It was creative combinations of "bread and butter" effects that created the off the wall and ambient sounds of the past, and is still what drives creativity in the modern boutique pedal world. L6 has recently completed some changes to the core programming which they promise will bring us much sonic joy in the future. They've also hired some people (I hear) to step up development in the area of polyphonic effects. However, stuff like this takes time to get right, and no doubt the fires will add further delays. If 45 days is all you've got, then we'll all be sorry to see you go :-( . But you'll likely be missing out on a lot!

No definitive detailed listing that I know of. Factory presets change slightly with each update. I have a setlist of MY PRESETS. Copy/Paste the preset I want to mod, then do it there.

Helix Floor, 2.7 - that appears to be the way it works.

If you think about it, makes perfect sense. After all, it's a proven fact that if the moon rises at 11:38 AM in Trenton NJ, then the square root of an elephant MUST be > a yam's shoe!

Using one foot switch to turn one effect on & another one off
rd2rk replied to MikeTicehurst's topic in Helix
What codamedia said. The scribble strip will say multiple. To rename it, TOUCH the button, select Customize on the screen, and enter the new name (by default the screen will say one or another of the assigned effects, not what the scribble strip says). -
With pedal Heel Down and effect OFF, assign bypass. OR With pedal Toe Down and effect ON, assign bypass. Works either way.

As long as you know that you'll always be using your amp's preamp, no Helix preamp is required. Just be sure that if you're using physical FX Loop1, you use the FX Loop1 Block. If you're wired per your diagram - Guitar>HX Input>HX Send#>Amp Input>Amp FX Send>HX Return#>HX 1/4" L/Mono Out>Amp FX Return - you should be good. EDIT: the big knob on the Helix will control the level sent to the amp's FX Return. If you set it full up or set it to XLR in Globals, it'll send a 0db level.
-
You need to put a FX LOOP Block between the front of amp FX and delays etc.. Your wiring is good. Guitar>Input>Distortion>FX LOOP Block>Preamp>Delay>Output Then assign the FX LOOP Block and Preamp to a single button, saved one ON one OFF so that they toggle ON/OFF>OFF/ON. With the FX LOOP ON the signal goes though the Orange Preamp (Helix Preamp OFF), when the FX LOOP is OFF the signal skips the Orange Preamp, goes through the Helix Preamp and out to the Orange RETURN/POWER AMP.

Unfortunately, while you can stop automatic PC Sends, there's no way to stop the CC sends from the Looper. MIDI Solutions sells a programmable device called the "Event Processor" that can be programmed to filter or transform most types of MIDI. Downside is it's $150! EDIT: If you set the Helix BASE Channel to a different channel from the one that you're transmitting to your amp on, that might do it. Like, if your amp listens on Channel 1, set the Helix BASE Channel to Channel 2. Might work!
-
And I repeat, your comment is nonsense. It does EXACTLY what it claims to do, for most everybody else who uses it for MIDI. Just because it doesn't do exactly what YOU "hoped" it would do, that does not make it "junk". Maybe you got a defective unit, support might be able to sort that out.

Yes. If you're using the full Helix, see page 57 of the manual. If you're using the HX Stomp, see page 48 of that manual. If you're using HX FX, see page 42 of that manual.
-
The full Helix has 4 loops. In addition, it DOES send CC#s as well as PC#s, AND you can disable the automatic PC# send in favor of sending specific PC#s as required using Instant Commands. Because of these added functions in the full sized Helix (as well as having more buttons and more snapshots), setting up the full Helix to control the dpc8ez with snapshots was simple, the only restrictions being the requirement to use the auto PC send method and, since there's only 6 Instant Commands available, you're limited to controlling 6 of the 8 loops in the dpc8ez. When you upgrade to the full Helix, let me know and I'll send you a preset that demonstrates the method. As for design considerations, a Fiat is a good car, but it is NOT a Ferrari! It's a simple case of having the right tool for the job (and being able to pay for it)! I suspect that in the future, the HX Stomp will get improvements to it's MIDI capabilities. Maybe even more snapshots. However, the # of physical loops will stay the same (you only NEED 1 for your application), and you'll always be limited (for your purposes) by the smaller # of buttons available in a device with that small a footprint.
-
I own neither a dpc8ez or HX Stomp, so what I'm about to say is strictly from my reading of the manuals. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. Assuming that I correctly understand your requirement: As near as I can tell, the HX Stomp will send PC messages, but NOT CC messages. Your dpc8ez Loops' ON/OFF status is controlled using CC messages, so using Snapshots for this won't work (piece of cake to set up on my Helix Floor). The only way I can see to make it work would be to have your Loops set up in dpc8ez presets, whose PC#s correspond to your HX Stomp Preset #s. With GLOBAL/MIDI/MIDI PC TX set ON, when you select a HX Stomp preset, it's corresponding PC# will be sent to the dpc8ez. On the full size Helix, switching presets can cause an audio lag/drop. Depending on how you're using it, this could be a problem. However, I suspect that the time it takes to switch presets/loops on your dpc8ez will also cause a lag, so that lag could be inevitable whether using snapshots or presets.

Ok, gotcha! I'd like you to do me (and everybody else who might come here for information) a favor. I don't know why you can't get it to work in your application, but it works for me, and for MANY others who use it. Maybe it doesn't work in exactly the way you say you want to use it, but in normal usage for most people, it works. I've helped lots of people get it working, both on this forum and elsewhere, with all sorts of hardware and software configurations, so please, don't go around saying that "the Helix is junk - as far as being an audio/MIDI interface". That's nonsense, in the truest meaning of that word. Thanks, and Best of luck to you in your musical endeavors.

Like I said, I can duplicate your problem in MIDIOX - yet, in real world application, it works! Try it in Ableton, with an actual VST. I mentioned Sonar and Reaper, but I also use Ableton and, again, no problems. You've proven (with the Audiobox) that your pedal works. The configuration just LOOKS like it's a problem using MIDIOX. How long does it take to TRY it in Ableton, 10 minutes? Better than simply laying the blame on a piece of equipment that works for countless others! If you can't get it to work in real world application - to an actual VST, then it might be time for a Support ticket. As to what SHOULD just work, in 30 years of working with computers, as a tech, programmer and network admin, I've learned over and over that it's rarely that simple!

You're wrong about that. In addition to my eDrums, I've also run a MIDI enabled synth through it. NO PROBLEMS, as long as the devices are on different MIDI Channels (NOT OMNI) and the Helix is configured as I described. What you're describing is the reason I stopped using MIDIOX. For some reason, a while back one of the W10 updates broke MIDIOX. Apparently, it's also broken on Win8. Pi$$es me off, I've used MIDIOX for YEARS! I've done the usual uninstall/reinstall to no avail. What I do now is to use a VST MIDI Monitor called - get ready - MIDI MONITOR: Great, the web site is down, and this @#$%^ forum won't let me attach it! PM me an email address and I'll send it to you. Are you 32 or 64 bit? It's nowhere near as powerful as MIDIOX, but MIDIOX is obviously broken, and for basic monitoring it gets the job done. I'm not sure how Studio One (I assume that's what you're using with a Presonus, but whatever DAW) works, but in Sonar you put MIDI Monitor in an audio track, then point a MIDI track with it's input set to Helix at it. In Reaper you just put it on a track with a MIDI Input set to Helix. DON'T GIVE UP! IT REALLY DOES WORK! EDIT: That's hysterical! Just for kicks I ran MIDIOX. It's working fine again! Apparently, the problem I had with MIDIOX (which was as you described) was because of the way I had the drumkit wired into the system through the synth. It all works, but for some reason MIDIOX doesn't like it! Sometimes I hate computers! ANYHOW.....setting it up simply - synth on ch1 > Helix on ch2 > USB to computer - MIDIOX tells me that all is well, with both devices sending consistently on their respective channels. That's with MIDI USB and MIDI THRU both ON. The one thing you haven't mentioned - have you actually tried the PK-5A with a synth VST in your DAW? Maybe, as in the case I just described, it actually works, but there's just something about the combination that MIDIOX doesn't like?

Do come back and let us know if there's a resolution. Or if we're BOTH crazy! ;-)

There should be a Input Monitor/Echo switch on the Presonus Helix track. Turn it OFF.

There's definitely something wonky going on with the 3NoteGen. I've tried a dozen different configurations - using multiple 3NG blocks, one block and Snapshots, various configurations of the 3NG blocks.... Some configurations work with the Swell FX, some work sometimes. My favorite so far was when I set up three 3NG blocks, C-E-G, all Osc on each set to the one note (C,E or G), same octave, all Osc settings identical, + AdSwell. All blocks played thru the AdSwell - but which ones played depended on which buttons were pressed AND THE ORDER THEY WERE PRESSED IN! Sometimes none would play, sometimes all, sometime 1 but not 2 and 3, sometimes 2 and 3 but not 1, sometimes 1 and 3...... entirely at random! Sometimes a note would play consistently on consecutive presses, but if you waited a few seconds between presses it wouldn't play. At one point I got frustrated and started rapidly pressing combinations at random and one of the buttons switched itself from Momentary to Latching and got stuck in the ON position. Yet it was still working as Momentary, just backwards! Just for kicks, I set up a preset with only MIDI Notes C-E-G and pointed it at my Synth plugin in Sonar. Ain't got no problems like Helix 3NG can't seem to handle! If you REALLY NEED this function, I suggest you get with Support. I've had my Helix for over 2 years, this is the buggiest thing I've ever seen!

Don't use OMNI, use a specific channel other than the BASE channel. If the PK-5A is on Channel 1, either change it to Channel 2 or change the BASE Channel to Channel 2. Set MIDI over USB ON, MIDI THRU ON.
-
I tried this with the Adriatic Swell, no output problem. The default settings are subtle. Try cranking the feedback, mix, threshold and attack. Of course, I don't know what you're after, and it's not really my thing, but randomly tweaking those settings definitely made a difference, so it's not a "bug". Attached preset.
-
I run the MIDI from my eDrums into the Helix. MIDI over USB ON, MIDI THRU ON. No problems. Are you using your Roland on the same MIDI Channel as the Helix Base Channel? Try changing the Roland to a different channel, could be that there's no MIDI MERGE happening.
-
While that IS the simplest way to change channels, using midi allows for the saving of complete amp presets. More complicated, but much more powerful.
