JTV 59 + Pickups Fishman Fluence
specracer986 replied to Rastan's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Now that I think about it, you're supposed to use the Fishman pots when you install the Fluence pups. So I'm not sure you could use the model selector pot that you need for the JTV to work. -
JTV 59 + Pickups Fishman Fluence
specracer986 replied to Rastan's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I don't know about the wiring for a JTV59. But I can say the the Fishman Fluence Classic pups are great. I've had them in my #1 guitar, for about a year. The second voice, which is supposed to be hotter, doesn't give much change in tone. I also have the Fluence single coils in a Strat, and the second voicing on those is much different from the first voicing. -
That's definitely not what happened to me. I switched to snapshot 3 to do my solo, went to switch back to snapshot 2 for the next verse, but it wouldn't switch back. There were no mode changes.
-
I've had it happen while editing and while just playing without a usb connection. The other night at practice, I had no usb hookup when it froze mid song.
-
I've had my Helix about seven months I think, and I've had it freeze four times that I remember. The last time was a couple nights ago at band practice. I was in the middle of a song and went to change snapshots and it wouldn't change. I still had the original snapshot active, so I was able to finish the song, but I had to do my rhythm parts with my solo snapshot, which was awkward. I then rebooted it and it was fine the rest of the night. I am on 2.11, like you. I think I've had it happen with each version of the firmware. I'm concerned, but I'm still going to gig the Helix. I have too much time invested in it, not to use it.
-
No Variax? Bummer.
-
What I heard was: Out of the Helix/ Into the amp/ amp speaker out/ into the reactive load box/ load box out/ back into the Helix. So just one set of aux send / return being used. I'm not a user of the aux send returns yet, so I don't know if this creates any problem, but it seems to be working for him. Seems like a good way to mate an amp you like with the Helix.

Lost my snapshots, Update can't be worth this..
specracer986 replied to twystedriffs's topic in Helix
I keep checking back to this thread, hoping to see an easy answer for the OP. It's a little scary to do an update, and hope you get all of your hard work back. I thought I lost my Variax settings last update. Luckily I was wrong. Losing all snapshots would be hard to swallow. -
This is what I do with my Yamaha DXR12, which is up on a stand, so the top of the speaker is chest high. Prior to this setup, I had problems. The main thing is getting the speaker off the floor and pointing where you want it to be heard. Then make sure you have enough power and speaker size. We're a loud band, but with this setup I never have the speaker amp over 50%, the Helix is usually under 50%, my guitar is at 7, so I have a little room to adjust as I want to.

No, I haven't messed with the input pad yet. I guess I haven't felt the need to. My problem with the JP15 is with every amp I own, not just my Helix. I have 3 solid state and 3 tube amps besides the Helix. So I'm fairly sure the compression problem is the pickups in the JP15. I need to find the right combination of settings to make it sing, but I've been avoiding dealing with it. I'll get to it soon and quit bitching about it. But your offer to take it off my hands is very kind of you and duly noted. ;) Here's a pic of mine:
-
I'd also like to know what pickups you decided on. About a month ago I was planning on changing mine out of the JP15 and replacing them with a DiMarzio PAF Master set. But I really don't want to change the JP15 if I can help it, so I decided to try to learn and understand the best way to get good tone from this guitar. I don't hear Petrucci with the kind of compression that I'm encountering. I don't have his rig or support system, but I'm going to try to crack the code. I'm pretty certain the ceramic magnets have a lot to do with it, but he seems to make them work. My main problem is I've started playing my Variax almost exclusively, so I'm not putting the effort into figuring out the JP15. A scooped EQ seems to be the first step, but I'm not finding any warmth so far.

I'm a bit obsessive. I have a full set of 128 IR's loaded. But, I don't scroll through all of them when I'm making a patch. I just audition them until I find one that fits the basic feel of the song that I'm creating the patch for. I probably have half of my IR's assigned to different patches.
-
I'm aware of what I need to do. I haven't done it yet because I don't want to lose the last part of the current file name which is the distance of the mic, on all my Ownhammer IR's. I'll seriously look into this before I do another update and get myself pissed off again.
-
All of the above will get you there. I save a model, volume and tone setting in each snapshot. I do it on the floor unit rather than using the editor, that way I'm sure it will stick per snapshot.

I have a JP15 Blueberry Burst. It has the same electronics as your Majesty. It's a fantastic guitar. Kind of like a Ferrari of guitars. I haven't used the piezo very much yet. My only complaint is I seem to get more compression from the pickups than I like or I'm used to. I guess I still need to learn how to dial in the right tone for them. I just know that I'll set the JP down and plug in my other humbucker guitar, with the identical settings, and no more compression problem. So the JP15 definitely needs a different approach for settings. I don't play metal, or shred, so maybe that's my problem? I play heavy classic rock, Zep, VH, ZZ. It kind of bums me out because I love the guitar so much, so I'm not going to give up on it. Good luck and share a good patch when you can.

I figure I should report back that my Variax settings didn't get wiped out by the update. I just had to change one setting in a patch from global to "per preset", and they all showed up in all of my patches. That was a big relief. My IR problem was my own doing since I forgot to take a screen shot of the IR setlist before I updated. I did save my IR setlist, but of course Windows saved it in alphabetical order, so I was screwed. Until I found the screenshot that I did before the previous update, which was 90% accurate. So I got my IR list back into shape and I'm a happy camper again.

I have a '69 JTV. The stock neck was kind of chunky for me and the frets a little tall. I put a Warmouth Strat replacement neck on it and it's now a player, and my main guitar to use with my Helix. I ordered the Standard Thin profile, 6150 SS frets. I had no holes drilled, because my understanding was that two of the predrilled holes would have been off. So I had the luthier that did the install drill the holes. Here's a pic of the new neck. It's mahogany, with a Bubinga fretboard, compound radius, Earvana compensated nut. I had a Variax decal made because I don't like plain headstocks.

Thanks, I hope you're right about the Variax settings. I won't be able to check until Monday. If I get them back it will be a good day. Thanks again.
-
No problems doing the update this time, EXCEPT, I lost all of my Variax settings in all my patches and though I tried, my IR's got all screwed up again. I know this is user error and a live and learn situation. But it's going to take me hours to get my Variax settings back. I thought those settings would stay with the patch when I imported it. Obviously not. I'll probably never get my IR's back to where they were, so I'll just start assigning new ones to each patch as I use them. I pretty pissy right now. I don't mind tweaking. I hate tweaking the same freaking thing over and over. Rant over. Seriously though, I think I'm going to sit out updates from now on until they get the procedure working better than it is. I really had no problems before the update and now I have a ton of work for what, two new amps that I could live without? I guess now the rant is over.

When I first got my Helix, I downloaded a bunch of presets from Customtone, and was surprised at how none of them seemed to sound like the song or artist they were supposed to be emulating. I've bought most all of Glenn DeLaunne's and Freeman's presets and I find all of them to be very usable and a great base to work off of. But, I don't think there's a single one of even the purchased patches that I haven't tweaked to my own needs. When you consider the difference in tone between guitars and playback systems, it would be really unusual to find one that needed no tweaks. So, my suggestion is to use the few that are close to what you are looking for, as a base to refine your own tweaking abilities. I guess I'd rather spend my time learning the ins and outs of the Helix for myself, rather than hoping to find a perfect gem on customtone. Good luck.

I do the same thing, I usually keep my guitar volume at 7, and often adjust it while playing with the band. But I find that certain presets get funky really fast with just a little added input volume. It's just something to keep in mind if a preset sounds good one night and not so good the next.
-
When this has happened to me, I usually find that I have turned the volume up on my guitar higher than I had it when I put together the patch, and I'm now introducing more OD than the patch can handle cleanly. I've gotten to paying strict attention to where I keep my guitar volume both when making patches and when playing with the band, especially if the patch has a fair amount of distortion to it, so I maintain the same tone I was originally looking for.

So... Line 6 Litigator inspired by boutique mid-gain amps - DISCUSS ! :)
specracer986 replied to d0stenning's topic in Helix
Similar but not the same, IMO. Comparing one amp with an OD and "all pretty much at their default settings", but the bass rolled off on one, isn't a real accurate comparison. I actually wasn't real excited with the litigator. I may need to spend more time with it, but it didn't do much for me when I first tried it. -
Okay; I was able to update just the editor, and all is well. This is not my first update, so I should have known better, but I think the release notes could be a little less cryptic. Thanks for the help.
-
Just to clarify what I did originally, I used the Line 6 Updater to load 2.10. I did a global reset. The floor unit seems to have updated fine. It's the editor that's wonky. I'll try updating the editor in a while when I'm in my office. Thanks for the help.
