  1. "About the same length" can be a problem if the screws you found are longer than the stock ones. There is a long and glorious history of longer screws poking their way into the electronics cavity, and mangling the main circuit board. Tread cautiously....
  2. You may or may not find this to be the case... on paper this would be the "correct" way to go about it, as you shouldn't "need" a cab model when using an actual cabinet, but there are no real rules with modeling gear. Try it both ways and see what you like. I ran the HD500X with full models and cab sims in "studio direct" mode, into a tube power amp and 4x12 Marshall cab for years before going FRFR. Could never get the preamp only models without cab sims to sound like anything but a rusty chainsaw. All depends on the sound you're after, and the end result is all that matters. How you get there is entirely up to you, and a "wrong way" doesn't really exist.
  3. Guitar players are all crazy one way or another...but especially the seriously fixated brand-loyal ones. Trying to talk a lifelong Gibson/Fender/PRS/Whatever guy into believing that anything else is worthy of consideration is generally pointless. It's just like the tube snob conversations. They don't WANT anything else to be "good enough" because it would shatter a lifetime of deeply ingrained brainwashing, and they'd have to admit that their oft-regurgitated references to the Gospel According to "Insert Brand Here", is in fact just the result of effective advertising. And thus, nothing else will ever measure up....too much risk to the psyche.
  4. Nope. Don't know, and don't care. The truth is there is nothing magical about whatever components are in the POD, and nobody "official" is gonna tell you what they are anyway. There are far better, and infinitely more convenient options if all you want to do is listen to music from your computer...several of which have already been offered above. Personally, I'd start by fleeing in haste from that pair $50 computer speakers, and get some decent studio monitors, but that's another discussion entirely. Oh, and it's "smarty-pants"...;)
  5. Ideascale is the place for requests... won't do any good asking in here.
  6. Whatever magic fairy dust they've incorporated into this thing can't change the fact that the way we perceive loudness changes depending on the kind of sound we're listening to. Furthermore, this thing was clearly created with a completely different task in mind. Do what you like, but since you're not watching TV, or fidding with a 5.1 surround sound signal which might contain anything from whispered dialog to huge explosions, all being pumped through multiple speakers all over one's living room, how this thing is supposed to help with a guitar rig is beyond me. Leveling volumes is not mysterious, nor is it an intellectual pursuit requiring fancy toys to accomplish "accurately". You have all the tools you need in your head.
  7. Actually it's not weird at all. What's happening is really very simple, though not necessarily "obvious" at the outset. You are hearing the guitar acoustically, in addition to what's coming from your monitors. This creates dissonance because you're hearing the unaltered acoustic sound of the guitar on top of the alerted notes coming through the monitors. It's a whole lot easier to hear the guitar acoustically than most people realize, and this had fooled more than a few new Variax owners, myself included. Truth is, at lower volumes we always hear the guitar's inherent acoustic sound while playing...it's inches from your head. However, this is easily ignored with a regular guitar, as the pitch the guitar is actually producing is the same as what's coming through the speakers. But once there are two distinct pitches being produced by two different sources right in front of you, you're gonna hear that dissonance unless you crank up loud enough so that you cannot hear the guitar itself anymore... it's the only "fix". You've already proven all this by listening to the playback...if the guitar were actually sending both pitches to your DAW, you'd hear it in the playback.
  8. Here we go again... PERCEIVED LOUDNESS is what matters, not a number on a meter...this is ESPECIALLY true when comparing "widely varying tones", crafted at a volume, and in an environment completely different from that in which you intend to use them. The distorted tone @ 80 dB will blow the doors off a clean tone @ 80 dB, EVERY SINGLE TIME. So what good is leveling them all to some arbitrary number? Answer: it's not. Doing it this way, then cranking up to gig volume through a PA is gonna result in levels that are all over the place.
  9. Use the loudness meters on either side of your head.... you have my personal guarantee that they will never cause your computer to lock up.
  10. Nah...the "check out my awesomeness" types are just louder and more ceremonial in their presentations. The excessive pageantry makes it seem like they're everywhere, but the whiners will always outnumber them. In contrast, it's hard to throw a fit in style, which makes those folks easier to ignore... ;)
  11. What could possibly have been in this thread that would have dictated that you give up a rig that suits your needs? Not for nothing, but 98% of internet content is some blithering idiot's tale of woe. Making decisions based on forum ramblings is guaranteed to leave you disappointed eventually. If something is working for you, run with it. Just because Bob from French Lick, Indiana decided he didn't like it, doesn't mean you have to give it up too...
  12. Lol...Good afternoon, folks! I'd like to welcome you all to another episode of "Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't"...;) I eagerly await the wild speculation about a forthcoming (?) polyphonic pitch-shifter which is sure to follow...
  13. I'm sure its worth plenty...it does seem to have robbed you of a sense of humor, however. Sorry to have ruffled your feathers. And for what it's worth, I was really commenting on the answer you received, not criticising you for asking the question. "Secret stuff I can't discuss" and "getting functionality to work better and smoother" isn't really an answer, is it? It conveys no more information than the typical "new and improved" ad copy that adorns everything from TV's to dish soap. Merry Festivus...
  14. Sorry to rain on your parade, but you may as well be asking the CEO for a video of his last colonoscopy....most of the time they won't admit what time it is, let alone divulge anything they consider even remotely proprietary.
  15. In other words..."nothing that you'd notice if your life depended on it". 😂ðŸ‘
  16. Might be nice to have an infinite number of characters at your disposal I suppose, but just to play Devil's advocate for a moment...you could name them Lucy, Ricky, Fred, and Ethel. If you know what it is, what difference does it make how it's labeled?
  17. Things tend not to work well if the edit software is open and running at the same time you're trying to actually use the guitar. Make your changes, then close out down and see if it does the same thing.
  18. No idea what the Boss and Zoom stuff is like as far as reliability is concerned, but I can tell you that they're nowhere near the same in terms of versatility and the quality of the tones you can get out of it. If you want something you can beat the daylights out of, get a Helix. That thing is a tank.
  19. Had mine for 4 years and no issues such as what you describe. That being said, these guitars are a little quirky, and are obviously dependent on the onboard software to do what they do...as nifty as it is, the tech ain't perfect and computers do weird $hit when it suits them. If it's still within your return period, dump it and get a new one. There's no reason to assume that the replacement is going to manifest the same problem. Just out of curiosity, was Workbench up and running when the noise started, and does it persist if you close it?
