Using only piezo without modelling?
psarkissian replied to Dshow's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
"Who said it was illegal? As long as you don't sell it or give it to anyone else, you can do what you like. The posting of the modified software, not that would be illegal due to copyright restrictions"--- That may be so,... but there may also be "industrial espionage" aspects to consider. In 2003, the industrial espionage act here in America was overhauled, as a "strategic imperative", in response to the "war on terrorism". Breaking into someone's software might be considered an act of industrial espionage, and may be subject to prosecution and especially some very hefty monetary damages. These are criminal penalties as well that goes way beyond the civil penalties of Copyright infringement. People in Holland, Germany and the UK have gotten into trouble over this sort of thing, so being outside the USA doesn't leave them immune,.... especially in those countries that are signatories of IP (copyrights and patents) treaties. I read about the industrial espionage act overhaul and update in an article in one of the publications of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Please,... be careful of what lines you cross. I don't want to see anyone get into trouble over stuff like this, it's not worth it. It's about the rock-n-roll, it's about the music. -
Changing Bridge Pickup in JTV 89F
psarkissian replied to schontone's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
It's more about how pick-ups wire into the JTV, and not so much about wiring in a particular brand. Too many wiring variables from brand to brand. Dan Erlewine may have something on his website or his book on guitar repair. There's a chapter on pick-up wiring. It's very well put together. Find the pick-up you want and then find the equivalent wiring diagram in Dan's book. -
Changing Bridge Pickup in JTV 89F
psarkissian replied to schontone's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Check the the Line 6 Knowledge Base. I think the pick-up specs were meant to be similar to one of the SD humbuckers, I don't recall which one. If you go with the SD, be aware that the pick-up height adjustment will be different. Magnetic field pull down on the strings, can cause warbling in the signal when in Model mode. Even if the pick-ups are not engaged, the magnetic field doesn't go away. So pick-up height adjustment is essential to prevent warbling. Be aware that functional changes may affect or void any warranties. -
Using only piezo without modelling?
psarkissian replied to Dshow's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Engaging the Models, engages the piezos. That's how it was designed. Somewhere in Custom 1, Alt Tune = Model, is a Model of the JTV itself. I forget which one, I don't use it much, but it's a way of using the piezos and sound like the JTV itself. -
Not just the power tubes. And yes,... the Electro-Harmonix version is best suited and best matched. I see too many come across my bench because of tube substitutes. These aren't the same "all analog" tube amps we used to use in the 1960's and 70's. And before someone says that EH tubes are nothing more than Sovtek tubes with EH painted on it. I should remind people that Electro-Harmonix owns the Sovtek factory. The EH's get some extra testing and scrutiny than the usual Sovtek. A weekend rock warrior can get away with 24-months between tube swaps. The caveat being that it also matters how hard you push it as well. So bare that in mind.
-
Also,... When was the last time you had the tubes changed out? They should be changed out every 12-18 months if you're a gigging musician, every 20-24 months if you're a weekend rock warrior. Use the specified stock tubes, no substitutes.

Take it to a Line 6 authorized service center, and when he has it on his bench, have him get in touch with me through Custom Support.
-
TrintyPC,... I would recommend registering your product and creating an account, so that you can log a ticket with Custom Support, and explain the situation to them so they can help you with that.

JTV-59 with a GK-3
psarkissian replied to GordenMack's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
What snhirsch said. Do you have a link to that photo? Also GordenMack, be aware that if your JTV is under warranty, any function modification would void that warranty. A number of things can go wrong. Some of it my be easy to do, but it can also be easy to mess up. Please tread carefully. -
The 99-065-0005 on the Full Compass site is the latest interface hardware. JTV guitar firmware version 2.00 or greater is compatible with Workbench HD, while firmware prior to that is compatible with the earlier Workbench. There's an assortment of JTV guitar information here on the Line 6 Knowledge Base.

Oh, and plastic safe contact cleaner,.... couldn't hurt. Carefully pull the Volume and Tone control knobs up and off, put some plastic safe contact cleaner on a cotton swab, let a drop or two drip go down the shaft into the inner workings. Turn the pots back and forth a few times to work it in. Couple drops to each shaft is all it needs.
-
cruisinon2,... normally I would agree with you. But in this case, if he is able to rock it back and forth, then there is something else going on that contact cleaner won't fix. Sounds like loose hardware contributing to an intermittent chassis ground. I've seen this malady and dealt with it before, that's why I know. Otherwise,... good call, would've been might first suspicion too.
-
Intermittent contact internally to the circuitry. Rocking the knob back and forth will just loosen the chassis ground contact, adding to the intermittent and crackling. It could be as simple as a loose retainer nut under the control knobs, or something more deep in the circuitry that has to be troubleshooted by an Line 6 authorized technician in your area. Go into your Line 6 account, make sure your device is registered and log a ticket.
-
Probably an impedance mis-match between the laptop and the CD/MP3 input. More than likely a component on the input board. It is repairable. Go into the ticketing system into your account and log a ticket, and see about getting a return authorization.

"I wouldn't expect an official "thumbs up" from L6. As far as they're concerned, mere mortals should never attempt such things."---- On the contrary, being something of a custom tweaker myself during the last four decades, I get it. But, as a Line 6 person, I need to make people aware of some things. Do your homework, know what it is you're getting into. There are differing levels of knowledge and skill here. Need to make sure everyone is aware of what they are getting into,... and I don't want anyone needlessly voiding their warranties, because of altering some functionality. For those who don't care about warranties,... as a guitar tweaker, all I can do is wish you luck. "Can't imagine there will be any addition pull from the P-Rails compared to the original humbuckers in the JTV-89. Unless I'm missing something?"---- The specs of pick-ups between companies may not be the same, spot-on to a gnats behind. Seymour's specs might not be the same as our specs,... so just be aware of that when adjusting pick-up height. It's a different kind of cat, you have to cuddle it under the chin a little differently.

JTV 59 Bridge Saddles Pull Forward
psarkissian replied to kckobe's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
It could be one of four reasons. Best bet is to log a ticket in the system, it will have to be serviced. -
Pick-up height from pole piece to the strings will be a factor. Magnetic pull on the strings will induce warbling effect into the audio when in Model mode using the piezos. The pick-ups are turned off in Model mode, but the magnetic pull will still be there. Being in Liverpool, you may want to seek out Tim Morgan, Shane Blower or Mark Wright, in the midlands (in the Northampton and Warickeshire areas), and pick their brains on this. They are the chaps who used to do guitars at Line 6 Rugby, UK, before it closed. They know their stuff.
-
It will be more about the resonant or damping qualities of how the nut affects the overall sound, and less about the name of the brand. Do the homework for something that works and gives you what you're looking for out of it,... and with the correct string spacing. And remember, Line 6 doesn't support mods that affect the functionality of the product. And that such mods would void the warranty.
