I haven't heard a timeframe yet, but I assume it won't be too long. Sorry I can't be of more help.- 40 replies

This setting is really there to give you the opportunity to match what would happen if you plugged into the real pedal or amp. If you set the input-Z parameter to auto, the input impedance will change depending on whatever you have first in the chain. After that, what order you have effects in a chain does not matter, at least as it related to impedance. There is no loss due to impedance mismatches within the HD's internal signal chain. With active pickups, I you really shouldn't be hearing nearly as much effect from the input-Z parameter as you do with passive pickups. The pickups themselves don't experience the same sort of loading.

They will be coming out with a new firmware for Amplifi soon, don't forget. Hopefully that will help some of these lingering dropout issue. I have been fortunate. I have both the 150 and the TT, and I have not really had problems with losing the BT connection. But yes, as noted above, there are a lot of things that can cause interference with Bluetooth.

89F modeling is differnent than 69
phil_m replied to frstrat's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Well, the 89F is using a totally different piezo system than the 69. It uses the Graph Tech Ghost pickups while the 69 uses the LR Baggs Radiance. So some of that could be attributed to that. -
So 10 years ago or so I remember seeing this band that was moderately successful. They were touring and the guitarist managed to get some endorsements. He was endorsed by Peavey, and had a 5150 II half stack I believe. I noticed he also had a Flextone II half stack on stage with him but he had removed the logos. I knew enough about Line 6 at the time to recognize it. So I was talking to him afterwards, and he told me that he really like the Flextone, but he had to remove the logos so he didn't get in trouble with Peavey... So it really depends on the artist. Some artists really do seem to be gear whores who will sell their soul for free gear if they can. It was funny to me that this guy was happy enough to use Line 6, but he didn't want to jump off the Peavey gravy train at the time. Who can blame him, I guess...

Well, that would be less fiddling around in your presets. The drawback to doing all the routing noted before is that you'd have to set every preset you use at a gig up that way. Using a small mixer to take care of your IEM makes more sense to me. It also frees up the Helix to do other cool stuff.

Will new firmware bring new effects and amps at no cost?
phil_m replied to josephyballew's topic in Helix
If you need a selection of 200 amps to find one you like, maybe you have other issues... :D -
Yes, it will "see" external controllers, although, that's not probably the best terminology. When you hit the "learn controller" command, it will respond to whatever CC is sent. If you happen to send it a CC that is dedicated to something else (like looper play) it will tell that one is unavailable. Right now, the harmonizer doesn't account for custom scales. That would be a nice feature, though.

Yeah, there isn't a MIDI clock sync on Helix right now. I imagine it's only a matter of time before it is implemented given that even the POD HD has it, but at launch, it's not there. When you tap a tempo into Helix, it does indeed set it to the nearest tenth of a BPM. If Abelton Live does round up or down to the nearest integer, I suppose that could cause some inconsistencies. Like you said, too, there will always be some slight difference when you have two clocks going. I've found that if it's just syncing two delays or modulations together, it generally works OK unless you're dealing stuff with really long tails. If you think about how you use a delay effect, for instance, you're constantly resetting it whenever you hit a chord. So even if the two effects are off a little, you generally don't let them ring out enough to hear them get off. It's possible, though. I've often synced delay pedals the low tech way on my pedalboard - tapping in the tempo separately into each pedal - and it's been close enough for rock and roll, as they say. I would think tying two tap tempos together with MIDI, even it is imperfect, is going to at least be better than that. As far as syncing the looper, the looper isn't tied to BPM in anyway. It is completely independent of tempo. DI mentioned it somewhere, but basically the memory architecture of a device like the Helix and a dedicated quantizable and tempo-based looper are pretty different. So it might just not be feasible to ever expect that type of looping from the Helix.

Nope... You're on your own... ;) I'm sure they will. Some of the videos already released go into it. The thing is that it's very intuitive to use. You can probably figure out 90% of the operation without ever seeing a manual.
-
It's shipping now. Line 6 never announced an official release date, so any date retailers were saying was based on their own guesses. There are reports of a few brick and mortar stores having units now, and online retailers should be receiving their shipments any day now. I imagine by next week quite a few people will have them in hand.
-
You can still assign MIDI commands to the tap footswitch. So you could easily assign whatever CC Ableton needs for tap tempo and have them sync up that way.
-
This is the final version of the manual, at least for the current firmware. I'm sure it will be updated to correspond with whatever changes are made to firmware in the future. Whether there will be something like an advanced guide, I don't know. Many of the parameters are common between the amp, cab, and effect models, and those are explained. Are far the CC messages for individual parameters, that's not how it works. Because of the possibility of having multiple instances of the same effect and complex signal chains, there simply aren't enough CC messages to assign every parameter of every effect a dedicated CC. But you can still control these things by using the "learn controller" feature in the "Controller Assign" menu. If you want to use a particular CC to control a certain parameter, the Helix will learn up to 64 CCs per preset. It's actually way more useful and powerful than a static MIDI map in that regard.
-
They've said about one man-month, iirc. So if they have two people working on a model, it could be a total of two weeks. It just depends on how they want to allocate their resources.

Wow, that's a really elegant solution. I think I was getting hung up on the sending three stereo outputs from one path, and I forgot that it was as simple as creating a parallel path and setting the sends as outputs...
-
Yep, the Helix application will eventually be the editor as well. For the time being it's just the librarian and IR loader. Honestly, it's so easy to edit on the Helix itself, I don't know if people will miss the editor all that much. When it is available, it is really just going to mimic what's on the Helix's screen.

I'm not completely unsympathetic to your situation, but are there really that many companies continuously supporting software like this for 12 years or more? The XTL was released in 2004 and discontinued in 2007 or thereabouts. The XT bean was released in 2002. It's great you've been able to get a lot of use out of the XTL, and actually even without the editor, it's still useful. Line 6 still does actually support the XLT by means of updating drivers, so it's still useful as an audio interface. And I'm sorry, but the resale value of the XTL has been at bargain basement prices for a long time now. There have been two more generations of PODs released since then. Electronic gear just doesn't hold its value like a piece of analog equipment unless it somehow gets deemed to be "vintage" or collectible.
