JTV 89F Questions
psarkissian replied to mileskb's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Regarding #2,... yes it was done as a custom job for guitarist Oz Noy by Touch Singleton of Singleton Guitar Works. It was a serious mod, both mechanically and electronically. Such a mod is very involved, not for the faint of heart or someone not experienced with guitar mods on this level. I was consulted about the electronics aspects of it, as a favor to the boss and Touch,... as a favor for Oz. Touch Singleton does nice work. -
hopperpost,... it turned out to be a quick fix. Left a note wit the Support guy about it.

Another battery/charger question
psarkissian replied to LDBecker's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
"How does the charger behave when it's charging/done charging? Is there a difference in the light pattern? I'm thinking I blew the charger - it was just left plugged in, probably since I bought it."--- Could be any of the above, could even be a problem with power management in the battery box. Your profile here says LA, I should probably check it out. I'm the guitar guy here. Log a support ticket in your account. -
"If I went as far as too add a pickup that was solely dedicated to the Sustaner circuit and no connection with the Variax wiring and circuit the it would work independently?"--- if you could get it to work that way, yeah. "if I routed out the body to fit the other battery and controls could that work?"--- there will be a change in tone color, as the density of wood will change when you route it. You may or may not notice it. "Is this something that could be commissioned?"--- out-of-warranty, you would want to find someone in your area who is good with electric guitar mods. Shop around, check references. There are those out there who say they're good, and those who are, then there are those who know enough about Variax and JTV to do a descent job. "Would line 6 do that?"--- afraid not. We don't endorse or support mods. If you were to send your guitar in the most I would do is make it a stock guitar to the stock specs. I'm allowed to advise what not to do, and how to not get into trouble with this stuff. And I already have a full plate of work. I kept busy here. The mods I've done for notables, were favors for the bosses, as off-the-clock projects without time constraints. Put all of that on hold, as I've juggling too many plates in the air lately.

Re-stock is usually with dealers. I don't know that we would have that on the L6 store. The guitar would come back to me in any case, since I'm the JTV guy here. -
"Can anyone tell me what is the difference between an amp and a PA?"--- Amps are for general amplification, but can also be optimized for specific amplification uses from musical instrument amplification to aerospace uses, and all amplifying uses in between. PA (Public Address) is a term from olden days of audio electronics (from before my time even). A generic term used to specify the use of the audio electronics. PA is used for a wider range of audio frequencies than just for a particular audio/music instrument. Today, the term "sound reinforcement" is used for an even more generic audio purpose. And it sounds more pro too. Spider and Spider Valve series would be amps for guitars. L2 and L3 series would be PA or Sound reinforcement for a wider range of frequencies (voice, guitar, bass, keyboards and such). You wouldn't use a guitar amp for voice, because a guitar amp is more optimized for guitar and not voice or keyboard frequencies, so those tone colors would sound odd. Speakers are optimized for their specific uses, ie- frequency range and power levels. But filters (tone controls) also are used to zero in on, or open up the optimal use of the amplifier. It's a matter of matching up the elements for your use. Depends on what you are after. The Hollywood Bowl has a PA system (with mixer and amplifiers), members of a band have guitar, bass and keyboard amps.

Yamaha APX-6 electro acoustic guitar repair
psarkissian replied to cathy_ohhh's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Check for Yamaha authorized service and repair in your area. Also, there is Mark Wright Music in Northampton. He knows his stuff, and is good with guitars. He was my opposite number at Line 6, UK, When we had a location there. -

I don't know that. I fix the gear. The person you've been on the ticket with will set that up. That would be worked out with him. I've made him aware that I want the whole set-up from to the 500X. I know what's wrong from listening to the audio clip,... I just have to isolate which device in the signal chain. -

I should get the whole set-up, so that I can isolate the problem. I can be the guitar, VDI cable, 500X or a combination of them. The whole set-up will all come to my bench. -

"Are you in Calabasas?"--- Yes. We've seen the tickets. -
1) 89/89F are more like the Ibanez, while the 69/69S are more like Strat necks. Yes, more than likely some re-drill with 3rd party necks. 2) Interesting that you mention Third Eye Blind,... I've serviced Kevin Cadogan's JTV-69 a couple of times. It has a third party neck, and he did a number of user saved Models using those odd custom tunings. There are a standard set of Alt Tunings, but there is also the Workbench HD that allows you to do and save custom patches. It's a bit of work, but he likes the results. As far as which is better, the question is,... which is better for you. Play one, spend time with it, get the feel of it. A guitar is a personal thing that speaks to your musical identity. 3) With Workbench HD, choose your body, pick-ups, hope the pick-ups are oriented polarity wise to one another, string gain and detune,... etc. 4) 89/89F are more like the Ibanez, while the 69/69S are more like Strat.

I hope they are EH brand EL84's. These amps are not forgiving of modifications. They might come highly recommended for general use, but are they, when it comes to a DT amp? These are hybrid amps (analog and digital sections), so you can't do tube swaps like we use to do in the 1960's and 70's, on an all analog tube amp.

The reason for using a VDI is for the connectors, as they lock snug. Standard CAT5 can jiggle causing intermittencies and transients on the supply line. CAT5e, CAT6,CAT7 are for a different and of data rate/frequencies, bringing you outside the optimum data rate for Line 6 devices. -

The ground hum at the beginning of the sound clip and the way the pops and clicks occur, I need the whole set-up on my bench,... the guitar, the VDI cable, the 500X, et al. Log a Support ticket. -
Don't use it. The two voltages won't be compatible,... go passive not active. And there isn't enough space in the cavity for that and the JTV electronics. If the pick-ups by themselves have a bulk resistance between 6k to 8k-Ohm, then it's possible to insert them into the existing JTV circuitry. You'd be better off just going with custom wound Seymour Duncan pick-ups like Oz Noy did. Has a nice bite to it when in magnetic mode. One other thing, any mods that alter the functionality of Line 6 guitars, will void any warranties. String tree retainers and strap locks are not a big deal. Just don't use too long a screw on the strap locks, a number of people have shorted out their electronics and voided their warranty doing that,... and I had to deal with results. Not a good thing. Be very careful with mods. Line 6 does not endorse mods, and especially ones that alter the function of the instrument. I'm here to give you all friendly advise regarding this.

Yeah, sucks. Take them back, see if they'll exchange it or something. Not having a matched set would be too unstable, like running a hot rod car at near red line,... with a mal-adjusted timing belt.
-
Matched set is a must. And be certain you have a stable AC main voltage when doing bias on a tube amp. 10mV difference is a bit too much. From the Knowledge Base--- DT25 bias is 25 mV +/- 3 mV.
-
Are you using the specified Electro-Harmonix versions of the tubes? It's not an all analog tube amp, so using the specified tubes are recommended. Also check with the Knowledge Base here on the Forum regarding bias voltages.
