"Sewer of Wasted Time". I like it!

Correct. So it is, as it always has been. There's no cure for a bad FOH engineer. Unless you can fire him. Yes.

I can only think of one reason to scratch a serial number off anything. Two if it's a gun.....

Are you using a STEREO FX Loop? Are you using an INSERT cable (1/4" TRS> Dual 1/4" TS)? Have you tested the cable? If you take one of the pedals completely out of the chain, do you get stereo? Again with the other? Are you using only stereo FX after the loop? Is there a split in the chain (for the dual amps maybe)? Have you checked the MIX Block Pan/Level settings? As for the level drop, are the Level settings in the Timeline/Tempus OK? I don't recall the specifics offhand, but I seem to remember that there was something strange about the way the Tempus does things. Also, the FX Loop Block has SEND and RETURN levels to accommodate such problems. That's all I can think of right now.

The Powercabs are tuned to sound best for guitar. That they CAN be used as mix monitors is nice, but they're far from optimum for that purpose. Others have mentioned the TS 312. Though they're virtually the same as the FRFR112, the two speakers sound very different. And though they're ALL marketed as FRFR, My PC212 sounds totally different than my FRFR112, and neither sounds even close to My Studio Monitors. Different tools for different applications, but all FRFR. That's what I mean by "meaningless".

There's EQ adjustments everywhere in the Helix signal chain, from your first OD to Global EQ at the end. You might want to take a deep dive into EQ usage by reading some of the hundreds (thousands?) of articles on the subject that are available on the internet.

Cables - HX Stomp into Audio Interface [Focusrite Clarett 2pre]
rd2rk replied to nickpeacock's topic in Helix
Depending on the electrical environment, you MIGHT hear added noise with TS>TS, especially if the cable run is over 20ft. Otherwise, TS>TS is just fine, assuming quality cables. The main difference with TRS>TRS will be in your wallet. Short runs are OK, but for longer runs, XLR is cheaper.- 1 reply

Is tuner output set to MUTE?

Have you got the noise gate on?

The problem with using the BIG KNOB for on-the-fly- volume changes is that the level at the Powercab's INPUT is what you're using the LED to set. It also affects the XLR Out level if that's what you're using for FOH. That will make your sound guy unhappy. Run a MIDI cable to the Powercab. In CommandCenter, set one of your Expression Pedals to send CC#7. That will control the Powercab Output same as turning the Powercab Volume knob, and no affect on FOH from the XLRs.

You can have two independent MONO FX Loops or one STEREO FX Loop. To set up independent MONO FX Loops, get an "INSERT" cable - 1/4" TRS>Dual 1/4" TS. TIP is FX Loop L; RING is FX Loop R. The RETURNS L/Mono and Right are for the corresponding loops. The corresponding Blocks are FX Loop L and FX Loop R. If you want the return to be somewhere else in the signal chain (parallel routing) you can use the separate SEND/RETURN Blocks, but keep in mind you've only got 8 blocks to play with, and there's a slight latency caused by the DA conversion (SEND) and the AD conversion (RETURN). It's not really noticeable (<>2-3ms RT) when used as a Loop, but with parallel routing MIGHT be noticeable, depending on the FX used.
-
If you don't need the FX Loop Switching functions, there's no reason you can't put any FX you like in a single physical loop and place that on FX Loop R. If you can find FX that themselves can be controlled by MIDI, You don't need a switcher, except for fancy loop placements within the HXSXL FX Loop. If ALL your effects were MIDI controllable (Strymon?), you wouldn't even need the MEG, except for fancy loop placements within the HXSXL FX Loop.. How much do you REALLY NEED fancy loop placements within the HXSXL FX Loop? Do you need it in BOTH loops? How much $$$ are you willing to spend? As for a smaller, cheaper version of the MEG, I know of none. The Boss ES-5 is like the MEG (single loop), but not much less than another MEG ($425 vs $499) The Boss ES-8 is very similar to the full size Effects Gizmo, and $750. A little cheaper (vs $900) than the full size Effect Gizmo, and has the two loops you need to do what you can't do with the single loop MEG. There may be cheaper things out there, and there's always the used market.

AFAIK, that'll make it sound weird, but won't cause damage. You can get an in-line Phantom power blocker to prevent that in the future. If the screen is still black after a couple of reboots, use HX Edit to do a backup, then do a Factory Reset by booting while holding FS 9+10. If that doesn't fix it, call support!

All of the audio devices should be running from the same electrical source (to eliminate ground loops). The FX loop does add a small bit of noise. It's NBD with my Tweaker, but that's not a high gain amp. You could try lowering the SEND level (might have to increase the Output level of prior FX), or use a "hum buster" type of device between the SEND and Amp Input. That worked for me (the hum buster) with an Engl that I had.

HX EffectsEVH 5150 III Green and Blue channel volume difference
rd2rk replied to scottlbowen's topic in Helix
Page 26 of the manual (rev C) - FX Loop Settings: Page Knob Parameter Description 1 Send Adjusts the level sent to your external device. 2 Return Adjusts the level received at the Return jack. Use the Return level to adjust the level being returned from the amp's preamp section (green/blue). You can also do this in a single preset by assigning that level to Snaphot control, and using a Command Center Instant Command to send the MIDI message for the Channel change on the amp. -
HX EffectsEVH 5150 III Green and Blue channel volume difference
rd2rk replied to scottlbowen's topic in Helix
I don't have HXFX, I have HXS and Floor, thus the following questions: You're using separate presets for each channel? How are you wired? If 4cm with the FX Loop, can you use the Return Level? Mixer Block Output? Gain Block? If using IN/OUT, is there a level control on the Output? -
Right click the TWIN HARMONY Block. Click on Snapshot Bypass (checkmark appears). Now it'll work like the Dhyana Drive Block. Don't forget to SAVE! The default when you load any effect is SNAPSHOT BYPASS selected (checked). If you saved TWIN HARMONY as a FAVORITE with SNAPSHOT BYPASS unchecked, and/or you're copy/pasting it between presets with SNAPSHOT BYPASS unchecked, it will remain unchecked. Interesting anomaly - if you've saved it unchecked as a favorite, and you DRAG/DROP it into the signal chain, SNAPSHOT BYPASS will be checked, but NOT if you COPY/PASTE from favorites. Weird.
-
I can't duplicate the problem. When you add an effect. it's ON by default in all Snapshots. You have to turn it OFF manually in each Snapshot, then SAVE the Snapshot. Unless SNAPSHOT BYPASS is unchecked for a Block, even if you change it's saved setting in a Snapshot, changing Snapshots should reflect it's saved setting in that Snapshot. If you have Snapshot Edits (Global Settings) set to RECALL, and you change the Bypass status in a Snapshot, then change Snapshots, when you go back to that Snapshot it will still be changed. Unless you SAVE the Preset, when you change presets the change reverts to the last SAVED setting. The usual questions - are you on FW v3.11 and HX Edit v3.11? They have to match. If YES, then attach a copy of the offending Preset and I'll test it on my Helix.

@lou-kash - You can do it with the stomp, but NOT with the Mini Gizmo. He needs the the full size Gizmo. @jcshirke - Go to the RJM website and read BOTH manuals. They have wiring diagrams which will make it obvious why you need the BIG Gizmo, not the MINI Gizmo.
-
Had a quick look at this product line and their manuals. AFAICT, to do what you want requires the full size Gizmo. The Mini is designed to be used with a single amp/FX Loop. The full size number is designed to be used with one or two amps/FX Loops.
-
Yes, that is curious. I'll have to pay more attention to what a given hi gain preset sounds like when I first turn on the unit vs later.
-
It's as close as you can get with Helix, but not the same. IDK, I never thought of DG's or JS's sound as muddy, LIVE or recorded! Like I said though, LOTS of ways to skin this cat. Have fun experimenting!
-
It occurs to me that I have a similar (not the same) noise with the hi gain amps, but not the clean amps, unless I add an OD/Dist/Fuzz. I never worried about it because real amps ITRW do the same thing. Could that be what you're experiencing, exacerbated by whatever MOD effect you're using in the audio sample? How was that recorded?
-
Not likely. There's a vent on the bottom, is it sitting on a carpet? If it's very dusty up there, it may have sucked up a bunch of dust?
