  1. In the past I've relied on treble bleed to give a crisp rhythm sound when the volume is backed off. That approach lets you dial in a fat lead tone for higher settings without screwing up crunchy rhythms.
  2. I sure wish the Line6 modeling had an option to emulate the effect of the treble-bleed cap.
  3. Amazing after 40 years of rock playing... Even more so after an unfortunate choice of antibiotic by my physician left me with moderate midrange hearing loss and permanent tinnitus! Nice to know these ears have some life left :-)
  4. To my ears, there's a hint of Strat-like "nasal-ness" to the first sample. I was reasonably sure the first clip was a 69 before I even heard the second one. I've always attributed this to the longer scale length.
  5. I'm thinking the first one is the 69. There's something about the longer scale that prevents my ear from "buying" emulation of a shorter-scale instrument. But, I may have just disproved this theory :-)
  6. I called Full Compass Systems yesterday and ordered a couple of transducers. To save time, they suggested a drop ship directly to me from Line6. Full Compass could not have been more helpful and responsive, but the real test is how Line6 handles it on their end.
  7. I will call them tomorrow, but their website says this is a non-stock item. That means they'll first have to get it from Line6. I'm hoping for the best.
  8. The low-E transducer on my 69 went from weak to stone dead during band rehearsal yesterday... I'm hoping that Full Compass can ship these in a reasonably short amount of time. Is there any other source in the US, just in case?
  9. I'm wondering what material the transducers are made from. If they will take solder, one solution would be to run a piece of 30g wirewrap wire to the element as a discrete ground. Anyone tried this?
  10. I figured that would be the case, but it's always good to eliminate mechanical issues.
  11. You haven't mentioned whether the difference is apparent when playing through the mag pickups.
  12. This is odd. My JTV-69 has started showing the same symptoms over the past few weeks. I thought it was my imagination at first, but it's now about half the volume of the A string. These strike me as being very cheap and chintzy transducers. The transducers ARE the saddles!
  13. I would be careful about who you turn a Variax over to for repair. Just because the local tech can solder replacement pickups into your Strat doesn't necessarily mean they have the skill set to handle a JTV.
  14. Have you tried backing off the tone control when set to the acoustic models? It has a very different effect on those than on the electrics. ISTR that it shifts the balance between string vibration vs. body vibration and may help mitigate against the "crispness" you're hearing.
  15. It tracks multiple strings played simultaneously without a hexaphonic pickup? That's some trick.
  16. And as a long-time strat owner, I have no idea what he's talking about. What is "..the machined aluminum block" being referred to? I understand what he means by "inertia block", although the term is a little strange. Under normal setup conditions, the only direct contact between the floating tremolo components and the guitar body is at the bridge plate pivot points. Beyond that, there is indirect coupling through the strings on top and the tension springs underneath. If the claim is that somehow the springs are pulling the "inertia block" away from the bridge plate, then either the screws holding them together are loose or those are a very manly set of springs! That said, I can well believe that varying the tension on the springs affects coupling with the guitar body. But that's very different physics from a variance in metal-to-metal contact pressure.
  17. Heh, don't I know... Despite my youthful appearance, I was on the road full-time from ~1971-78. Lots of yucks. No money. I'll stick to software development during the week for the time being.
  18. I think you'd find a StewMac Strat neck to be a major improvement, given your feelings about the stock neck.
  19. Nice! If I could play like that, I'd consider quitting my day job :-)
  20. I've had a compound radius neck on my JTV-69 for almost two years. Worked out smashingly well.
  21. Oh, ouch! I hope you can find a reasonable solution - insurance or otherwise.
  22. It is possible that you have a defective selector switch.
  23. To mix metaphors, choosing the perfect neck is like choosing the perfect Unix editor. I am blessed/cursed with large hands and long fingers. No matter how carefully I played, I was always coming down on multiple strings when playing open chords on the stock JTV neck.
  24. Nice! I put an aftermarket (MightyMite) Strat neck on my JTV-69 last year and it does make a huge improvement in playability. There was no need to fiddle with the heel on mine, however.
  25. Just incredible to see that this problem is still chronic. Even if Line6 is not in a financial position to retool the plastic molding, one would think they could start installing a shim on all production units...
