consistently got from 6 to 6.5 hours before the "update". Not anymore...
  13. The forecast for the evening of 3/22/2039: Dark, with increasing light towards morning...;)
  14. I wouldn't complain either... and I'd probably do it, because I know that I can without f*cking it up...but there are guys out there who are afraid to change their own strings. I just deal in probabilities. And this scenario seems about as likely as me waking up tomorrow to find that I've sprouted wings. For it to work, they'd have to make the form factor of the guts essentially identical to a decade old product... possibly several. I don't even know if the boards in the various JTV's and Standard are all the same thing or not... if not, then it'd be a huge undertaking to tool up and produce multiple variations of hardware to retrofit all the old fiddles out there. Anything is possible I suppose, but I just can't see that being cost effective for the handful that they'd sell. Hell, the entire guitar doesn't exactly fly off the shelves, and the DIY-ers of the world are an even rarer breed than Variax owners. Just my 2 cents... time will tell.

  16. "If you nail together two things that have never been nailed together before, some schmuck will buy it from you" - George Carlin...;)
  17. Not to put too fine a point on it, but with no line out, where would the noise go? You'd have a $600, pretty blue paper weight...;) Gotta be a mistake...
  18. Oh, I did indeed read something different... quite different, actually. In fact, below is the sum total of what I read, and precisely what I quoted. I cut nothing, I edited nothing, I added nothing: Everything that now follows, in a post twice it's original length, acknowledging the fact the a recall won't be forthcoming, etc, was all clearly added after the fact... and even those few sentences above have since been heavily edited, rearranged, and expounded upon... but I'm the spin doctor? Right, you got me. Let's not pretend that it's my reading comprehension skills that are at fault here. Revisionist history and gaslighting do not win arguments, Either way, I'm done. I hope they give you everything you want, plus a gold plated Rolls Royce for your trouble.
  19. If you dump used motor oil in there, then yes you'll make things worse... but if you use the correct stuff, absolutely nothing gets "gunked". Deoxit exists for a reason. I've used it countless times on more guitars than I can remember, including the blade switch on the 69, and 99% of the time it solves the problem. Why assume that surgery is required? A headache could be a brain tumor, but I'm not reaching for the scalpel until I try some aspirin...
  20. Ok. Good luck to you...tilt at all the windmills you like. But if there was gonna be a recall, it would have happened a year ago.
  21. OK... that was nice of them, but it's also one unit, not a massive free upgrade program and/ or full refund for everybody who bought that particular phone, which is what he's proposed as a solution. And it's Apple... they've got enough money to start their own country if they felt like it. Expecting that degree of "fairness" from a company the size of L6, that makes toys for a tiny segment of the populace is a pipe dream. There's no more recompense coming... we all might a well get used to that idea.
  22. Not in a million years. Sone sort of rebate on a future purchase? Maybe, as this wouldn't cost them nearly as much as your other suggestions, but it would be far from free, and still a long shot, imho. See first answer above. If they were gonna do that en masse, it would have happened some time ago. It certainly won't happen years hence, whenever the next wireless unit shows up. If life were fair, then sure. However, while everything you propose might generate all sorts of warm fuzzy feelings amongst currently unhappy customers, they'd be financially ruinous. You can't take good will to the bank and cash it, and this simply isn't how companies operate. If I'm wrong, so be it... but I'll bet good money that we've already seen the sum total of the efforts to compensate those affected. You'll probably get a replacement unit, as I did... but expecting anything beyond that is just setting yourself up for disappointment.
  23. I didn't say your gripe wasn't valid... on the contrary. It's a perfectly valid complaint, and the device is no longer the same product we all purchased. Unfortunately, true though that may be, it's also irrelevant. Lawyers run the world, and liability issues trump everything... that's just how the world is. This problem is a year old now (give or take), and they've made their position crystal clear. The fix is what it is, and the old firmware ain't coming back... the risk, small as it is, is not something they're going to be willing gamble on. If you get an answer at all, don't be surprised when that's exactly what they tell you.
  24. Yep... and that won't change, no matter how many get posted. Nearly everything you'll ever get from Customtone will be hot garbage... and it's not because the guy who posted it is deaf or crazy. It might sound spectacular... to him, on his end. But that guarantees absolutely nothing for you. He's using different gear than you are, has his own definition of what "sounds good" means, and it's all being filtered through his perceptual lens... and that makes all the difference in the world when it comes to tone. Welcome to the wonderful world of modeling, where my settings won't help you, and yours won't help me. Why? Because the patch is the only common denominator. Everything else in our respective rigs is different.... the guitars, pickups, output method, relative volumes, my fingers, your fingers, the listening environments... and the list goes on, and on, and on. If you're hearing too much compression, back off the gain... you don't always need a much as you think, and having everything dimed isn't necessarily the answer. If you're using a distortion box in front of the amp model, ditch it and try some of the higher gain amp models instead. The two REVVs and the Diezel would be good places to start, and they have so much gain on tap it's ridiculous... you'll never need it all. If the noise floor is a problem, use the noise gate in the input block, that's what it's there for. Next I'd look to your cab block or IR. A tremendous amount of tone shaping happens there... Experiment with different cab/mic combinations. If you're inclined to use 3rd party IR's, the choices are nearly limitless. It requires lots of A/B-ing to find one(s) you like, but it is more of a drag and drop solution, which can be a bit less daunting than tinkering with the stock cabs. An IR is what it is... you either like it or you don't, and there's really nothing to fiddle with. Don't like one? Next... Experimenting is really the only way to find what you want.
