Because thats what Helix is going to convert the IRs to, no matter what you put in. I heard one or two say that there is an advantage to 96k IRs, but ive yet to hear an audible difference.
-
100% with you. Love the ability to double click on the IRs and have the list come up. This editor is FAR more advanced than the last, which i disliked from day 1.

Wonder why you wouldnt ask either side for their "statistics"......IF you were REALLY interested in statistics and not just out for a midnight troll? Its not hard to see who you are trying to side up to. Next time youre trying to be slick, you'll have to do a little better than that.

Dude, its not important to have played through every amp, cab, and combination of the two. I mean you DO hear sounds on the radio and think "man what a great guitar sound" and then go off to investigate what the guitar player is using? Right? Its not just me that wants to have a little background and understanding on the sounds i hear, is it? Even if ive never played thru the rig. You HAVE seen other guitar players live and want to understand what makes their rig tick, or have been at least a semi professional studio before, right? Sheesh. I guess you really are going to have to forego a little of that common sense :P

I cant say enough about the new editor. IMO its perfect. I couldnt ask for anything more as far as functionality, and the graphics are outstanding as well. It makes the unit even more fun to play and maybe even sound better. :P I give it a 10. Thanks L6! Job well done. Here are some improvements that im aware of, that have affected my use of the editor dramatically, which have also made a mouse completely unnecessary. If you know of any other editor shortcuts or improvements that could be helpful, please chime in. up/down arrows cycle thru all values side to side arrows cycle thru all parameters tab to cycle thru presets/IRs (which ever you have selected in the librarian), paths 1 and 2, model list - not new but handy control + number cycles thru snapshots - thanks soblivion shift + up/down arrows increase or decrease values much more rapidly parametric EQ - mid freq values such as 180hz are MUCH more easily selected while up/down arrows cycle thru values in such an intuitive and intelligent manner.
-
Another little find ive run into is that holding down shift+ the up/down arrows will cycle through values in much larger increments, often groups of 10. Full marks to Line 6 for this editor!

You have to know what you want. You dont go into a shoe store and try on every pair of shoes in the store. You look for the Nikes, then you look for the gray ones, then you look for the size 11s, then you try those on. Seems like a lot of people spend time experimenting with an Uberkab with V30s and a 57 because they dont know the tone theyve been attracted to all their lives is a Marshall sound with a 421 pointed at 25watt greenbacks. A little background and a little common sense goes a long way. As far as whats quicker, its really not part of the discussion. Good tone will take some sacrifices, just the same as using a hardware set-up. Theres going to be some experimentation involved....besides, once your sounds are set, the stock cabs are NO quicker because all youre doing is selecting a preset.... unless one is to spend all his time auditioning sounds. The high end harshness is extremely minimal in IRs unless you have a poor head/cab match or are pushing the outer boundaries of the tone controls and/or distortion, so saying you hear it "just as much"......respectfully bro, it sounds like a bit of an exaggeration. Not only that but there are other aspects of helix stock cabs that just dont stand up to IRs without generous amounts of EQ. Starting with a lack of any cabinet warmth, and any real characteristics of the mic its attempting to model. I have ALL of the mics being modeled except for a few of the Neumanns and brother the stock cabs sound a lot more like the same file, with a bit of a different EQ curve applied, more so than the sound of any real mic i own..... Even compared to the IR files which certainly exhibit the qualities of the mic associated to the file. Im not sure what exactly you think has changed? A few of us have tested firmware versions against one another, after claims that certain firmware releases "sound better" only to underscore the fact that the cabinets sound the same. They null out completely, so if youre trying to say L6 has been modifying the cabinets over the course of their firmware releases, youd have to point out where you hear a change so it can be tested and proven. As far as i know L6 has never even claimed to make any alterations to the cabs, nor has such been described in any of the release notes. EDIT: I thinks its important to note that my comments are mainly directed towards mid to higher gain sounds.

Brother, most everyone uses IRs, except a handful around here that are somewhat gun-ho on the whole topic. There's too much tweaking and experimentation involved in the stock cabs. They dont sound a lot like the cabs they are modeled after, nor do the mic models impart any of the characteristics of the real mic, and there is a lack of control that doesn't afford you that hyper-realism. Left right movement for starters. Sure ive heard some ok sounds after a bunch of fidgeting, but how that compares to a near exact replication of some of the finest cabinets, speakers, and preamps, in the history of guitar, in a good room , made by good engineers, is a distant second at best. To say the stock cabs are on par with a near carbon copy, of those elite tones would be biased opinion, to put it mildly.
-
Yeah, often after updates, people will proclaim that "everything just sounds better". Thats not likely and im usually the first to criticize similar comments, but the cabs DO sound a bit more mellow this time around. Im ok to admit that its probably placebo,or even minor adjustments made to my room, my brain, and most DEFINITELY my monitor situation, but suddenly the stock cabs sound slightly more usable. If nothing has changed for you other than the firmware, whats your gut tell you? Less fizz or the same?
-
I think the whole point here is relating to the stock cabs. Nobody really complains of the high end harshness once they've switched to IRs but folks expect the native cabs to be useful as well. Yet only select few seem to really appreciate them. Some cant afford them, some just plain feel like they shouldn't have to buy them, as helix should be a perfectly usable piece of gear on its own. That being said, it DOES sound like some of the high end harshness is gone. Im stuck on a set of "back up monitors" for the next couple of weeks. They are a bit unfamiliar and wont afford me the confidence to know for 100% sure, but there are ways around this.
-
Have you updated brother? If not would you mind exporting some reamped tracks from 2.20 or whatever you're using? I really feel like this update might have a bit of a different sound. The native cabs mostly. Im often the first to proclaim it doesn't when the claims come rolling in, and im sure some of the voices saying that it DOES arent far behind. I got side tracked fixing a computer during the update, and im not monitoring on my familiar system, so its a little hard to tell for sure, but it sounds like some of the harshness is gone.
-
Almost makes it seem to sound better :)
-
Thanks man. Would not have found that one out for a while.
-
Hey nice!! Not only has this problem been completely solved with 2.30, but it actually removed a step making it even simpler yet. You dont even have to hit enter. Just cycle thru the models with the up & down arrows on your keyboard. Thanks L6. This is much appreciated.
-
Yeah but its not just a matter of hi gain low gain, ect...Im getting plenty of good low gain sounds from high gain amps. Vice versa. ( btw im most partial to mid gain) I mean is there REALLY a couple of different sounds in this update? Without even hearing the new update id be willing to wager i can pretty easily cop any "new tones" with the tones that were previously available in 2.20. Even with all the amps in 2.20 there were only a few different sounds to be had (other than the obvious difference between gainy tones and clean tones), and IRs and cabinets are largely responsible for that. I wont be too quick to judge but there are only so many ways you can bend digital distortion. This is a big reason why the cab sounds/ IRs play such a prominent role in modeling tones.

Same feelings here. Im a tone chaser so im excited to get updated, but this is def just more of the same.

Havent been able to update yet. Curious to hear about you favs over the next few hours.
-
Yeah bud. Just go to top of page. Then software. (it might be support) Then downloads. Youll see three boxes. Helix in the first box. Your OS in the second. Cant remem whats in the 3rd, but i think you'll get it. Scroll down a few inches and hit "get download". This is just the manual way to get to the link thats being provided around here. Edit: oops...Kool beans. Have fun. Let us who havent been able to update know about your 2.30 favs.
-
I unfortunately havent been able to update yet yet due to some software malfunctions, but first thing is first, lets KNOW if the effect is playing back in mono. Probably the simplest way to do this is turn repeats up to 100% and read your meters. Be sure to be monitoring in stereo. Watch your meters. If the effect IS in fact in mono, both the left and right will show repeats of exactly the same volume every time provided your pan pot is centered. Record the track and limit it if you have to.

Don’t update. just re-install 2.21. How helpful would it be, with you going to a jam using new firmware ? I think that would get annoying for the other members if you plan on fiddling with new firmware. I’m sure you don’t want that so it sounds like it would be of no use to you at all anyway, At least not for tonight‘s festivities

Having the same problem. You should fill out a support ticket.

Thats the only way the editor will launch. This is just a computer i use to surf the net. One to take with me out of town. I have the same OS on my main recording boxes at home and they work fine. It a graphics driver issue, or so its being reported that way.
-
Thanks Spikey. Windows 7 ultimate Intel R G33/G31 express chipset family. the driver is from 2009 and 8 15 10 1930 is the version number. Dont see a version number for thye OS

So ive always gotten this mssg on this computer when trying to open the editor. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0wdhe9tagbn9rwr/hsux.PNG?dl=0 My work around was to select "run in 256 colors". Ugly, but no need for the editor to look pretty on this box. With 2.30, now 256 colors doesnt even work. That means the updater wont launch at all for me even though the last one was no problem, making it impossible to update. Im pretty sure open GL 2.0 wont work on this box, but what do i know? Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks. In addition it doesn't even seem as if i can link a simple image file to dropbox from here. Something on my end i bet.

appreciate your interest flying. Well.… As I’m sure you are aware anything below 12% mix, on any and every model Is much closer to “off†than it is 11% or 9% whatever. I often find my self wanting those values when working subtly. With the verb a bit of a different situation but at a decay time of 0 I’d expect to hear almost no decay as where a few of the verbs will still have a quite noticeable decay sometimes lasting for seconds. Sure that’s the nature of some of those verbs but no decay at a zero setting makes more sense imo.
