Without some high-quality sound clips of each "mod" I have no reason to believe there will be much of a noticeable difference.

Try the Elektrik model, its a "custom" 5150-type model. Might respond differently to the distortion models.

Helix HX Effects Alternative Power Supply, Now Only $12.99!
gunpointmetal replied to robberns's topic in Helix
Just because a few people found ways to make it work doesn't make a good design, lol. It was a pain in the lollipop if you wanted to mounted you HD500X to a moderately-sized board just for safety/transport purposes, its a pain in the lollipop on a multi-socket power conditioner, its a pain in the lollipop on straight power strips, its a pain in the lollipop. (big period) -
If the output levels are that different just turn it up till it matches the sound. I mean, if you're going for something that sounds like lollipop, running a Rat with the gain on 50 into ANY high-gain amp will get you some lollipop tone. Dial it in with your ears, not your eyes. It's different gear. Maybe they modeled two different versions of the rat for the different makers? Or maybe the hardware reacts differently to your gear than you computer does?
-
Maybe try dialing it in by how it sounds than by trying to get your numbers to match up. Personal experience with VSTs versus the Helix is that VSTs rarely have comparably accurate knob sweeps as far as "50 on the gain on this VST is exactly the same amount of gain that you get at 5 on the real pedal". No insults intended, but a Rat into a 5150 or the 2204 sounds like a recipe for harsh mud. There's a reason most guys are using their boost ODs with the gain between 0-2 and then the level goosed into the front of the amp. If I ran my boosts at 50% gain even with the amp models gain at 2 it would be waaaaaay too overdriven. Just try tweaking by ear versus by #.
-
It sounds about as "real" as any single-function harmonizer pedal I've ever tried. If you want the sound of two guitarists playing in harmony run a dual-mono chain after the harmonizer with different amps, ODs, etc. with a short delay right before it hits all that stuff, otherwise there's no reason to expect it to sound like two different guitars, just one guitar with a pitch effect on it.

I couldn't find a "turn off apple music" setting on the App. If I have to menu dive in my phone every time I want to use the app it sort of begins to negate the convenience of the app. I logged a support ticket about this issue as well as that I've having to log in to the app every time I start it up. L6 is aware of the autoplay issue an apparently they are "working on it." Hopefully there will be one more app/firmware update before this thing goes EOL.
-
Mine does the same thing. No autoplay features are turned on, I can't see any way to change this behavior from the settings menu. I'm gonna make a track of 45 seconds of a slowly rising wind sound and name it AAAAAAAAA so it plays first when I load it up and I have time to stop the music before Cephalic Carnage starts playing at top volume. This bug kinda sucks and makes me not really wanna mess with the remote. I also have to log into the app EVERY TIME I start it up, which is lollipoping stupid.

Doesn't make sense to give up a flex block to reiterate an effect that's already there.

Except I know very few sound guys that are actually running a channel compressor on high gain guitars, which is what I'm using it for. Common practice for guitar is to use the compressor AHEAD of any drive/gain stages to even out the sound that gets driven or to limit dynamics on a clean channel for stuff like finger picking or tapping. It seems kinda dumb for a guitar processor to have a compressor that can ONLY be placed after gain stages. Have you ever tried to run a compressor in the FX loop of a real amp or after a high gain distortion pedal? Feedback city at all but the lowest settings, especially if there is any drive/distortion. Even with a fully-configurable signal chain (i.e. being able to move any block anywhere in the chain) this thing would still be leagues behind the Helix and in no way encroach on its user base unless they were in way over their head with Helix, and in that case they'd probably move down to something simpler anyways. And the sounds in Helix are quite a bit better, as well as the overall quality of available FX and amp models.
-
Given where development stopped, I'm surprised they even bothered to put XLR outs on the hardware.
-
So is it officially done as far as development goes? Are we stuck with a compressor after all drive/amp blocks? Are we stuck with completely disabling iTunes in the app if we don't want to have the first track blast out of our headphones when we start up the app? are we stuck having to log into the App every other time we open it? this thing is soooooo close to being a worthy live backup device, but as of right now its pretty much only good for home jamming (which it is very good for), but it seems a few minor tweaks could really improve things.

US retail return laws actually a negative for music
gunpointmetal replied to lawrence_Arps's topic in Helix
Part of the issue is with music gear that places like Guitar Center don't have the facilities or allow you the time to really understand how something as complicated as the Helix sounds/functions. You can read manuals all day long and still have questions when you finally get to using it, but you're going to have to hook it up to your gear with with your guitars and put it through the paces of what you need it to do before you can definitely say it will be what you need it to be. Image if the ONLY test drive you got with a car you had to buy was reading the manual and then pulling it forward in the lot, then backing it up into the place it was parked, then when you go to check the radio 35 other cars in the lot all turn on their radios with with windows down, and when you go to put the windows up the dealer looks at you like you lollipop on the floor already. As far as tire-kicking at the local brick-and-mortar and ordering online.....if the stores would figure out a way to add value to you buying from them other than the convenience of return that doesn't require shipping (you know, like hiring staff that is actually knowledgeable, putting people into departments where they actually have some experience, shopper rewards programs, etc) then maybe it wouldn't go that way so much, and the stores would get more sales. I don't/haven't been a return policy abuser, but I also never actually go to GC unless I need a cable last minute or something because 9/10 people in there are either working in a department that is outside their expertise, do not give two deuces about customer service, or they're so part time they're trying to get away with as little customer interaction as possible. -
What kind of mixer are you plugging into? Are there any additional A/D-D/A conversions going on in the mixer? How are you monitoring? IEM, wedges? are you standing a distance away from your speakers while playing? Are you hearing the "bounceback" from the FOH on stage? I've never personally run into this issue, but I do know what running my 1/4" into a wedge for stage monitoring and then running the other 1/4" into our XR18 digital mixer than into a UHF IEM set does introduce a very, very tiny amount of latency to the IEMs compared to the wedge. If I'm more than 10' from the wedge, though, I can't tell the difference.

Weird, I turned mine on, grabbed and OD model, noise gate, amp model, cab model, turned the EQ dials to where I liked them, and had a totally usable practice/recording tone through my headphones and my studio monitors. Took that tone to rehearsal, tweaked it for higher volume, added my FX, assigned my footswitches, and have barely tweaked it since. This thing certainly does not require any engineering degree to operate and works much quicker IMO as far as getting everything set-up and assigned than any other modeler I've tried. If it's not working for you, buy something else. Line 6 doesn't owe you a personally satisfying experience when MOST users are enjoying the device. The whiners are always the loudest, though.

Are you logged in to youtube? I guess they might have age restrictions due to lyrical/title content?

Cool, between the bass and guitar we like to cover a lot of ground without getting into “shred†territory. Disgunt was supposed to the sonic equivalent of getting hit by a truck, lol.

Shouldn’t be? It’s uploaded through tunecore, I don’t know if they have regional issues.

In this band I'm playing a 9-string guitar tuned A-E-A-E-A-D-G-B-E. The low A is the same note as though a five-string bass were tuned down a step, followed by the low E of a four-string bass, then tuned like a seven-string guitar in Drop A. Guitars are Helix's 5150 model with a Mesa OS IR from Rosen Digital. In this band I'm playing a 9-string in the same "double drop-A" tuning as well as an 8-string in drop E tuning. Guitars are Helix 2204 Mod with the same Mesa OS IR.
-
For sure. I don't really djent, but I do like to stay out of the way of the bass player, lol.
-
Nice! I haven't really tried to do it with bass cabs yet. Do you get a little more "note" in the low end? I'm usually high-passing anywhere from 80-110Hz so I didn't even really think about using a bass cab. Definitely have to give it a try.
-
Helix Native is what you're looking for. To do that in the editor you literally need to have ALL of the FX/AMPS/CABS algorithms in the computer anyways. At that point it's not longer an Editor, its a standalone processing program.

Its the same power supply as the HD500X, right? the Problem is, it sticks out over a power strip/outlet too far if the plug is oriented one way, or it covers 2-3 other outlets the oriented the other way, and its just wide enough that you can't really plug anything in next to it even if it doesn't actually completely cover the outlets neighboring it. It was a bad design for the HD, and it a bad design now. Should have went in-line, then you can tuck that actual power supply wherever.

I gotta ask...are several of you PM'ing each other to make fun of other forum members? And then proceeding to give other people are hard time for their online behavior?

So I play 8 and 9 string guitars tuned roughly in the ranges of 4 and 5 string basses. I'm a big fan of the crossover split for heavy gain tones because I can distort/boost the low end separate from the high end and blend them together at my IR. Just wondering if anyone else out there is doing stupid low tuning and if you have any tips/tricks/preferences for your tones with the Helix.
