  1. What DD said! I'm another one who used Pod HD500 for several years. It sounded pretty decent with the Line 6 DT25 combo amp, but when I had to use it direct with a band leader that insisted we all use in-ear monitors and didn't want amps on the stage, I was never satisfied with my tones. The Helix changed all that... drastically! The digital modeling is significantly more advanced on Helix and you'll notice the difference immediately. Sounds great direct or in an FRFR powered speaker (though you will have to tweak separate patches for each). So I'd say GO FOR IT!
  2. I don't think there's any way to remove the cab from an amp+cab block. I'd just delete it and replace it with an amp block. You'd want to change the parameters for whatever real cab you plan to use anyway.
  3. You'd have to sing everything you play (though he doesn't always do that). Sorry, I'm not a guy who tries to emulate other people's sounds (though I have no problem with those that do). Saw Kurt play a trio gig once when I was in NYC. He was great!
  4. Hi, peeps! I haven't posted here in a long time, though I have been lurking. So I must have something to say, right? Well, I never updated to firmware 2.60; just wasn't interested enough in what it had to offer. But when I heard about the new tuners in 2.70, I had to do it... and it was totally worthwhile! Prior to this, I was using one of those clip-on tuners, just because I had to be able to tune quickly at gigs and couldn't with the existing Helix tuner. Now I can ditch that tiny piece of gear; hooray! I also have to voice my appreciation of how much easier upgrading the Helix has become. The very first time I upgraded, I lost a bunch of my user presets and though I haven't had any problems with the procedure since, I still have had PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) over upgrading ever since. I was still nervous about installing v.2.70, but now I think I'm cured! Didn't have to backup anything and everything was all there, even the third party IRs! One more thing: I thoroughly enjoyed the notes about the new tuners in this firmware. It was like Line 6 days of yore when George Von Wagner wrote hilarious user manuals that I would reread after I had learned everything I needed to about the product just for some laughs. So, THANK YOU yet again, Line 6!
  5. Same here! The Minotaur has been my most valuable discovery in Helix since day one.
  6. That could be a mistake. For example, I liked the Tube Screamer in my M13 more than the one in my Helix. I only had a couple of minutes of playing time after the update today, but I did compare them and I still like the Legacy version better. Who knows how many of these Legacy duplicates might turn out to be your preference?! It's worth checking out.
  7. Well, I got the HX Edit 2.51 installed, but I still can't open my download of 2.50 firmware. Frustrated and giving up for today, I've already been at this for hours and I have to get ready and leave for a two show tour in CA tomorrow morning. Ugh!
  8. Every time I try to install HX Edit 2.51, I get a message: "error opening file for writing, click abort to stop installation." I even deleted the Line 6 installer and the 2.50 firmware (which I had installed before the editor) and I'm still getting that same message. And yes, I selected the correct version of Windows. ???
  9. Just keep getting a message that Windows can't open this file. This never happened with previous updates. I'm running Windows 7. Any ideas?
  10. I've often felt that Line 6 abandoned some great features from older products when they released newer ones. Not true anymore! I'm excited that all my favorite effects from my Vetta and my M13 will now be in my Helix. Excellent news!
  11. It's pretty damn hard to do with your hand. At first I thought it was hard to switch with your foot too, but it was just a matter of getting used to it. It'll still be difficult if you're on high shag carpeting.
  12. I've owned a Mesa Mark IIc and a Mark III. They were fairly similar in sound, but the Mark III is generally brighter. Even after I exchanged the stock EV speaker with the same Celestion that was in the Mark II, it was brighter. I've never owned a Mark IV, but I've used rented ones on a few gigs and even after a half hour of tweaking, I couldn't get it to sound much like the IIc or the III, at least not the lead channel. It's a different beast. The IIc and the III had some push/pull tone knobs and two of them were mid boosts, one voiced to accentuate low to mid midrange and the other for higher midrange frequencies. That was the secret ingredient to that great lead tone that I loved. And why I was slightly disappointed that the Mark IV was chosen instead of those previous Mesa Mark models. The IIc was my favorite, so yes, I'd welcome a model of it!
  13. You'd have to set the time parameter in every preset, but if you want all the presets to respond to a tempo you just tapped in, you can set that up in Global Settings.
  14. I'm on board with that train! Out of all the tube amps I've had over the past 40 years, my favorites were a Mark IIc+ combo and a Bogner Ecstasy head.
  15. If they did add another Marshall, my vote goes to the DSL. Best lead sound I've heard from a Marshall, probably because of the uncluttered tone stack. But I'm fine with the amps we already have. That would make me happy! LOL!
  16. Put it after the cab or even between the amp and cab (it's a subtle difference) if you don't want it to clean the amp up. I like to have it before reverbs, delays and modulations (though sometimes I'll make an exception with something like a phase shifter). And I find "logarhythmic" to be the only useful way to set it, but then again, I mostly use it for volume swells.
  17. I don't find it to have changed with the recent update; it operates as weirdly as it did in previous firmwares. Three taps seems to be the magic number for me.
  18. You think?! ;) I use both, but truth be told, I use stock HX cabs more frequently than third party IRs. And I think if Line 6 ever gives us the ability to virtually move mic models across the speaker rather than away from it, I might not feel the need to use anything but the stock cabs.
  19. I've found that if you tap 2 or 3 times, it works. More than that, you get weirdness, like half the tempo you wanted or at least something much slower. I've gotten used to it at this point and I tap 3 times, but I've never seen a tap tempo behave like this before.
  20. I do too; one of my favorite models in Helix! Great for smoothing out the midrange in front of a medium/high gain amp. For me, the only high gain amp that doesn't need a distortion/overdrive pedal in front is the Archetype Lead. The new Trainwreck might also fit the bill but I need to work with it more. Before I "went digital," the only distortion pedal I ever used (once in a while) was a Rat (and the Helix model does it justice for the most part). The tube amps I used (Mesa/Boogie, Bogner) had great preamp distortion and I generally didn't need any "dirt" pedals. It's a little different with Helix. But that's worked out fine, especially with my "go to" lead sound fixer, the Minotaur!
  21. Ha, ha! Classic! I saw that film when it first came out in the theaters with a buddy/band-mate of mine and he ended up becoming Spinal Tap's keyboard player a few years later. And that led to him becoming the music director/producer of all of the Christopher Guest (Nigel) movies. "This is Spinal Tap" has got to be the most quotable musician's movie in history!
  22. You'd change your mind if you ever played in an airplane hangar. I tour with a band that plays a lot of events for the military and sometimes the venue is a hangar. I first started appreciating isolating IEMs when I realized that you can hear a decent sounding mix in a room that sounds like crap. What the crowd hears is another story, but there's no accounting for the venues some folks choose to have a live band play in.
  23. Been there more times than I'd care to admit.
