Im not disagreeing with you, but are you sure you are just not hearing the volume drop?? Heres how you can test it a little easier without the volume drop.. Use your preset. In your second split turn path A up 3db. Pan your first split 100% left. Now save the patch. Delete the bottom row of blocks. Play a few notes. Now double click on your saved patch. play a few more notes. This should give you the effect of toggling between the two without the volume drop. You'll have to delete the blocks every time to start your test (one by one no less because god knows a shift or control click function would be way too hard to implement lol) but at least you can switch back to your saved preset very quickly and without the drop in volume. This can give you kind of an A/B side by side comparison. Ive tried it with a similar patch, with quite a few at-home distractions going on, and i think im just hearing a drop in volume and no tone change....but if you can provide some concrete evidence of sonic degradation id love to suss it out. Interested for sure.

Boy i wish i had this issue. Helix sounds bright/fizzy/ no warmth at all, when paired with HX cabs. I choose IRs.
-
Why dont you play a short simple rythm using one of the factory presets and maybe a couple of other members can do likewise, with the same preset, and then post here for comparison. even better if you could do two (use a reamp)...one before the reset and one after the reset.

Possibly the best crunch tone I ever got with Helix...
willjrock replied to GuitarjonSDS's topic in Helix
Youve had so many great tones i dont think you can say that this one is any better than any other, just different. YOU may like it more than others youve tracked, but that doesnt necessarily make it better....or worse. Nowadays i tend to feel like sounds fit together better, more so than any one tone im getting, is "better" than any other. -
Nope. told you there was no horse to beat 10 posts ago, yet you just want to continue perpetuating with the last word....but hey, keep working on your posts for 5 days for the 3 or 4 words im actually reading from it. l i bet you thought youd sound "real real cool" saying this.

Theres no single reason to do anything. Youve never upvoted someones post as confirmation that you saw it? Exactly, Reply to the topic. Poor comments are a dime a dozen. If its one post, two posts, its easy to move past. You arent going to set anyone straight or change the way they comment. Most often, now you have two or more people bickering. Actually, Its a perfect example...and the fact that you wont let it die underscores my point even further. A) OPs post and topic B) poor comment C) You attempting to straighten out poor commenter D) backandforth backandforth backandforth E) Time to move on.

It may sound as if im trying to be funny, but as long as you have nothing else to compare them to, or no others players set up to compare them to, it really doesnt matter what you get. As long as they are functional, they will work fine. You will learn to compensate for their deficiencies as you would with any monitor, and you will continue to tune helix until it sounds good to YOU...so It doesnt matter if they cost a penny or $1,000. Its when you start playing helix thru similar TYPE set-ups or having guys you jam with similar set-ups show up and you think "oh man his stuff sounds good" or "oh man Axl, he can play but man, $50 set up smokes his $500 set up" (which may or may not even be a product of his monitor choice)...only then will you start making a determination as to whether or not you like the speakers you paid a penny for. Dont sweat it too much until you have a specific goal in mind.

Thats a fair point, but there are plenty of other scenarios. Arpeggiated passages are the first that springs to mind. Even with melodyne you would have to add the effect pre-distortion to get the best result, but it does do a great job. Try even just a pitch block by itself on a clean preset with the mix at 100, pitched down a full octave. Not a difficult task, but helix will still only sound 50 to 70% of the notes the way they are intended to sound.
-
Why dont you get his number if he means that much to you that you think you need to speak for him? I actually meant as being the focal point. Not A lead tone... THE lead tone. The main point of focus. Agree that single note lines is one of the few ways to get descent results.

Brother ive worked in the music industry most of my like as a recording engineer, so your "plaques" mean a lot more to you than they do to me. Im not sure if thats supposed to be a validation for your opinions or what, but it doesnt require a degree in radiologic science to determine that the harmonizers are adequate at best. Is every effect on the Helix going to be of the highest quality? No, of course not, but maybe adding fx simply for the sake of having more fx isnt the best recipe. As a subtle effect, i find the harmonizing tolerable. As a lead effect it doesnt work well. In fact i have software programs that do a better job.
-
lol..Im just saying man. Saying it sounds good when pretty much everybody knows it differently, really doesnt make a lot of sense to me. I mean does it? Does it make sense to you?
-
The helix harmonizers sound so bad i never even gone thru the effects to realize that there was a legacy menu for the harmonizers lol. Sure ive used them for light pitch shifting, chorusing effects, or to add ambience, and they sound ok for those purposes, but never harmonizing. They are simply unusable for this purpose, unless you are looking that "effect". When you have people posting here saying "it sounds great" it completely removes any of their credibility, and makes you wonder if there is a deeper agenda in mind. The harmonizers clearly do not sound good. Are they incapable of hearing this or are they making an attempt to protect the helix brand? There are plenty of things that make helix a great piece of gear but no one serious about a harmonizer effect would ever purchase helix for that purpose. I really hope they DO improve upon this area as duncann pointed out.

No where else to turn to before I return My Helix
willjrock replied to leadplayer420's topic in Helix
Im sure it didnt do anything. I wish i had a nickel for every thread that turned out this way. Repeated factory resets dont miraculously fix helix. Its probably your brain at this point. Much in the way some tones will sound great to you one day and can sound bad another. Im sure you'll be back to questioning what youre hearing in a couple of days. I figure if i get 3 good tones out of helix its worth the money. Ive paid more, for less tones. This phenomenon puts me in mind of a bad recording that we may have done earlier in our home recording career. The recording sucks and we know it sucks, but after listening to it a while we think "hey that sounds pretty good". You'll have good days and bad days with the unit. In most cases, its just the way our brain and ears interact. More good than bad once you really become a confident user. -
Well Its pretty often i see a topic, and then somebody will have an opinion, and then somebody comes along and jumps on that person for having an opinion they dont agree with. That where things almost always go down hill. Your post was quoted as more of an example. As i said, i wasnt speaking about you specifically, and i know you are usually pretty cool.. If i were, i would have followed up your next post by defending my views. . Im not doing that, im apologetic if anything, so lets move on.
-
So dont add something that makes the helix a way better tool just because its over the head of some users? Im not sure i agree with that logic. To your point about the OP wanting to plug the Helix in, turn it on and get great tones - thats what EVERYBODY wants. Nobody wants to spend all their time tweaking (OK maybe a couple of us down here in the rabbit hole :) ) Maximum results with minimum effort. But thats not what the OP is asking for at all. He is saying that there is a digital fizz that is hard to dial out.....or maybe impossible to some. I happen to agree with him, but mostly in the case of using the helix cabs. Without IRs the helix would be unusable for my tastes. The cabinets are too bright, lack any warmth, sound dull and lifeless, and just about every other negative adjective you can imagine.

Cut the input levels to the amp with a gain block or your guitar volume knob (gain block works better because its more easily repeatable and keeps your hands free) This will clean up that flab nicely. Use it first in your chain and start by cutting the gain block volume by about -6db.
-
Not a big deal man. You are usually one of the better ones. I guess I didn’t mean you specifically so much but more in the sense of all of us. I apologize if you felt singled out, and re-reading my post I could see how it would look like that.
-
If L6 would simply implement tools similar to a cablab, it would A) make Helix a better and more realistic sounding product, especially in the area of the signal chain that is the most important to the tones in modeling B) allow to you make the sound as dark as you want and kill all the fizz with something other than a lowpass filter. Just do it L6. You want modeling that is realistic, but its not very realistic to mic a guitar cab and NOT have control of some of these very important parameters, if not the MOST important. Including but definitely not limited to deep phase editing and left right placement.
-
Lets address the topic, rather than what other people say. Jumping in because someone needs "put in their place" usually just makes things worse.
-
Thats great news phil. Ive never actually hit "restore" so i didnt know what it did ha ha.
-
I dont have a problem with the amp models. I feel the same as you but it is 100% related to helix cabs. I do not even have a single preset out of more than 100 where i can appreciate the tones im getting from helix cabs. No warmth and brittle, harsh highs is the common denominator. With IRs i feel different mostly but then im alway reaching for the cone edge files, which are darker, as opposed to the more neutral sounding files, which supports your opinion.
-
I apologize. I should have specified. I always make that mistake. i get so used to editing on the editor that i dont even consider the possibility that someone is editing on the machine itself....but as per your comments i see you are similar ha ha....you never considered the fact that i wasnt editing on the machine. I wish they would do something here. The IR process still isnt as easy as it *should* be. I don't use hx cabs at all, so IRs are extremely important to me. Having to number them all the time or even rename them all the time, since the names never fit, is a bit of a PITA. Not being able to see which IRs are tied to which presets means that i may have 40 IRs not even being used, but still sitting in slots taking up valuable space that could be used for auditioning new tones. 1)If they could make the actual slot number part of the export, that could help a lot. 2)A separate back-up and restore for just the IRs could help too. 3)Hoping for, sooner rather than later, SOME way to see which IRs are being used and hopefully by which preset, even when being used multiple times.
-
Totally agree on the IR slots, though sometimes when i bring it up i get the ole "Whattayaneedthatfor????" ahhhh ok yeah, i forgot about this lil maneuver. I think ive always been afraid to try it, worried that i may lose one of the presets. By the time i think to try it on a preset that doesnt matter, its a distant after thought. Thanks for pointing that one out. Thats correct...and again, i specifically remember one firmware version that acted a bit differently, where copying an edited preset, allowed the user to paste that newly edited preset to a new location. It was right around the time the Matchless was added. Give or take. Right! Not a dealbreaker, but i was having a hard time making MY peace with it i guess. Until now, as Doug says, after youve copied and pasted the edited patch (which as we know - will relocate the unedited version of your patch) , you can just hit save on the edited and original patch (which as we forgot - will replace the old patch with the newly edited version) Kinda like a "reverse save as" lol. What a mind f**k! but i guess now, i can make peace with that. Still, how hard of an implementation can "save as" be?
-
A "save as" would be nice but alternatively adding this function to Helix would be handy, and nearly as good as "save as", which seems like a no brainer IMO. One of the earlier firmware versions allowed you to copy in present state (copying the preset for pasting elsewhere, after you had made some changes to it, instead of the current solution which only allows you to copy the currently saved preset -which really doesnt help anything) I dont know..Not a dealbreaker. I guess i just feel like its one of those things that simply shouldnt be missing with the flexibility of todays toys. Without one of these functions, it makes changing any preset impossible. Literally. Yeah i guess you *could* stop what you are doing, try and remember the two or three changes youve already made, copy your preset, search for an open slot, paste it, go back to the preset you WERE working on...ect...ect...Oh man what a buzzkill. I NEVER go into a preset with "Hey i might change this preset, i better copy it first" in mind. This implementation seems to make so much sense, it should have never been missing (or removed- as i said about an earlier firmware)

Are M-series effects going to be included in the helix at any point?
willjrock replied to TheMcMillanator's topic in Helix
Already been done.
