Bought a Variax!
specracer986 replied to Bangha's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I've read that if you get the right IR, that you can get a decent acoustic sound from your regular rig. I haven't gotten that far with my JTV69, but I hope to soon. I go into Helix and an FRFR, which may be an advantage over a guitar cabinet. Good luck with your new JTV59! -
Old Variax necks vs JTV necks
specracer986 replied to l6podman's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I'm planning on putting a Warmouth neck on my JTV69. Possibly their rosewood neck with an ebony FB. But I think my 69 has a real nice acoustic sound when not plugged in, and I figure the chunky neck might have something to do with that. Plus, even though it's chunkier than I like, it's very playable for me. I just want the 69 to be a first grab guitar, and it'll need a new neck for that. Actually a neck that will cost almost what I paid for the guitar. -
Snapshots are the holy grail, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and unicorns all rolled into one! :D Instead of stepping on two pedals for a solo, (just an example), you setup snapshot two to activate the two pedals and just step on the one button to change snapshots. Each snapshot can have different pedals active or off, and all of the pedal and amp settings can be unique to each snapshot. You can have eight snapshots per patch. Pretty much the sky is the limit.

I do both. I like being able to sit at a desk and take my time making patches through the editor. But, there are certain things, like moving blocks that you need to do on the unit, and I think it's good to feel comfortable making changes on the unit while at band rehearsal. Working directly on the Helix is really easy. Good luck if you take it to a gig the first night you've had it. You have more balls than me. I'm way too obsessive and have to have a fully functioning patch for every song we do.

I've been having a small problem with my G10 Relay that always seems to happen as I'm setting up for rehearsal. I plug the receiver into an outlet with the transmitter in the cradle and go about doing the rest of my set up. Then I take the transmitter and plug it into my guitar and nothing. I usually have to put the transmitter back into the cradle, unplug the receiver, plug it back in, put the transmitter into the guitar and it works. This has happened about 5 or 6 times. I haven't figured out what's causing it. Other than that, I like the freedom it gives me and it works great once it's reset.

I play through a 1000w FRFR, and I've never had the Helix past 10 or 11 o'clock, and we play pretty loud. Going into the front of a tube amp like you are, you have to figure the Helix cranked is acting like an overdrive pedal, all the time. I have the same problem as you, in that my patches sound good some nights and like crap other nights. The louder we play, the muddier my patches get. Then between rehearsals I have to go back in and roll off lows and master volume, and add mids and highs and channel volume, to cut through better. I would never create patches using head phones. The advantage of moving air through an amp is necessary for a patch to cut it in a band situation.

I just wanted to report that the class was a good experience. Some real nice presentations by two Line 6 guys, Andy and Paul. Plus a couple of surprise guests, Elliot Easton from The Cars and Pete Thorn, of YouTube fame. Well worth taking the day off from work!!!

Maybe they want the experience from a live situation before they attempt that. I don't know. But since it's an all day class it would be tough to do a webinar. Plus they are going to have multiple instructors. That would also be hard to replicate online. Sending this out to other cities would mean spending a bunch of money that they would have to charge for. Our entry fee is pretty low. I'm just glad they are doing it here.

Well there's some advantages to living just about everywhere. For So. Cal, besides the sun, bikinis and tacos, we have a presence from most major manufacturers. I'll let you guys know how it was. Maybe you can fly in for the next one!

I signed up for a class next week at Line 6 Headquarters to learn more about programming the Helix. It's an all day class. I'm kind of jazzed about it as I have lots of dumb questions to ask. The only problem is I have to take the day off work, and we're real busy now, so I'll pay for my day of fun at some point. Anyone else going?

You don't want to measure edge to edge. You want to measure the depth of the neck profile from the face of the fret board to the back side of the neck where your hand rubs. I've had my '69 for a few weeks but haven't measured the neck profile yet. I'll do that soon and post what I get. It's a little chunkier than I was hoping for, so I'm interested to see how it measures. I keep a log of all of my guitars so I can compare them.

I'd first go into the cab of each patch and see what the LP and HP filters are set at. EQ'ing the cab can make a big difference. I know some of his patches have amp combo's, which makes it more difficult to do anything with the cab.

I just measured the frets on my JTV-69. They are .060" which is definitely jumbo. I've only had the guitar for about a week and since the mag to modeling switch didn't work, I barely played it, so I hadn't noticed the jumbo frets. I'm kind of dismayed, since I purposely didn't buy a JTV-89 because I thought it was the only one with jumbo frets. It looks like a Warmouth replacement neck is in the future for this guitar. And, yes it will have stainless steel frets, just not jumbos.

I was doing the same thing with mixed results. If it was just shutting an effect off in one snapshot and on in another, it seemed to work. But changing parameters was happening in both snapshots. Doing it on the floor unit is the way to go.

Problem with Modeling/Mag Knob
specracer986 replied to specracer986's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I agree. If a replacement knob was available, I'd be filing the bottom of the shaft on mine, now. But without a replacement knob available, the price of failure is too high. So, cardboard it is. Just out of curiosity, if I had bought a new JTV, would it potentially have had the same problem? -
Problem with Modeling/Mag Knob
specracer986 replied to specracer986's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Thanks. Sounds like my idea to shorten the plastic shaft that protrudes from the bottom of the knob would also work. -
I bought a used JTV69 that was advertised as in mint condition. It is, except there is a problem with switching from the magnetic pickups to the modeling, that the owner didn't disclose. If I take the knob off, I can switch back and forth fine. But with the knob on, it won't switch. I almost feel that the plastic piece that protrudes down from the bottom of the knob, is too long, stopping the switch from being compressed far enough. That's just a theory at this point. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue before I try doing any modifying.

Okay, thanks, I'll try that.

I also bought a JTV 69 today. I pick it up tomorrow. How do I get the Workbench software? I looked under Support / Downloads, but didn't come up with it.
