I've never been a 'stomp' mode/button person, so my command center was clean. Also I had just redone my core tone presets from scratch. I then copy those over to create song specific presets (snapshots), where once I created them, then added to the command center screen to arrange them where I wanted them for best live efficiency.

hmm interesting, I'll have to try that this weekend when I get my stuff setup at my new place.

does it do the same if you reverse which pedal is in 1 vs. 2?

does this fix this issue? I've noticed since the 2.9 release that snapshot button pushes seem to almost trigger a 2nd push. can't remember if its a global setting but having a 2nd push resort back to the previous snapshot is great, when I wanna use it. Its almost like the button isnt releasing before the Helix is looking for a 2nd button push in regards to length of time between pushes. So while its still in a down status to trigger it, the helix is looking for a 2nd possible push and is then reading one push as 2. its stretch, but its all I can wrap my head around as to why it changed in 2.9. Although, I have not tried this where setting the press and release to the same snapshot, maybe that will fix my issues. Nothing worse than jumping into a lead, then realizing the lead isnt on, and having to try and hit it again. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 times to make it 'stick'. I agree this is game changer for me with about a dozen songs, but man what sweet changes I can make in my song presets this way. Just wish it was consistent.

I"ve used some different companies as mentioned above as well, all sounded good. My latest preset iterations are using the York Audio IR's. They are more full range than lots of the other ones I've used, so you need to utilize low/high cuts properly, but the punch/character of them works best for me (right now, lol).

I had this same issue with my LT. Sent it in, they 'fixed' it, new one behaved for about a week, then same issue. I couldnt get it to read 100% toe down unless my foot was resting on it. If i lifted my foot, it'd drop anywhere from 3%-12%. Made it impossible to use the expression pedal to auto engage anything at certain %'s. Ultimately ended up swapping for the full Helix and havent had a problem since.

For myself, it just takes time and trial/error processes to adapt to how your headphones sound/translate to my PA system. I have a powered wedge I use as well, but even that sounds different than through our full PA. Here is my process... 1) create presets using headphones. This is mostly to get the layout, blocks etc...all included and sounded decent. I know my headphones are boomy so I tend to make them a little bit boomy/bassy in the headphones as I know when i hit the next step it'll even out a bit. 2) I play through my powered wedge at a 'reasonable' house volume. Now that I'm in an apartment, I take my rig and spend about 20 min hooked up to see how my headphone attempts translate to the powered wedge, I adjust a few of my presets to get more ballpack. Then if needed, due to being short of time, will compare on my headphones the adjusted presets vs the 1.0 version and make the adjustments to match the 2.0 wedge versions so they are consistent. I know my wedge is pretty tight/clear/punchy, and if it sounds good there, usually sounds pretty decent out front with our PA. 3) during the show I soundcheck and listen to my guitar in the wedge and through the PA to compare how they respond differently. I'll use the Global EQ as a way to quickly tame any highs/lows. THen when I get my rig setup at home, I'll look at the global EQ settings and make adjustments to my presets to re-flatten the global curve. This whole process is lengthy, and a little bit back and forth, but usuallly by the 2nd show, my presets are dialed and locked in. I have good reference core tones that I can then create song specific presets with, where all I have to do is drop in the effects per song if needed.

Newbie having issues with Placater Dirty channel
themetallikid replied to Revvaloon's topic in Helix
I dont know my settings, but I typically have the bass pretty low on this one. I like the additional switch options in the lower settings and will turn those on and then increase the bass as needed to get where I need. I like a lot of mids in my tone, so those usually end up around 7-8, but varies by the song/tone I'm going for. Sometimes I may keep the mids higher to 'send' the larger signal through the chain, but then use a parametric EQ to cut what I dont like about the mid frequencies the amp is fully sending. If that makes sense? -
output block Don't use output block level per snapshot
themetallikid replied to Indianrock2020's topic in Helix
I agree with the concept of the delay/reverb feedback/mix not be adjusted as that would force the Helix to reprocess the input signal I'd think and cause a glitch in the audible sound. However, I use the output block at -4db for all my presets and then change from -4 up to 0db for my lead boosts. I only use Delay on my lead sounds, and only use a touch of reverb on my rhythm presets. In those contexts I dont 'hear' anything in a live situation. I'm sure its there, and if I was a heavier user of those effects as the base of my tone/sound building Id guess this could be plausible, but for my straight up rock n roll approach to this, i dont hear enough to stop using it. -
Copied presets sound different in different setlists
themetallikid replied to markvargha's topic in Helix
agreed, I never had the issues I have with Helix doing the same thing with other units in years past. But, never the less, this is still good advice to always backup. -
Copied presets sound different in different setlists
themetallikid replied to markvargha's topic in Helix
I havent noticed changes in the preset itself when copying/pasting, however I've had other issues. if I'm within a setlist I'll still copy/paste, but if its from setlist > setlist, i've gotten into the habit of exporting/importing. -
i used to use that, however, a few things I learned from the forum and in my own experience... 1) increasing the channel volume, while it doesnt change the tone of the amp...it increases the signal that is hitting the next block in the chain, so it may be boosting any effects post-amp and maybe that is where you are losing your tone you had with your rhythm sound. 2) I run typically 6-10 core tones and then copy/paste/save those into song specific presets. Trying to keep amp models and settings straight became a nightmare when I'd be using the same 2 amps in single amp presets and dual amp presets and different channel volumes to keep them even. Then making tweaks it was hard to remember where my 'home' settings were....so I decided to leave the amp blocks alone once volume matched and find another way. 3) I've done the same thing with output level with a gain block right before the output level spot. There isnt really a difference other than taking up another block location with a gain block. My OCD for preset creation likes output volume settings to match and then i KNOW its consistent between presets utilizing the same sound.
-
This is my method. I design all my presets to be -4db at the Output Block. Then when creating my lead tone from my rhythm tone I add whatever blocks necessary. Usually for me that means adding the TS808 (boosts mids, but also gives me a looser feel on the 'feel' of playing), adding a Delay block. Now, depending on what type of gain you are using in the preset, adding that TS808 (usually gain between 0-2.5 and level between 6.0-10) will change the volume of the preset naturally. The cleaner the preset, the less change I need to make to my -4db output level setting. My cleaner presets I might only have to make the jump to -2.5db, but the higher gain presets (because of the compression with the added gain) I may need to go to 0.0db.

got it I think, at least enough to make today useful, lol.

I think I got the recording/arming of tracks figured out. But the monitoring is still throwing me for a loop....
-
Also, where do I monitor from. With the Helix I monitored via the Helix Headphone jack...I have a headphone jack on the XR18, and I can hear spotify run through it, but can't get playback from tracks in my project. I tried headphones directly out of laptop, nothing. I tried the powered wedge I have on the outputs of the mixer...nothing.
-
OK, downloaded the driver, installed and I can get it to now detect XAIR as my input source. I changed the input track to 18 max, outputs are 1 & 2.... however when I arm a track to record, how do I choose which channel it is looking at? With Helix, I could choose which one it was being sent through.

2.9 Helix-HX Command Center Snapshots/Preset Tutorial
themetallikid replied to Lone_Poor_Boy's topic in Helix
yeah there are definately some behavior flaws when controlling snapshots in the Stomp Mode vs other modes. 1) I've noticed my snapshots when i push them while playing, almost seem to register a (2nd push) so it resorts back to the previous snapshot immeidately and a 2nd attempt to select the snapshot then sticks. I've played through our live sets a few times at home with this and there are lots of times I've noticed this. Socks, shoes, programming in a chair or performing songs standing up....same erratic behavior. 2) I have 1 preset that snapshots work fine in my 4/4 split mode, but in Stomp Mode, i cannot change from the original snapshot. I have 3 programmed Rhythm, Bridge, Lead. And when I push the Bridge or Lead snapshots the 'E' shows up near the name of the preset on the screen, but no audible/visual changes happen in my preset. I can exit stomp mode and snapshots work fine without backing out and rearming the preset. This was one of the last songs i programmed out of about 90, so I know I set it up correctly. Even double checked, restarted Helix, etc and same behavior on this preset only. 3) I've noticed a lag when changing presets as well. I have a Preset Prev/Next buttons programmed and they work, but there is a lag in the change time vs my 4/4 split mode. Also, it'd be helpful if I could somehow see the names of the Next/Prev presets in my setlist. Otherwise I'm going into a song blindly. (I recognize I can look on my paperlist, but when singing and playing, in the 4/4 mode, its nice to see the next 4 songs coming up or bank up and preview the next songs coming. If we were to get a request, I'd have to exit into 4/4 mode and then bank up/down to find the request, then enter stomp mode again...I can handle this, but it'd be cool to see the next/prev presets somewhere. Not sure where you would display that though. -
Could i route my preset sound out FX Loop Send 1 into my talkbox pedal, then of course up the tube into a mic, but then run that mic into the Mic Input and thus route it back through the output the normal preset output? Eliminating a 2nd input channel in our mixing lineup? In my head this seems feasible, I'm not in front of my Helix to see the possibilities...but would allow a 2nd mic for the talkbox without the tube getting in the way during 80% of the setlist I sing, but not require any additional channels or mixing (we run our own sound at shows mostly)

yeah I ordered the cable with a longer length. I figure I can get the cable to solve the length issue for me...if it doesnt lock into the receive still then I can get a new transmitter and I"ll have a backup cable and transmitter (although shorter) if I ever need it. On a side note, this sparked a question in my head.....if I have 2 transmitters and a single receiver, could I use both transmitters, set to different frequency channels and just attach to my straps then? so guitar changes would just be taking guitar off/on and not having to disconnect the plug? It'd be nothing to adjust the channel on the receiver...or if I just mute each transmitter as I switch can they both be on the same channel? if it is just the cable, then maybe I'll get a 2nd one and go this route as it'd make it even easier at gigs... all about the easy lately...lol
-
bringing this back for discussion. I've been using my buddie's G50 he gave me. No issues tone/distance wise....however....few things cause its used that I'm concerned about. I had the thread about a longer cable, and I have no issues with getting one of those..however....I usually have always had my pack on my belt, and the short cable doesnt allow that. THe longer cable should fix that...but putting it on my strap has given way to another potential issue....the cable comes out of the transmitter rather easily. and because of the 3 pin type of jack it uses its not easy to get it back in without a significant drop in play time. Do these fail often? Is it an issue of the cable or the transmitter jack? I dont want to invest in a new cable if I need a new transmitter. The cost of a new transmitter almost justifies me buying a brand new unit all together to get a warranty and new battery door (the battery door isnt a deal breaker for me)

what you are asking can be done. you have 10 buttons available in stomp mode. Just dedicate 2 buttons to Next/Prev HX Presets. and that leaves you 8 buttons to setup as stomps (or combinations of things within one button) to create 'mini' pedal boards if you will. You could even 'bookend' your presets. Example: Preset 1: Stomp button 1>HX Preset Next, this leaves 9 buttons for stomp switches to be used however Preset 2-???: Stomp button 1 and 2 > HX Preset Prev/Next, leaves 8 buttons for stomp switches to be used however Preset ???: Stomp Button 1> HX preset Prev, this leaves 9 buttons available for stomp switches to be used however. Ive never been an analogue pedalboard guy, the tap dancing would surely leave me off balance and on the floor most the night lol, but if I had to set it up....I would create mini pedal boards based on sounds/genres or likelihood of use. Instead of viewing it as 1028 presets, i'd see it as 1028 pedalboards. I'd create my core items for my replacement rig (amps/cabs) and then place fx around those pieces to make my pedal board. to allow the most space (again, not a pedal board guy) I'd put my amp at the end of signal path 1 and my cab at beginning of signal path B to give the most block spaces available pre/post amp/cab slots.

New Variax in the works???
themetallikid replied to themetallikid's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Yeah I hear that and I've been keeping an eye on it for new stuff coming out and all. Just seems to be filling my email inbox more lately. In my head I read that as, blow out inventory before announcement for the fall/xmas season comes around so we can build the hype and not sit on the current inventory. Wishful thinking, more than likely yes. -
I just outfitted my guitars all with the same strap. its a regular nylon type one, its thick enough across my shoulder, but hte thickness of the material is nowhere near that. Even my last suede ones were thicker and wouldnt be thick enough to satisfy the gap in the metal belt clip. Always just kept my old wireless in my back pocket or attached on my belt behind me, but this cable isnt nearly long enough.
