Will you guys post your templates on custom tone? Just to add a bit to the excellent idea you guys have. ... I was thinking of a set list with different amps using the same guitars , or different guitars using the same Amp. Once organized into SET LISTS you could change up tones quickly. This method may not work for users who are trying to nail the tone of every cover song they do, But it could offer a lot of flexibility to players who are less critical of sounding exactly like the original tune. As an example the first three banks might be... Fender deluxe with strat Fender deluxe with les Paul Fender deluxe with Gibson 335 Fender deluxe with telecaster Fender bassman with strat Fender bassman with les Paul Fender bassman with Gibson 335 Fender bassman with telecaster Vox ac 30 with les Paul Vox ac 30 with strat vox ac 30 with rickenbacker Vox ac 30 with telecaster The other thing I am working on is consistency of my effects. By that I mean finding the effects I use most often and keeping them consistent thru My presets. So for example my compressor is always on F1 , my Distortion is on F2, tremolo F3, Reverb F4. Etc... I am not carving this in stone, it is just an approach I am trying. I have been able to get an astounding variety of sounds from any one preset by setting up the amp properly, using my volume and tone knobs, and turning on and off various effects. Good luck in your efforts everyone!

I took a deep breath and heeded the advice I recieved here

Hello smrybaki: In my opinion you are absolutely right in this approach. Just blindly pulling up presets is a waste of time. They have to be edited To make them useful in almost every case anyhow. With about a hundred fx models where to start? Not to mention the amp models. Hey, there is a good place to start. I think you can not go Too far wrong by picking an amp that suits the style you are playing and getting that sounding good Before you add any effects at all. Make several copies of the same amp with different drive, volume, and tone settings. Play with them for a while. You will be surprised how much variation in tone you get just from This alone. When you start to understand how the amp is responding you can then start to add Effects to colour the tone. I have never used huge amounts of effects so this is a big learning curve for me as well. As usual less seems to be more. But not in the case of line 6. I think a lot of the fx presets Need to be tamed down a fair bit. Maybe they set them like that so you can hear what they do at these Extreme settings. To each there own I suppose, but I think a bit of reverb and short delay compliment an amp nicely. I know there are no rules for effects but there is something called conventional wisdom, and I don't Think it hurts to understand what that is when it comes to say, the order of effects in the chain. Once I get a handle on this, I can start to break some rules (at least I will have a better understanding Of where the sound is coming from and why it sounds the way it does) Cheers everyone! -
Acoustic guitar / how do you get a good tone thru an amp?

Ok! Looks like FrFr speakers are way to go. Thanks again. -
Acoustic guitar / how do you get a good tone thru an amp?
wilson69978 replied to wilson69978's topic in POD HD
Thanks cruisin on and max: I figured there was gonna be no easy answer, I will tinker away. I have heard the L2m speakers are amazing But they are not in the cards for me right now. -
Hi folks. One of the things that drew me to the Jtv guitar was the acoustic instruments. I am trying to get a good tone thru my amp. I made a preset using no amp model. The signal flow is ... A mic pre, to a short delay, and a bit of reverb. I am looking for a natural sound. My amp is a fender super champ x2. Head only . The amp is 18 watts. My cab is home made , it holds a 12 inch Celestion G12 vintage 30 speaker. Cab is open backed. The amp is 2 channel and has modelling, but I am using the clean champ model on channel 1 1. I have the amp volume on 5 and bass and treble settings on 5 as well. Are these reasonable amp settings or not? 2. I was thinking a little eq in the signal flow might help. Would that be best between the mic pre and the delay? By the way ... I am using the COMBO FRONT setting on pg 4 of Set up on the pod hd 500x. Thanks for your thoughts people.

New Guy to Variax!!
wilson69978 replied to moleng1's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Congratulations on the new guitar! You got the one I wanted, lol. Mine is the Jtv 69 ( white) I think the blue is really sharp looking, but There were none to be had in my area, so I settled on the white one. I have only had mine about three weeks, and I am lovin it! I also have the hd500x ... It's an awesome beast. Wish I could lug around a DT 25 but I have had back surgery, so they are just too heavy for me. -
I love the feel of my Jtv 69. I got used to the feel of it very quickly. I have a 75 US made strat and I love the feel of that neck too! As far as the mags go... My guitar is fairly new and I have had so much fun with the modelling I have not messed with the mags too Much. They seem to be noisy and bright like most single coils I have used. I just use a noise gate if I have to. Bottom line is ... Yes, I would use it as a regular non modelling guitar. I also love the tremolo bar. In my opinion the quality of the instrument is in line with the cost.

Point taken Silverhead, I have definitely had to adjust my style a bit to get the best out of the variax. A lighter picking style works wonders on many models. I actually play without a pick for a lot of the acoustic models, I use some weird method of my own combining thumb, index, middle and ring fingers for picking arpeggio type stuff... Then use my index finger nail as a guitar pick for single note lines and strumming. It took a little getting used to but it works good for me. The tone is softer or rounder sounding without a guitar pick. For rock and blues, it is the pick all the way! With a dash of index and middle finger here and there.

My action was a but high on my new variax. I did read somewhere on the line 6 site it is set up for 10's on the high E As far as string gauge goes. if you change string gauge you will need a set up for sure. I set up mine same as my strat as far as neck relief goes. The intonation seemed fine. Well for what it's worth, it is a fully functional electric guitar as well as a modelling guitar, so why not set it up the way you do any electric guitar. Just as a thought, regarding pick up height. James Tyler does have a web site with a lot of info on it. You may find something of note there.

Different room, different sound, sounds great at home, sucks live. Heard it a million times. But we all soldier on, don't we. Lol By the way, great advice from everyone.

Amsdenj is correct... In my opinion. On/0ff is not the same as play/stop. Also Silverhead is correct. Bringing up the tuner mode, then disengaging it totally cleared any previous Loops. I couldn't find this info in the manuals but Silverhead knew about it. Guess that's why you are an expert. Thanks so much everyone!!!!

Thank you silverhead. I will try the " tuner " trick.

Thanks Duncann. But shouldn't that fs4 button toggle it on off without midi when in the looper mode? I also find that there is no good way to completely clear a previous loop. (When I have started a new loop and do overdubs and then use undo, I have heard remnants of previous loops that should have been cleared) The manual says you have to stop the loop and a new loop is created when you hit the rec/ overdub button. I used to own the pod hd 400 and had no looper issues. it does work a bit differently, But you can easily completely clear a loop on that unit. I am surprised more users have not complained about this. You never ever see any one on utube or line 6 videos using or even addressing the looper on/off feature. Mmm, is this because it doesn't Work?

No Brazzy. Haven't tried vocoder on the vocals. I sort of prefer more traditional vocal sounds. But I bet lots of users would like the vocoder sounds.

Hello friends: I recently bought the Hd 500x and I am generally quite happy with the machine. Here is a little something I figured out. I made a preset using an Amp on channel A, and a Mic on channel B. Then I called up the looper and started to play around with it. I wondered if the looper would work with the vocals thru the mic, and much to my delight, it does. With the looper set to 1/2 speed you have 48 seconds of vocal loop available. I used the mic/pre, some reverb, and bit of delay on the mic channel and it sounds great. So I played a chorus of a song and strummed the chords and sang the lead vocal. Then I stopped the recording and played the loop. Then I sang the harmony vocal, and played the chords in a different position than what was on the original loop. Overdub a second part and sing along again to do three part harmonies. I realize this is not well suited for live performance, but it works great at home for rehearsal and it's great fun.

HI Austin_ep. Check to see that the looper is in the post position. This seems to work the best because you can change presets and record a new overdub with the new tone intact. In pre mode the overdubs will all use the same dry guitar signal before going to the looper, so when you change a preset all the looped overdubs take on the new preset sound. (not ideal situation) Also if you are switching back to pre after recording overdubs in post mode this will make it louder for sure. Choose post and stick to it unless you have a good reason to use pre. This was a new concept for me and took a bit of thinking to figure it all out. think of it this way. 1. In pre mode all the overdubs are recorded dry, and the 'RECORDED' sound changes every time you pick a new preset (EVEN THE OVERDUBS) 2. In post, all the overdubs are recorded wet (with effects), and overdubs all have the sound (and volume) of the preset they were recorded with. I hope this helps. p.s. consult the manual and keep reading the looper chapter untill you know it cold. It will take a bit, but it's well worth it.

Hello Amsdenj. I recently bought the pod hd 500x as well. On my unit I don't seem to be able to turn the looper on/off either. The FS 4 led ring does not light in the looper mode at all. This must be a software issue. (my Guess). I am not using any midi functionality with the unit, and to be truthful my midi knowledge is not the best when it comes to midi controllers change numbers etc. (But I am willing to learn) So, I am afraid I can't help with your midi controllers question. If you can find, or know of a non- midi solution, I would appreciate the tip.

POD HD500x looper play back sounds nothing like what i played
wilson69978 replied to kyledm's topic in POD HD
Hello Kyledm: To explain a little further for you. Use the post setting if you want the loops to sound the same as when you played them. Also, do not switch back to pre and overdub as this will make the sound much louder. (potentially) Hope this helps a bit. -
Another, happy camper! Good job everyone.

Thanks for your thoughts peewee. Good News, all is up and running well. I plugged in the usb to the usb hub then the VDI to the usb hub, then the usb to the computer and the usb turned green on the usb hub. The VDI side of the hub was still red even when plugged into the guitar, but when I plugged in the 1/4 inch guitar jack cable, the light went solid green. Next I fired up monkey and clicked on the variax usb and all is a go! Thanks for the help!

Well, I give up too. I suspect this is to protect the speaker in the unit so that it does not come on at too loud a level and blow out the speaker. With certain effects chains and levels set high you can get very serious loudness from these amps.
