Hx stomp latency while using it as audio interface
soundog replied to armored_guitar's topic in Helix
Its helps to understand the difference between software and hardware monitoring in DAW recording systems. If you are listening to your guitar with headphones through hardware (such as the Stomp or through an audio interface), there is no perceptible latency (maybe about 0.001 ms!). And your DAW takes care of making sure your metronome and recorded tracks are synched with your new guitar track. When using a DAW with software monitoring (using DAW/software instruments or plug-ins and listening to their effects with headphones), you will have latency. The amount will mainly depend on your DAW and computer settings, your operating system, and your computer's processing power. You can start to have >10 ms latency with software monitoring (especially when using small buffer settings). If you are doing your guitar processing in software while playing (with Helix Native, for example), that's when you might run into latency that can mess up your timing. And your sense of reality! -
Hx stomp latency while using it as audio interface
soundog replied to armored_guitar's topic in Helix
When you use the Stomp as your audio interface (via USB) you will have no latency. You will be hearing the DAW metronome (and any recorded tracks) along with your real-time guitar playing .... all through headphones. Plus, you can record into your DAW a "wet" stereo track with your HX effects plus a dry mono guitar track. Its simple and it all works nicely. Just read the manual as @datacommando sez. If you prefer to use a different audio interface for recording, you can do the same sort of thing (and with zero latency) if you take a line out of the Stomp into your audio interface. How you wire it will be depend on your interface. And, if you want to record a dry signal plus wet you'll need a way to split your guitar signal going into the interface (such as via a passive DI box). -
Its really quite scrumptious how versatile the Stomp's Exp/FS 4 and 5 setups are. They'll accommodate all sorts of hardware connections.

Opinion on PA Speakers vs. Studio Monitors for Home Use?
soundog replied to jammin4joy's topic in Helix
You didn't like the sound out of your Bose? Decent studio monitors that will do what you want to do (loud, feel it, etc) would be very expensive. You would be better served by a PA/powered speakers. I've used a Bose L1 for years with Helix stuff, and it sounds great to me.... -
Sometimes you can buy them as cheap as you can build them! But the lighted LED switches are harder to find, so I built mine. I like lights!

Use your TRS Y-cable to 2 TS jacks. Then use a short 1/4" cable to connect either expression pedal or foot switch as needed for 4 and/or 5. So, you have options for A) an expression pedal on 4 and a footswitch on 5 (or vice versa), or B) a foot switch on 4 and a foot switch on 5. Very flexible! The video you shared is a good one and will work. For that foot switch you will use a "momentary" foot switch like this one. If you want an LED light to tell you the on/off status of the switch, use a latching foot switch like this one. If you use that kind of switch, you will also need a battery in the stomp box to light the LED (find instructions online). For 9V power, a >470 Ohm resistor should be used with the LED. You will also need to set your switch type (in Stomp's Controller Assignments) to "Momentary" for the latching LED switch to work correctly with the Stomp. P.S. If you use a latching switch with LED, you will need to make sure the Stomp is synchronized with the switch. So, if your Stomp preset is saved with the switch "off" you need to make sure your switch is turned "off" (LED not lit) when you first select the preset!

I am especially excited about buying a ticket to see Rusty Chainsaw play at the 2021 Tire Burnout Contest. Are tickets available yet?

HX Stomp XL - how many of you were waiting for this?

<excruciating exasperated sigh> -
Yes, the lack of Command Center was the primary reason I had not purchased a Stomp. But its in there now, so I bought one. Thanks Line 6. Now ..... would you please give us a version with Variax support? ; -)

Watch this video. This guy wrings some good sounds out of the acoustic sim:

I just saw @Daleosq, the OP, over at the corner bar. He obviously had had a few.

Yes, this is a great method to audition! But do keep in mind that you need to try to volume match as much as possible, because its easy to gravitate towards "louder." There is a lot of variation in the output level of IRs. Also, the low and high roll off frequencies can really affect the sound.

I replaced the pot in my Ernie Ball VP JR with a 25k linear pot and it now works nicely with my Stomp. I'm not familiar with the regular VP, or if there is some switching going on with that unit.

My ears don't lie to me because I brought them up right. And they are good looking.
-
I added some of these to my standard preset list to have handy (esp like the Lost Glaciers and the Verscios) . Thanks.

When in Snapshot mode, can "touch" capacitance behavior be used to select Snapshots via touching foot switch 1, 2, or 3? I use the Stomp on desktop, so would like to use "touch" for selecting Snapshots. I can find no way to activate touch for Snapshot mode (other than the usual swap or copy Snapshots function). Further, I'm not able to turn "touch" off for Snapshot mode, even though the manual says that, for Snapshots, "touch behavior for footswitches can be disabled using the Stomp Select option in”Global Settings > Footswitches” Even when turned off, the copy and swap Snapshots touch functions are still active. I'm running firmware 3.01.

Just rewired a beat up old Ernie Ball VP JR volume pedal with a linear taper 25k pot. Put in a new string just for added fun. Its working perfectly with my Stomp, so I wired a little "fourth" switch on the side of the Stomp for using the tuna in Snapshot mode.

Sorry, Phil .... I didn't mean you. Your smiley face was very gentle. And it was sideways, which makes it even more gentle.
-
What if you get old and stop shredding and buy an acoustic guitar and start playing some James Taylor. You will want an audio interface with XLR inputs like your Babyface. Just sayin'.
-
Jeepers, fellas! All Shawn needed was a gentle "You need to download and install HX Edit 3.00....". Most of us guitar players make a little mistake now and then....

Since Line 6 added the MIDI Control Center and a couple of more blocks to the Stomp, I decided to purchase one. Plus, I’m recording at home a lot more than when I had pre-pandemic gigs, and I wanted to see how the Stomp would integrate with my studio. It does so nicely. Here are a few things I’ve learned: Setup: I’m using an Apollo Twin for my main audio interface. Its tasked with microphone input, and for controlling my monitor speakers (2 sets). I’m using the Stomp for guitar and bass input (I was using the Apollo before). My DAW is Logic Pro X running on an iMac, running Catalina OS X. Your mileage may vary on another OS or using a different audio interface, but things should be similar. Cabling: Stomp to Mac via USB. Apollo to Mac via Thunderbolt. The Stomp L and R Outputs are cabled to the Apollo L and R Line Inputs via balanced TRS cables. (I link the Apollo L and R inputs so I can set levels with one knob.) I’ve got my studio monitors coming out of the Apollo. I can connect headphones to either the Stomp or the Apollo for monitoring (more on this later). I run the Stomp in Snapshot mode, so I ran a TRS Y-cable out of the Expression jack, with the tip side going to a little pushbutton switch to turn the tuner on and off. And the ring side goes to my expression pedal for Wah and Volume pedal. Sample Rate: I run my studio at 48k sample rate (24-bit), which plays nicely with the Stomps default sample rate. Monitoring: I avoid software monitoring from a DAW whenever possible, because I don’t like latency, however short. I just don’t. One of the beauties of the Stomp and the Apollo (and many modern interfaces) is that you can use real-time monitoring of your input with zero (software) latency. With the Apollo, you can use its built-in DSP for real-time monitoring via plug-ins. Same for the Stomp; you can have real-time monitoring of your wet guitar signal. I use the Apollo for monitoring with headphones when recording tracks using microphones (so I’m hearing the microphone input along with the DAW output). I use the Stomp for monitoring with headphones when recording tracks using guitars (I’m hearing the wet guitar input along with the DAW output). I’ve tried using an aggregate device so I could use the Stomp for input and the Apollo for output, but then I still have to deal with using software monitoring and the latency it introduces. I’ve also tried using Blackhole, Jack, and Loopback apps as a workaround…. but can’t get around latency tied to software monitoring. So …. I use either the Apollo (microphones) or the Stomp (guitars) for real-time zero-latency monitoring when recording tracks, selecting the appropriate interface in Logic. Recording Guitars: I select Stomp as my audio input and output device. I record two tracks; one stereo wet via the Stomp’s USB 1/2 channels, along with USB 5 dry mono (in case I need it later for re-amping, using with Native or another amp sim plug-in (I like S-Gear and Neural DSP). I monitor through headphones in the Stomp (with the Stomp set as Logic’s audio out L/R). I almost always have HX Edit running alongside Logic when tracking guitar because its so much quicker to tweak things. After recording, I switch my Logic audio back over to the Apollo for mixing through monitors or recording tracks via microphone. MIDI Clock: I have Logic set up to send MIDI clock to the Stomp via USB for time-based guitar effects such as delay. With HX Edit running, I can quickly see if it’s working by looking at the Tempo field in the upper right; if it says [External] I know synch is working. Practicing (No Computer): Since I’ve got my Stomp cabled to the Apollo, I can easily play straight through to my monitors without requiring my computer or DAW. I've tried a number of guitar doo-dads in the studio, (plug-ins, Kemper, Strymon Iridium, etc) but find the Stomp to (perhaps) be the best well-rounded solution so far....

1. The Stomp is an amazingly versatile little box in terms of audio and MIDI and I/O that I've come across. And if you set it up correctly with your DAW the latency is zilch when monitoring your guitar while recording. You gotta read the manual, though. It's worth it. 2. I recently bought mine used for $400, which was a good deal. The unit is worth the $599 MSRP .... there's a lot of engineering packed in the box.
