  1. Hi there, I have always wanted a Variax, but because I am left handed I could never get the newer ones. I see the older Variax 500 was in lefty, but they are pretty rare and go for high prices. So I decided to buy a brand new one and do it myself. It's not that hard, I promise and I am no luthier. You will probably void your warranty so do this at your own risk! 1. Remove all the strings. 2. Remove old nut by using a small block of square wood and gently tap (and I mean gently) the block of wood with a mallet. Tap in the direction of the bridge or neck to loosen the glue. And then tap it on the side to slide with a blunt screwdriver, out of the slot. Mine came out really easy and only had a drop of glue in two spots. 3. Replace old nut with the Graphtech TUSQ-XL nut, PQL-5000-L0. This is a lefty nut and is pretty close to the original. Graphtech actually supply the nut for the JTV-69 as standard, but they don't have an exact lefty copy. I sanded mine for about 10 seconds with fine paper to reduce the thickness ever so slightly and then pressed in the new nut. Sand a little, then test. It was a snug fit and didn't bother glueing. 4. Measure the saddles on the bridge (from the rear most straight edge of the bridge to the leading edge of the saddle) and write down each length according to the right handed string setup. You will then reverse all the saddle lengths by screwing them in or out according to what you have written down, with the left handed string layout. 5. Remove the cover on the back of the JTV-69 closest to the bottom. This houses the Variax motherboard. Locate the two grey wires with single white connector attached. This goes back to the bridge piezo pickups. Remove the connector. You will now need to flip the connector around so as to flip the piezos for the lefty string layout. When you plug it back you will notice that the connector doesnt quite align and fit. You will need to cut off a bit of the plastic on the motherboard part of the connector to make it fit. Its not as bad as it sounds. I then secured the plug with a bit of tape. 6. Restring the guitar as lefty, adjust the saddle heights if necessary and re-intonate. But you should be pretty close with the saddle lengths from the previous measurement. 7. Profit $$$! Only downside to this is that its a "Jimi'd" guitar and a bit difficult to reach past the 20th fret. But it plays just like a normal guitar. I dont use a tremelo so have tightened up the springs to make it as hard tail as possible.
  2. My JTV-69's middle pickup has quit working. :( I opened her up to see if there was a loose wire that had become disconnected, but couldn't see any problem. Has anyone else experienced this or a similar problem with your magnetic pickups?
  3. I recently bought a used JTV-69 from a studio that used it for 1 session (great deal). Took it to my tech for a setup and I noticed my g string sounds dull. Doesn't ring clear like the rest. Doesn't appear to be a nut issue as the fretted notes do it too. Also, sounds dull without being plugged in. Changed strings twice..tried 010's and 009's. Anyone out there have this issue? Maybe a saddle issue? thx guys
  4. I bought a JTV-69 several months ago and have grown to like the feel of the guitar as a plain guitar and I like the sound of the regular pickups. But on the modeling side of the guitar, I loaded some presets that Variax user and for whatever reason, the patches altered the sustain and output to a considerable extent. So much so that I could no longer use the guitar for gigging, which was the primary purpose for me buying it in the first place. So, I tried multiple times to follow the instructions to reset the Variax to factory settings but each time I would do the procedure, instead of getting a flashing red light, I got a flashing white light and no discernable change was noticed. Has anyone else experienced this behavior? If so, were you able to resolve it and what were the steps you took?
  5. Hi All, I've a nice black JTV69, I bought it in 2011. Since then I use it almost every day. However I noticed that after some tremolo usage the guitar goes out of tune all the time. During the last string change I checked the tremolo bridge and I noticed that the knife edges seems to be really used. I took some pictures, please check them: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1AXxGWGxaZdf9hsxSTbhWW_76lOyLjxGO The problem is that, I really don't know what should I do now, because this type of bridge is very special and I cannot buy a new one in the local music stores. I found one on fullcompass but its quite expensive and I really don't need new saddles and tremolo block etc. Only the bridge plate with the kinfe edges. Have you got any idea how should I repair it? Have you got any experience about bad/used kinfe edges on JTV69 guitars? Thank you in advance! Norbert
  6. I have a JTV-69 guitar. I would really like to change multiple JTV-69 settings with simple single button pushes. ----- For instance, with one button push, I would like to go from a 2nd pickup switch position Acoustic 1970 Martin D12-28 (a 12-string guitar) to a Lester 5th position pickup switch position (1959 Gibson Les Paul, neck pickup). Then with another single button push, I want to return back to the 70 Martin 12-string. ----- To achieve my desire, is there any Helix guitar multi-effects unit which will, with single button pushes active, change, readjust, etc. & subsequently return back the JTV-69's settings of the: [a] Guitar Model Selector, Guitar Tuning Knob, [c] Pickup Selector Switch, &/or [d] any other JTV-69 setting? Thanks, for the info. Richard, richardcuccia@hotmail.com
  7. Just purchased a JVT- 69 and noticed when using the mag pickups the 5 way toggle switch works perfect but when I switch to the virtual instruments position 2 and 4 don't work right. In either position the instrument is intermittent. I have to hold the switch a little out of that location to get it to work and then when I let go, it goes back to the instrument on either side of that position even though it is still in position 2 or 4. I updated to the latest firmware and It seemed like it got worse. Has anyone else had this issue. It currently renders the virtual Side of the instrument almost unusable. I have not found anything on this issue other that one other guy made a video on YouTube and his was really bad (hence his cursing in the background).
  8. Hi all, I just bought a used JTV-69, and there are a couple of issues I thought I could ask about here. First, the volume and tone knobs are reversed, i.e. the volume is controlled by the one closest to the jack, and tone is the one closest to the strings. This is opposite of what it should be right? At first I thought it was possibly something that could be changed in software, but I can't find anything like that. I guess the previous owner modified it. The other issue is probably related... the tone knob only works on the modeled sounds. It doesn't have any effect on the mag pickups. Should that be an easy fix? Thanks for your help!
  9. Hi, I've scoured the forums on this and I can't seem to find all the answers to my questions. I'm interested in doing a neck transplant for my JTV-69, its one of the earliest stock of the korean versions so it does have some issues with the neck. Its now out of warranty, so I am looking to make some improvements to the hardware but I don't want to effect the technology. I'm looking to replace with a standard fender neck but the ones I can find on ebay in the UK (which are sparse as I don't want to spend 000s on a new neck. One replacement neck I am looking at now has 21 frets whereas the standard neck on the 69 has 22. Does anyone know if you can transplant a 21 fret neck onto the jtv-69? Also I am interested in turning my HSS into an SSS, probably replacing all the pickups, if anyone has had any experience of this I would love to hear it. Thanks in advance. Chris
  10. I've had a pair of Variax 300's for quite sometime now. They have served me well, but they can be a little............ temperamental? I never liked the feel of the necks, so a few years back I put a Variax 500 neck (ebay) on one of them. Slight mod a neck joint, but it worked out great, Last year I found another 500 neck on ebay, got it changed the second one. My question, I want to get a JV series. I don't mind either style ( 59 vs 69 ), but would like to know which neck is closer to the 500 neck. If there is a significant weight difference, I may have to consider that as well. Thanks for any info you can share. Al

  12. Using my less than a month old JTV-69 the other day through the magnetic pickups, without modeling, I noticed that all the treble was gone. Turned on modelling to Lester and sound was great. All modeled tones sound great, but magnetics sounded dead. When I remove and re-insert the TRS cable to restart the guitar, the treble would temporarily return to the mags, but would fade after a few seconds. I called Line 6 and they had no clue. I called a local guy and he asked how I was connected. That was when I remembered the night before I was using without the AB box and the mags sounded fine. Over the last couple of days, when using without the AB box mags are fine, but with the XPS, they are dead. I have replaced the TRS cable on the XPS and tried it with and wothout the XLR connected, same result. Any one else using the XPS box experience such a thing? I am wondering if replacing the box will fix or if the box is only meant to be used for modeling tones only??
  13. Hi, has anyone done the treble bleed mod on your Variax guitar. I use the Variax with the real pickups all the time and one thing that I don't like is how the volume reacts when rolling down. I have done the treble bleed on my Strat and I guess I'm used to it so much that I can't live without it. So I'm considering doing it on the Variax too. Any experiences? Thanks
  14. I have an "open box" JTV-69 on the way, but it doesn't include the USB interface. Does anyone know if this version work with it? http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Workbench
  15. I searched the forum (also through Google) with a few search terms, a few times, but no relevant topic found. All latest SW/FW. Workbench HD v2.12.0 JTV-89F (v2.21 [shipped with v2.10]) through USB (v1.0.7.2) connected with Windows 7 (SP1) i7 64bit laptop (directly, no hub inbetween). Is there any exclusive Models/Patches that are for the JTV-89F guitars that I can't use because of this partial detection? Although Line 6 Monkey v1.71 detected it as a general "Tyler Variax" and the flashing (EDIT3: with a correct file, manually downloaded) worked fine. But I imagine that process is meant to be compatible with as many as possible. From the download section: "The five high-gain models that were previously exclusive to JTV-89 and loaded into custom bank 1 are now available in the Workbench software by loading the custom JTV bank available online." EDIT4: Although it was preceded by: "For JTV-89 Customers Only: " which seems to contradict the buildup of the sentence that followed it with "previously exclusive". Is it exclusive or not? Does it include JTV-89F? Other Variax models? Unclear. Confusing. But more importantly, where and how exactly is it usable? Nothing in the Workbench HD manual about "online". I must be missing something.. EDIT1: is the following the only (official?) trusted resource? Share And Download 2.0+ H D Models? EDIT2: I'm also interested in Bass (HD) Models compatible with JTV-89F, any good direction in this regard would prevent me from doing something stupid to the guitar. EDIT4: Other than this issue, in my bit of experience with the guitar, everything else seems alright, and I mostly enjoy it. It wasn't tuned fully when it arrived, but that does not invoke concern. This issue does. I wanted to try to get any clarification or specific tips here before resorting to opening a support ticket. Thanks in advance. EDIT4 includes overall adjustments. EDIT5(2015-09-01): added Dropbox-hosted screen-snippets for public-viewing (it should detect as JTV-89 [normal also for the JTV-89F, not -69 [never had the -69 guitar]):
  16. If I had all the guts for a JTV 69, is it possible to connect the "model selector knob" from a JTV-59 to that circuit board? Also, does anyone have pictures of what it looks like under the pick guard of the JTV-69?
  17. I was just poking around at www.fullcompass.com and saw they have the maple neck for the JTV-69 (or 69S) available for order - http://www.fullcompass.com/product/444864.html I know a lot of you have swapped to other necks of your liking -- Mighty Mites, Warmoth, etc., because you just can't stand the 69 neck. I really don't have a problem with my 69S's neck, and I have big hands... I haven't had the string falling off the neck issues either. My Gold 69S has the rosewood fingerboard, and I like it -- the dark fingerboard against the gold of the guitar body is pleasing, but damn.... I have maple neck/fingerboard on my 1973 Tele Deluxe and my late 70's Strat -- I like both of those.... Just thought I'd throw it out there. Haven't seen it brought up on the forum, so far... I poke around at that site from time to time because what they have available changes from time to time. Dave
  18. I am selling my beautiful black JTV-69S. I love the smooth tremelo, the comfortable play-ability and, of course, the awesome Variax tones! I also have a JTV-59 that just seems like a better fit for me, so I've decided to sell the 69S. Please see the attached photos of the actual guitar for sale and take a minute to view the listing over at reverb.com: https://reverb.com/item/581960-line-6-jtv-69s-james-tyler-variax-sss-black PM me if you have any questions or need more details - thanks!

  20. I remember browsing this forum a while ago, reading of an alternative to the tremol-no. Does anyone know what that is? Is there a reason why you prefer that over the tremel-no? I've been noticing that my 69's modelling (especially with the Twang and Spank) has been "plunk"-y in comparison to the magnetic pickups and my experience with single-coil guitars. I've been wondering if the floating nature of my setup is contributing to that sound. The "plunk"-yness is especially noticeable with the lower E and A strings. I was hoping a system like the tremol-no can "block" the trem and give me a livelier response on-demand (obviously, giving up the use of the trem arm). I should also mention that my guitar has a maple fingerboard, so the all-maple-ness could contribute to the softer response of the lower strings. Regardless, the 69 is an outstanding super-strat guitar. Using the non-locking-nut tremolo is as good as it gets for me: smooth action and doesn't go out of tune. It really makes playing with the acoustic models really, really fun. This guitar was my first foray into trem guitars, and I'm very happy this trem system has given me zero headaches so far!
  21. I tried to update to firmware v2.0 using Monkey. The update threw the following error: Tyler Variax update failed. (Code 80009000) Unknown MIDI Error After pulling and replacing the 1/4 connector on the guitar to reboot it and restarting Monkey, it showed that the firmware was at 2.0 -- but ALL OF THE MODELS ARE GONE, GONE, GONE... I tried rolling back to v1.71 but it ALSO terminated with the same error message, same result - NO MODELS and it also SAYS it's back at v1.3, NOT 1.71 as when it was delivered! THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR!!! PLEASE PROVIDE A FIX IMMEDIATELY OR THIS GUITAR WILL BE RETURNED!!!! I also logged this problem this morning as: "Download From Guitar Clobbering Workbench Hd Settings"
  22. I noticed that the black JTV-69 is cheaper then the white/blue/red models. I can understand why the 3 tone burst finish is more money, but not why the other color models are higher cost. Are they the same except for the color? thanks, mark
  23. Writing here to vent a bit. I purchased a new JTV-69 in November 2013 from American Musical Supply. The guitar has had issues from the beginning: first, the instrument select control knob would not easily engage. When I asked Customer Support about it that indicated that they were aware that sometimes the knob is seated too deeply and for me to place a spacer under the knob to allow additional clearance. The biggest issue remains with the saddle. I have had two different luthiers attempt to set-up this guitar (factory set-up was rough), both luthiers indicated there was a serious issue with the saddle. I drove the two hours to an Authorized Warranty Repair Center (Wizard Electronics) in Atlanta and dropped off the guitar about 6-weeks ago. According to Wizard, Line 6 is not authorizing a replacement saddle and instructed Wizard to contact "the guitar guy" at Line 6 to asset them in "tweaking" the problem. They have been waiting for this bozo to contact them - and have tried repeatedly (with me on a conference call with them) with no success. I basically have a $1200.00 brick that I cannot gig with, record with, or use for anything but firewood. I gig over 100 times a year and come in contact with a ton of musicians who have asked about the JTV-69. Up until this point I have held my tongue about the Customer Service issues - no longer. I am going to make it my mission in life to let them know to buy ANYTHING other than this guitar. The technology is great, how they take care of the customer is not. Scott
  24. Hey guys, Check out this recording I did today using the HD500x, JTV-69, and Variax 700 bass with Addictive Drums 2. Tell me what you think. Thanks. https://soundcloud.com/chris-arnold/song-idea-762014
