Hello, Yesterday my new Variax JTV-89 came, unfortunately pushing Guitar Model Selector doesn't start variax, LED won't lit :/ Battery is fully charged. Does anyone know what is the problem? I thought that changing firmware to 2.0 will help, unfortunately, after installing version 2.0 problem is the same. Sorry form my English ;) Best regards Pawel

JTV-89 Possible neck pocket crack
ren758 posted a topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Hello, I purchased a JTV-89 early 2017, out of warranty now. I just noticed a small (1/2") crack on the (black) surface of the neck pocket, inside the top cutout. I am HOPING it is only a crack in the paint and not the wood. I have babied this instrument with the utmost care: no drops and regular cleaning/maintenance. 1) What are the chances this is a crack through the wood? I am a bit nervous unbolting the neck. 2) Has anyone experience paint cracking in the neck pocket region/is this common? 3) Assuming this is a paint crack, is there a solvent to remove the crack, and later buff out? Thanks all -
Changing The Wiring On My Jtv-89
Inerzia posted a topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I've been scratching my head for some time now trying to work out how the pickup switching works in my JTV-89, mainly because, although I like the pickups, I wanted to have more options on the magnetic side. I wanted something like what I would want on a HSH strat. That is: two 4conductor humbuckers with duncan triple shots and a single coil sized humbucker in the middle. The switch, as it is, doesn't give any option to add another pickup, because all four (well, five) conductors are soldered on a small PCB that's attached to the selector and it's impossible to see inside the selector to find some way to add anything or change any of the pickup/coil settings, so... I went and opened it. Well, I didn't exactly open the one inside my guitar, but a spare I got from the spanish distributor. The switch was failing and I didn't want to send the JTV to tech service because they are sluggish, so I asked them for a replacement switch and they sent it, on the condition that the guitar would be serviced at the store where I bought it. In fact, they did send the wrong switch the first time, so I ended up with two, one that seems to belong to a JTV-69 and the one I needed. I've been a customer for a long time, so the people at the store agreed to let me change it myself, which I never did, because once I bought a hardcase for the guitar, the switch stopped failing so often (It almost never fails now and I've worked out a way to quickly get it back to normal). So I opened the selector and found out how it works. It works in the same way a superswitch would, only this one is preset. There are fixed contacts and mobile ones. The fixed ones are printed in a way that does the coil splitting in positions 2 and 4 and does, well... you know... what a JTV-89 does with its mags :-) The switch is some kind of 2P5T, where on one pole you select the magnetic pickup setting and on the other you select modeling pickup setting. On the modeling side, the contacts are arranged in a standard fashion. Bad news first: The modeling side of the switch has three resistors (18,65k, 75,1k and 37,2k are the exact values, though they most likely correspond to standard values of 18k, 75k and 36k) and I'm guessing the variax brain detects which position the selector is on based on the resistance measured between the two contacts that go out the PCB. Good news: The values of those resistors are standard and they are possible to replicate, so you can use a standard two pole five throw blade selector and add another pickup (or whatever you want to do with your five) Better news: The lower PCB can be desoldered from the selector and soldered to a different one, so you don't have to mess around with resistor values and provide some new small board to solder them onto. PICTURES: YES!! I know I should include pictures in this very post, and at this very moment, but my camera is out of battery and my phone isn't good enough, so you'll have to wait, but the pics will come. I won't actually modify the guitar until the triple shots and the duckbucker are here, then I will have a friend route the guitar for me and then I will do the electronics so, for now, the only pics I'll post are the ones of the selectors. In a month or two (when I can buy the stuff) I'll start doing the mods- 4 replies

Hi, I'm selling my JTV-89 (black) and thought I should try to sell it internationally also. (eBay?) What would a suggested value be for the JTV-89? As far as I can tell, it has been replaced with the 89F and I also have seen that a few people prefer it over the Floyd Rose because of the (obvious) tuning stability as a hard tail bridge will give. It is in mint condition and does not have any dings or sctratches. Is 700€ a reasonable price? I dont find anything to compare it with on the european eBay sites. I'm in Europe, but as long as the buyer want to have it shipped I havent any issues with it.

I am starting to do the demos for my new album. The album concept is "keyboard free". All tracks are played using only Guitar, Bass and Drums. So to record the bass for "Lujon" by the great Henry Mancini, I dusted off my Variax 700 Bass. I used the 1949 Kay Upright Bass for the track and I think the model is kind of flat compared to the models in my James Tyler 89 and 69. It made me wonder if Line 6 is going to produce an updated bass. I've included the link to the demo, the bass is ok, but not as resonant as my real upright bass. https://soundcloud.com/kimguidry/lujon

Hi! I have a simple question that I hope someone can answer for me. I just need a sanity check before sending my Pod HD Pro back to the store. The problem is that when I connect my jtv-89 to my Pod HD Pro using variax interface I get no power to the guitar. Using the battery with the guitar works fine and when I connect the guitar to a Pod X3 Pro (using variax interface), it also works fine. So, are there any special settings on the Pod HD that I need to set or something? I couldn't find any information regarding this in the manual but I just want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious. And yes, I've set input to variax. Thanks! / Mattias

I hear its true that the new series of 2013 JTV's have the previous issues fixed? Is This true? IE? Is the switching problem fixed on the JTV-59? The neck on the 69? Thanx

For JTV-89 Customers Only: In addition to the 28 electric, acoustic and electric instruments, you also get five high-gain models exclusive to the JTV-89 guitars based on the high output magnetic pickups loaded into the Custom 1 Bank. Each model is based on a different pickup position, and delivers high-gain guitar tone while allowing you to access drop tunings, custom Dream Rig configurations and more. Because of this, you will NOT be able to modify or save your own custom settings to the Custom 1 Bank on the JTV-89 and 89F guitars.

Since getting my Variax recently I spent far more time playing around with its setup (i.e. how to connect it to my other hardware), and while I did play around with the cool features of the guitar itself, I've mostly left them alone. Yesterday I wanted to play a few notes using the awesome acoustic sounds after finishing my setup and found, to my slight surprise, that the battery was depleted. So, OK, it was a week since I charged it, and I was using the Variax during the week but, as stated, I didn't really use the effects all that much. So, a rather simple question: Am I right to suspect that the Variax drains the battery even when the effects aren't turned on? Does its sleep mode (i.e. cables unplugged) also drain the battery?

Hi guys, I'm a little confused about the bridge color of the JTV. I found several pictures with 'chrome' or 'black' bridges, but I can't find the difference in the models. Even on the model description page there are different colors: http://line6.com/jtv-89/seehear/photos http://l6c.scdn.line6.net/data/6/0a06434d71474f716fea4f466/image/jpeg/file.jpeg http://l6c.scdn.line6.net/data/6/0a06434d74a44f7170d9b46e9/image/jpeg/file.jpeg I prefer the black bridge. If it's a model update, that would be perfect :-) Thank you for your help.

Is the JTV-89 compatible with my POD XT Live?
-
Hello everyone. I've purchased a new JTV-89 yesterday and now that I got it at home, I'm having some issues getting things to actually play. Perhaps a small bit of backstory - I'm a newbie guitarist and have only played on a cheap classical guitar up to this point, however, getting an electric was always my goal (of course mastering said electric is my next goal ;) ). As such, I don't have a lot of audio equipement related to electric guitars. I do, however, have a pretty darn good computer (with an old, but good Audigy 2 sound card running kX audio drivers with custom DSP settings), and a nice amplifier and a pair of columns connected to that computer. As such, the JTV-89 seemed like a superb idea, because wouldn't have to buy extra equipement and could put more money into getting a good guitar rather than other set pieces for getting said guitar to play (amps, cables, whatnots). Before purchasing this JTV-89 guitar I had a chance to listen to it - it was then connected to a POD 500 and a laptop. As such, the USB interface, the battery - all those things were still sealed in their origial packages - I feel this is important information, as it suggests the guitar itself should be fine and the trouble I'm about to describe might be with one of the connecting elements, unless something had happened during transport, but the guitar was safely tucked in it's bag and the ride was smooth. Now at home I've unpacked the whole thing, charged the battery (after pluggin it into the guitar the little "battery meter" on the back of the Variax showed a full charge), and plugged everything to my computer (after installing the latest version of Workbench). However, the app said I still need to do some installations, because it couldn't detect the Variax (and suggested I run Monkey). I did so - I downloaded Monkey, installed it, and it said I have everything up to date (it DID detect the USB interface, but not the guitar itself). At this point I noticed red light on the USB Interface - flashing on the guitar side. Now, I've tried to connect things using a standard Ethernet cable (rather than the one that came with the guitar) - no luck there. Here are some other things I noticed: - The guitar port on the USB interface seems awfully loose, at least compared to similar ports on my computer or router. - The two knobs on the guitar (for changing the model and tunings) don't light up - I was under the impression that all you need to do is tap on them, but that doesn't seem to do anything. I may be a complete idiot (given that this is my first electric guitar ever, that's highly possible) and am simply doing something wrong. In fact, I'd prefer this to be the case, because then I'm sure anyone here will be able to easily point out my mistake and all will be fine with the world (if not my pride :P ). Otherwise, this might mean I've got a more serious problem on my hands, and since I'm in Poland, getting things fixed might not be easy. PS. My computer is running Windows 7 x64.

Hi everyone. I have a preety good PC with a decent sound card (running kX drivers) connected to an old but good NAD amplifier and that is connected to a pair of nice columns. Note, that none of this is equipement deisgned to work with electric guitars. My goal is to use the computer as a guitar amp and play through that - sending the signal to the columns. Recording would, at this point, also be possible, but at my skill level it's really not important. :P I've purchased a JTV-89 with the hope that it's USB interface would let me do that - that is, send the signal to the computer so I could listen to the guitar live (if not add amp effects, but I can sort of do that with the kX drivers). Alas, I didn't read the fine print, and the Variax has no such functionality. :( Thankfully, I can still return it. Still, the guitar, with it's wide range of instruments, is quite awesome so if possible I'd rather try to get this to work in the way I want, rather than give up and send everything back. The product page for the POD Studio GX mentions recording the most - something I don't need all that much. Again, what I want is just getting the sound to my computer so I can use my existing sound setup and play the guitar (so I'm guessing low latency is a requirement). Would a POD Studio GX allow me to do that? If not a POD Studio GX, then what else would I need to get things going?
