Does anyone know for sure whether or not the update takes care of the IR problem where they need numbered to re-import properly? Those few extra characters that im now using for numbers would be useful to have back.

Gain is not the issue here. Its an EQ thing, which is put into motion by using different strategies, for getting the proper amount of gain from the patch for ones tastes. Sometimes we might like an amps tone, but it doesn't produce the amount of gain we had envisioned, so we might add a drive pedal in front of the amp. Even though we are now getting the right amount of gain, it changes the sound a little bit, in a way that cant be dialed out on the pedal itself or without added EQ. Often causing a flabby low end. Turning down your volume knob produces about the same effect, but getting back to that same spot on the volume knob three or four times through out a song rarely happens, if ever. Especially if the passage tends to be faster and/or complicated. Using a gain block allows you to return to the same level every time easily, without thought. Another instance is times when a person may want to dim the amp somewhat, and bring the gain and or level up higher than usual, on the drive pedal. Or Kinky Boost in front of any amplifier. Sounds good but can simply be too fat. A gain block before KB can help alleviate the issue.

Well thats really cool. You showed me there is an option there. Mines always on the list. I see what you are saying, but when youve reached that point of no return, tab enter is your quickest route to reloading a preset, as im sure you may know. I think if you know you are going to be doing some editing, your best bet is probably to switch over to list view right off the bat. Though i DO like the effect icons view, it doesnt seem as if there is any real advantage to it, just the disadvantages we're discussing currently. Right. I wasnt sure what to think about this at first because in the old editor i spent a LOT of time with those two buttons, but i guess i just decided that it didnt make any difference which two keys raised and lowered values....as long as it stays one way or the other. I liked this because in the old editor when you tried to dial the mid freq band down to around 160hz, it was a real pain getting close to that number with a single click of the mouse, then id have to stop and right click, fill in value, then hit enter, when all i wanted was a general idea at the moment. Just an FYI if youre finding the increments of 10 a little slow for you, hold down shift. It puts you in hyper speed mode :) Yeah i didnt know this. Im not a fan of this approach either. If you type in a value, id like to get that value. I suppose this would have bothered me 5 years ago. Like i said If i type in a value, id like to get that value. Theres really no reason NOT to as far as i can see. But then if i needed 667hz and could only get to 668hz i dont think its going to cost me a record deal ;) As a matter of fact unless we have the Q set to 10, i doubt if its going to affect us much at all. In the end i dont disagree with you. I just think that theres too much good stuff, that some of the smaller stuff can be overlooked for a while. I can get used to the new things, but please dont change it and make me learn another process, again. One thing i hoped they'd never change was the fact that i could get from the first preset or IR in a list, to the last one with a single click. 1-128 boom! or 1A to 27B one click...The new alternative isnt bad though. Another thing i really like is clicking on the IR label brings up a list of 10 or so that can be scrolled through and selected.

The way it’s set up now seems to make pretty good sense to me. When you say this is where you spend the least time on the editor, can you elaborate a bit please? The way I’m seeing it, this area gives you access to everything. It’s reall about the only thing you need.

Well brother I’m sorry to say it but there hasn’t been any change so whatever you ARE hearing is more than likely on your end. You have any links for these other people experiencing these similar circumstances?

Thiis is something I’ve been doing since I was a teenager but have found it works just as well if not better in the modeling world , In the modeling world it seems to be a bit more beneficial. Often when adding boost pedals before an amplifier the sound tends to become a little bloated as you know. You can use the controls on the pedal but that control is a post gain level control. What we are looking for is to decrease the volume pre-gain. By adding a volume pedal at the beginning of your chain, you can tighten up the flab pretty nicely. Try volume pedal, Klon, Marshall or whatever you use in your fav set up. Decrease the volume to about -16 on your gain block. Now the very first block in your chain. That’s usually a descent starting point. Less volume for tighter lows, more volume for fatter bottom. Hope this works for you guys. It’s something that has stuck with me since the early days.

You can also attempt to reach out to a fellow user that you may notice has not updated.

I see now... But i HAVE seen dudes who with the old editor, had a lot more information on their screen than me. Im going to say part of it is the "presonalization" in the computers settings. Nooooooo......I didnt even notice they were gone.... Yet! Im soooo glad they are gone. How many times i accidentally deleted a block because of those. Just right click select clear block.

Right on brother. You probably also know that works on about every plugin, DAW, and monitoring software made?....Much the same way ctrl+z (undo) works on simple text. Lol @ tweekt into a corner. Been there before :)

Hey you can test for yourself. I encourage it. We haven't tested everything and thats the only way to be certain.

Appreciate your input duncann. One area where i think L6 is making improvements in its modeling, is making controls more meaningful. Its kind of pointless (not always) if you have to really squint to hear something. Im sure you have noticed the older amp models have multiple controls that dont really do a lot. Seems like we're seeing less and less of that with the newer models. Take the ripple control for instance, just find a happy medium for it and get rid of it. Its not making any difference one way or the other so the option is a waste of space. I appreciate deep control when plausible, but having controls that make nearly no difference to the sound, just seems rather pointless IMO....and im not saying that about every control ive mentioned here. Maybe my head just hasnt wrapped around it yet, and im cool with that.

Tests ive seen found no audible difference. In the future, if you just want to have piece of mind for your own self. Record a dry track for reamping. Reamp thru your current firmware, on your fav patch, THEN update. Youd have to roll back to 2.21 to know for sure now, but you *could* find out if you really wanted to.

Was scrolling even an option in earlier versions? Definitely not for me. Unless i was bugged....I dont recall any scroll support whatsoever. Id even asked for scroll support in several posts.

Its good, but im not wowed by it. First of all, whats up with that one random delay stab every once in a while? I cant seem to dial it out. Next up is the headroom. It sounds good a bit lower, but it messes with my guitar tone a bit much. Bringing the mix down helps some yeah, but that dials out the wow/flutter and i like that rather high on this model. Lastly im not sure about the dry thru. I cant seem to find its use. Oh and the ramp. Havent noticed any difference in its use either. All negative stuff i know. Im not down on this effect. I rather like it. Just pointing out some of the things holding it back for my tastes.

Agree with this. The update is a definite improvement. You will not be disappointed.

I wish i could offer some helpful advice to you guys, but then the fix would probably be simple if i could. I only have my own anomalies to talk about. My update came off without a hitch as they almost always do, but the only thing i noticed was - yesterday was the first time ive turned my helix off since updating. When i arrived home from work and turned it on, it rebuilt all the presets again. Didnt make any difference to anything just a longer than usual wait til boot. I wanted to shut it off and try it again, but was having too much fun with brit Trem . Even as a guy more drawn to mid to higher gain tones, for the first time since owning Helix ( a year and a half-ish) with this amp, i just want to play guitar as opposed to dialing tones. I literally have never cared to jam on a patch until brit trem.

I would do another install.

Hey man, just wondered. Does the new backup/restore feature take care of the issue of having to number IRs, to get them to import in to the same location? I guess what im asking is will the IRs import in the same order the were exported in, regardless of how they are numbered or alphabetized? That would be big. A step in the right direction without doubt, because it open up 3 more characters for description of IRs.
-
Yeah i really dig this pedal. Never owned the real thing, but somehow on the helix, it makes things my presets sound more analog. It doesnt often work in a preset(yet) but when it does, its like the second coming of god :)
-
You can post some audio examples, but theyre not going to very telling. What you would need to do is reamp a dry patch through the 2.21 firmware, and then reamp that same dry patch through the exact same preset but in 2.30 firmware. That will be brutally honest as to how much difference ther is.

Im not sure. I dont believe so. I was actually surprised to see a thread where people do not like it. I cant explain that one, unless it has to do with their monitor or their "Appearance and Personalization" configuration. The one thing i did find where L6 may have cut it just a bit too close is (and hey, id rather adapt than have them change the functionality- its probably more me than anything L6 missed on) they've added scroll support, and thats great, but once in a while if you inadvertently scroll in the wrong place you increase or decrease values, and with no undo it can be a little frustrating....but again, i'll chalk that up to me not paying attention to where im scrolling exactly.
-
Thats a great point man, that never occurred. Still Id have to agree that the difference is probably not worth the thought.

So far theres been one test done that i know of, and it showed that there was no audible difference in sound. Now that test does not cover the the entire unit and you very well could be using different components that what was tested. The only way to know for sure is to reamp one of your settings thru 2.21 and import it into 2.3, but i have a hunch that there is no audible difference between 2.21 and 2.3 across the board, other than the obvious. Ive also stumbled onto a very unofficial and unscientific test of my own and have concluded the same. No audible change.
