Can my luthier repair my JTV69?
Charlie_Watt replied to guitar4u's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I think it's actually easier to change pickups on a JTV (not active maybe) since they just solder to nice points on a board. Anyone who has changed pickups on a Strat could handle it with ease and minimal risk. -
No JTV Set-up Info from Line6
Charlie_Watt replied to Guitarkyller's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
They should publish guidelines like the other guitar companies. That's all the specs are anyway. Every experienced guitarist has their own preferences for a setup. The guidelines are for a starting point and the guitar should play well with them. -
Can my luthier repair my JTV69?

Calling him a Luthier means that he should be trained to do guitar setups. There are good and bad luthiers just like every other field of expertise. Good ones get a good reputation in the area and I would trust them to work on my JTV if it wasn't an electronics issue. Sending it to a Line6 service center is just as much a crap shoot as taking it to an unknown luthier IMO. I am sure that there are some very good techs at some of them and I bet that some have no clue what they are doing. -
variax 500 usb interface
Charlie_Watt replied to terrycowley's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
If you have any use for a Pod I would go that route. The Variax to USB interface itself is hard to find and overpriced and it doesn't do anything but allow you to connect to Workbench or Monkey. The Pod has lots more utility and they are very available used. -

I learned enough years ago from Dan's book to do my own setups. I highly recommend this book!!!! I am not sure I would say that anyone can do it. I have seen some all thumbs folks that I would not trust with a screwdriver. Everyone needs to know their limitations. I personally would only take my guitar to a pro if it had a problem that I don't feel comfortable to deal with my self. This would include refretting, and nut making. I have fooled with nut adjustments and they are the kind of thing that I can do but I don't do it often enough to be good at it. I don't have the tools to do refretting. I would probably opt for a replacement neck if the frets were really bad. -
I would post from my phone if I could see the $%^ screen. :) I post from my PC since I am in front if it most of the day at work anyway. BTW I am the oldest guy in my group at work at 64. Many of my buds have retired.

JTV-89F + Pod XT Live

I think he will get mags through VDI but maybe not both models and mags at the same time. -
I am very sure that this forum does not represent the true user base for Line6 products.

Can my luthier repair my JTV69?
Charlie_Watt replied to guitar4u's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I would rather trust them to a known good luthier - especially if I could avoid shipping them. More likely to come back in better condition then they went out in. I am sorry but most of a JTV setup is not magic. I have maintained my 500 myself for a decade and it's better than when I received it. -
Over 60 - think Beatles Song. When I'm ??

High E string slipping on the JTV69
Charlie_Watt replied to the29band's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I understand Line6's stand on fooling with the electronics but I do not understand why they would not publish setup info. Every guitar in the world needs a setup sometime - especially a new one. It is not practical to send them to Line6 for a setup. They are likely to come back worse then when they left given what can happen in shipping. Any good guitar tech should be able to set up a JTV. -

All we are asking for are the simple setup specs. That is not too much to ask. Adjusting pickup height and action should not risk voiding the warranty. The JTV comes with tools to make those adjustments! -

I caught it first time - already had one cup of morning coffee! -
Also - don't waste much time with the factory presets. They mostly suck which really gives a bad first impression.

You might try downloading the file to update if you have not already. That might eliminate the server issues. -
High E string slipping on the JTV69
Charlie_Watt replied to the29band's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I am sure the issues with the neck are a combination of playing style and hand size. I do not think there is any one style neck that suits everyone. The advantage of a bolt on neck is that you can change it to one that suits your taste quite easily. It costs some $$ but we all want a guitar that we like to play so I think it's silly to complain about the neck and not do something about it. Some call it a bad design but others kind of like it. It's not a manufacturing defect but a design decision. -
If you do this, make sure all are plugged into the same power outlet or strip or you will probably have some ground loop noise.

Finally updated my firmware... got quite a surprise.
Charlie_Watt replied to PeterJH's topic in POD HD
If your patches are louder then something global has changed. The gloal EQ won't cause that. -
I have noticed (by looking at the serial #) that Sweetwater is now selling some JTV's made in 2013. Their last batch I looked at was made in 2014.

Jtv-59 Selector Switch Not Working
Charlie_Watt replied to ltmsc's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Replace the switch. Full Compass has them. -
Do you notice this behavior in Edit 500 since update?
Charlie_Watt replied to Hey_Joe's topic in POD HD
Mine still loads the last patch that I had selected. I have had the new FW on it since it came out. -
You are jumping to conclusions here. I don't think the power supply has to be regulated to work just fine since the Pod has it's own voltage regulation. Unless you have monitored the supply with a scope, you can't say it's a problem.
