Welcome to the fold! The good thing about that collection of pedals is that selling a few of them off will go along way towards off-setting the expense of Helix. I sold I think 15 pedals and paid for it entirely. And I only regret one of them.

You could make it sound like you were playing your guitar through a trumpet, which may or may not be desirable....
-
I experienced the same thing, plugging different guitars into the same Helix patch is not like plugging different guitars into a tube amp. What sounds great with one typically sounds awful (or at least unsatisfactory) with the others. I have seven guitars that I routinely plug into Helix and I've got dedicated patches for all of them. There's plenty of room, and it encourages me to try out more amps than I otherwise would!

This one isn't mine, but I voted for it and found it worth shining a light on. More than one split/merge for parallel paths! http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Multiple-splitting-options-for-Path-A-and-B/833936-23508#idea-tab-details

I finally pulled the trigger on this bundle and must say it is a fantastic collection of sounds. Worth every cent. Less like a bundle of "custom presets" and more like a handful of new amp models to play with. Very nice work! I haven't spent as much time with them as I'd like, but at this point I'm loving my Strat into the Badger. It's a mix of Helix amps, pre-amps, stock cabs and Glen's IRs. The guy did some work on this!

Or drop a gain block directly after the amp.

$145 mod to fix the Helix: Whammy and Octave tracking glitch issue
Verne-Bunsen replied to WickedFinger's topic in Helix
I believe it pre-dates the 80's by a good bit! Watching David Gilmour sitting in the dirt twiddling knobs on Live At Pompeii is one of my favorite moments from that film. Admittedly less practical in other circumstances though... -
Perchance does that also remove associated commands?
-
I don't have the opportunity to study that just right now, but I intend to. Thanks for posting it! This brings to light an area where I think the manual is quite lacking: detailed descriptions of effect parameters!

I should think Helix can definitely handle that. It's hard to make it all out exactly as the image is a bit lo-res, but it basically looks like a guitar with a wireless unit into some effects through a switching device then to the amps, with hardware to handle amp switching. At a guess, "Mad" and "Pissed" could probably be handled by a single instance of one of the Marshall heads (2204 Mod maybe?) with different settings assigned to Snapshots or a footswitch. Two cabs could be loaded and assigned to switch by the same command, or one IR block set to switch between two IRs with said command. And there's no reason that all of it has to be in the same patch. It's a good bet Jerry doesn't use all of that in any given song. Give it a whirl!

Even when the bias is unintentional, it seems that a great many of these "shootout" videos are made by guys who have been using their Fractal or Kemper gear for years but just borrowed their buddy's Helix 10 minutes before the shoot and have not spent much time learning the machine. It should come as no surprise that the gear they are intimately familiar with sounds better under their fingers!

A'ight, I re-started the phone and the app to no avail, then I cleared history and data in settings and now it seems to be working....

Hello all, Ever since last nights maintenance, I can't load the Helix forum on my iPhone. All of the other Line 6 forums load fine, but trying to access the Helix forum just directs me to the Line 6 mobile homepage. I've even entered a different forum, switched to the "full version" and then tried to access the Helix forum, only to find myself back at the Line 6 mobile homepage. I can find links to specific threads via Google and I can follow them successfully, but trying to then follow the link back to the main forum takes me right back to the homepage. It works fine on my iPad, which is weird. Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks, VB

Fizz/Static/Blown-speaker-sound across the board?
Verne-Bunsen replied to Verne-Bunsen's topic in Helix
I've been following the goings-on as this thread has continued, but haven't chimed back in myself in a while as I got called out of town and I've been trying to sort out my own thoughts on the matter before attempting to type them. I was away for a couple of weeks, but I'm back and working on things, and the short version is: Helix and I are getting along quite nicely these days. The longer version: As mentioned earlier in the thread, I conducted a factory reset and updated to the latest firmware. I'd been on 2.0 and hadn't seen any reason to bother updating again till this. Initially, I didn't think that there had been any improvement, and that's what I reported. I wiped my presets and started over fresh and my opinion started changing, because I was getting sounds that I was quite happy with. One thing that I started doing that helped tremendously was assigning the high cut (and low cut, but this is mostly pertaining to the high cut....) in the cab blocks to Snapshots. Previously I had been hesitant to get very heavy handed with them because it would really suck the life out of my clean tones. By assigning them to Snapshots I'm able to leave them set generously for cleans and then tighten them up as necessary to combat fizz in dirty tones. That's been huge. So my take away from this: The factory reset and firmware update may well have helped, but I can't say that definitively. The process of things sounding better seemed to come on as subtly as the process of sounding "off". Odd, that... Helix is my first modeling unit, and as such it's my first foray into such intense and precise tone tweaking. I think that my ear started cuing into things that I simply hadn't observed preciously. Having heard it, I couldn't "un-hear" it. While a contentious topic, the high and low cuts are a tool to be used as needed, and assigning them to Snapshots allows one to adjust them to a given sound without sacrificing another. I can't say that any of this will be on benefit to the others that have been chiming in with similar issues, but I'm glad that the thread is going and that the discussion is taking place. Hopefully we can all gain from it. I've captured a couple of sound clips that I'll share here. Not so much to show off my playing or tone sculpting skills, but as a counterpoint to the sound clips I was putting up earlier in this thread. They all use Helix stock cabs and were recorded direct into Logic Pro with no post-tinkering. I'm pretty happy with what I'm getting! This one is my P90 equipped Les Paul into the "Stone Age" EH-185, the same combination actually that set me on the path that ultimately led to me start this thread. I'm using it for dark jazz tone. https://www.dropbox.com/s/n3rwbymdustvzbk/Autumn%20Leaves.mp3?dl=0 This is my Jazzmaster into the AC-30 Fawn, a nice crunchy tone. https://www.dropbox.com/s/w89241tyioizp5m/Get%20Back.mp3?dl=0 THis is my Les Paul with Classic '57 Humbuckers into the JCM-800. It's about as dirty as I go. I recorded it a while back for the "clone this tone" thread that was going a while ago. I rather like it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/w6tnxylqfyfklx3/JCM800%20Stock%20Cabs.mp3?dl=0 Thanks very much to all who chimed in to help me, and I hope some of this can go on to help someone else! -
I enjoy watching these videos and I typically learn a thing or two from them, but I don't allow them to weigh very heavily on my conclusions about any of the units involved. It is all very subjective, and it's likewise very much subject to the skill of the person setting up the units and their familiarity with each. Go watch Pete Thorn's demo of Helix for example, tell me those tones fall short of any imaginable standard.

I use the high and low cut on the cab blocks. The low cuts are pretty consistent at 60hz, the high cuts I have assigned to change with Snapshots. For clean sounds I run it generously, typically around 12k, and I bring it in as necessary to tame fizz as gain increases. I've gone as far as 4k in some instances, don't think I've had to go farther than that.

Clearing all of the blocks will not reset any changes to the input/output block parameters. The simplest and most thorough way to wipe a preset is by copying a blank preset over it.

Everybody knows Hitler struggled with his guitar tone, I've no desire to have him in my rig. Now, Coma Doof on the other hand... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DcqnkzGEFQ

Every time I think I've got my "go-to" amps figured out, someone posts something like this... Sounds great, going to have to play with it!
-
I set output levels using the input meter of my DAW. I adjust the patches so that they hit the input at about -12db on an "authoritative strum", which allows plenty of room for transient spikes and a 3-5db overall boost for leads where desirable.

Friedman + Fryette PS2 + Helix + IR's = awesome
Verne-Bunsen replied to ColonelForbin's topic in Helix
Well done man, I love this stuff! -
I generally start with the cab associated with the amp in question then augment it with at least one more cab in parallel to round the sound out. Might be the same cab with a different mic, might be a 1x12 to add focus to a 4x12, may be a 2x12 or a 4x12 to add some body and depth to a 1x12. Rather than an "even split", I use an A/B so that the balance between the two can be manipulated (which is what makes 2 cabs in parallel more versatile than a single dual cab block). I've been using variations on the techniques in these two videos and getting great results. I've got a library of Ownhammer and Red Wirez IRs sitting largely unused.
-
Duly noted, thanks for the tip! I was indeed using the 6"x9" eliptical cab, I'll investigate some other options. I have a collection of Ownhammer and Red Wirez IRs, never have tried 3Sigma's stuff. They get a lot of positive attention, might be a good opportunity to try them out.

Sounds great! I plugged one of my Teles into the Supro when I first got my Helix and couldn't get anything I liked. I've learned a lot since then, might be time for a re-visit!
