  1. I agree with PierM that the way a guitar "feels" in your hands is the most important thing for me. I also have guitars of varying price ranges, but only because they "felt" good. You can tell as soon as you put your hands on it if it is good or not. Yes, sometimes all it needs is a change of strings and a good setup, but it still needs that feel. That's why I can never understand why guitar places don't take the time to at least do a basic setup and maybe change the strings. So many times I have picked up a guitar at places like Guitar Center, Sam Ashe, etc, and the strings were way off the neck and were rusty.... I know it's silly, but it drives me crazy! (or maybe, I should be happy because now I have more money in my pocket :))
  2. this may be completely off base, but R2DR2 (or something like that, sorry) has posted about a problem with the treble/tweeter something not working correctly in some cases. Maybe the treble trim? You could do a search for that or just look in the Power Cab section. He talks about it a lot. Maybe that is it or maybe that was only for the PC212+....sorry to be so vague! And I'm sure you have tried each PC by themselves without being hooked to each other? are you connecting them with the l6link? Good luck finding it. Please post what you find!
  3. that was an interesting question... espeicially since I don't have the helix native. Thanks for posting the answer.
  4. would the impedance on the guitar input make a difference. That is the classic problem when the gate is too hot, but you said you are not using a gate, so maybe the guitar input impedance is too low along with having the pad on.
  5. I also use the PC in Flat, LF Raw mode. I do not bypass the cabs and mics in the helix.
  6. Have you tried the 4 cable method? I don't use that, but from my understanding, the whole point of that is to keep your amps sound. That may help.
  7. The Wrightsville Beach band was called Fallen Angels. The bassist is Taylor Lee. I could not find any recent videos of him, but they were amazing! Loved the way he chorded, double stopped, etc.... beautiful! And a young guy at that :) (Damn KIDS :) )
  8. I have the helix floor, but I had the same problem. I don't remember exactly, but I believe it had something to do with the touch capacity(probably wrong word, sorry)... but if I just touched the button, not click it, it would change the light and then the settings were reversed (or seemed to be reversed, because the drive would be at max with the light off). Try just touching the button to select it... or touch it a few times.... (reading that sounds bad :), but I'm serious :))
  9. Saw a local Jazz trio in Wrightsville Beach, NC a month ago (bass, sax, drums). Very full sound, the bassist was the best musician I have ever heard, much less seen. The way he combined chording and noting the bass was amazing... it sounded like they had a fender rhoads (sp?) playing with them. So the point is that maybe the bass can adjust somethings as well, maybe incorporate chording at times, especially during the guitar solo's!
  10. you can also play with the Stereo Width setting on the PC.... amazing how well it works.
  11. Very interesting topic, and (as usual) way over my head :). I am assuming the purpose of this is to match a guitar tone to somebody else's tone. From my understanding, this would not affect the "dirtiness/cleaness" of the tone, but the "brightness/dullness" of the tone. Is that a correct assumption?
  12. Going back to your list, you may find that you are close to what you want. For example, your reverbs or delays could be combined where you have a snapshot or stomp change the delay settings so the act like two or more stomps. Since you like one amp,cab that is the best scenario for having presets that are close but change a few things. I found that I will have a basic amp cab drives reverb delay preaet then add different effects that would typically not be used together. Not what you asked for, but maybe what you really want. Good luck. You really can't go wrong.
  13. You probably thought of this but you could sort of have what you want, just make them on different presets. I know is not the same but if you think about it, it could be done. There are some effects that you would not use together. Put those on a different presets. Your amp could be the same for both presets. Or several presets. Put your basic stuff in each preaet then add the odd things. For example, have one preaet with a trem, the other would be the same but have a chorus.
  14. not to beat a dead horse, however... my setup is largely like what it would be on stage. The PC's would be what I hear on stage and the ZLX's is the FOH. Unless I am missing something, and if I am, I really would like to understand. The way I have it setup now, I can get something I like through the PC's, and then check to see what it would sound like through the FOH... We use the Behringer for our mixer. Are you saying the PC112+ stacked on the PC212+ could cause phase issues? I don't think I've heard any....
  15. Thats cool.... I use stomp mode because it just gives you more buttons. I use mine sort of like a pedal board. I have stomps that turn some things on/off, some are set to multiple controls.... I have snapshots that turn things on and off that I didn't have room for in stomp. I also use the snapshots to change rev and delay settings. Helix is great in that you can really make it work the way you want it. For example, I don't do the preset per song thing, however, I can definitely see how that would be great in certain situations. I was never good enough (focused enough?) to learn the songs exactly. I like to get the gist of it but adapt it to what I'm doing. I always appreciate the talent to get things just right... the sound, the feel, etc.
  16. Oh, good to see the floor is still not that far for you. It keeps getting further and further for me every day :) I usually only use one or two presets during a gig. I've toyed around with how I arrange my presets/setlists. I have one I call amps. I use that to store my presets I like/use for safe keeping. I keep that sorted by amps. I thought about having a setlist for my les paul and one for my tele/strat.... however, the bending down thing, I put the presets all in one setlist and use the first few banks for tele, next few banks for les paul. So in my case, i would not have to bank up/down a bunch to get to the "Setlist Change" preset. I just thought it would be nice to be able to go anywhere (any setlist) using the peddles. I'll have to get a midi cable and try your suggestion. Thanks again!
  17. I tried last night... I probably missed it, but command center would only let me pick a preset in the current setlist. Would be great if I am wrong.
  18. awesome.... guess i need to get over my fear of midi :)
  19. I would love to be able to select a preset from another setlist... or just go to another setlist by hitting a stomp button. Is there something like that available? I was thinking about trying something in the command center... if I can assign a button to a preset in another setlist, then maybe I can create a preset that has a preset from each setlist... then clicking on that would take me to that setlist. Going to try that tonight. Would love to know if anyone else has done this. Thanks.
  20. Thanks for the reply. Yes, agree and understand the subjectivity of all of this. This is my setup for when I'm at home. I have broken it down to be as simple as possible. Have used headphones, can't remember which ones they were, but they were good ones ( I know, :),...) they were horrible coming out of the helix. major high cuts helped... but even then the ampeg just sounded best. Never thought of the setup as Wonky :).... interesting to hear that. works for me though... I guess I just like the ampeg.... and I do! Thanks!
  21. Sorry if this is the wrong place, but even with the new cabs, the only one that sounds good for my setup is the ampeg 1x15 (legacy). For reference, I have a Helix floor, running l6link to PC212+ then from that to PC112+ on top. I also have a behringer XR18 with 2 EV ZLX 112s and connect to this through the XLR L and R. The PC's are set to LFLR Raw. (though I have tried other combinations and it makes no difference). ALL the other cab (even new ones) sound harsh, brittle, metalic, no warmth. I have tried it just the PC's, just the ZLX's, a blend of both. Also with Tele, strat, les paul, and a yamaha hollow body with soapbox pu's. it doesn't matter. I have spent hours (many many hours) playing with the high/low cuts on the cabs and on eq's at the end of the chain... they help somewhat, but nothing sounds like the ampeg 1x15. It also doesn't matter the amp used. I have used many! I have download other's presets and templates... same thing. the latest I tried was last night with Jason Sadites new templates. I'm ok, because I truly love what I am getting with the ampeg 1x15.... it just baffles me! I know you can't expect your sounds to sound close to what you see on youtube, but it is just weird to me. Has anyone else had this issue?
  22. Recording Magazine Resources: Capturing the Cab Mics and Miking For those like me that don't know this.... the above is a good start! " First, the further you are from the cabinet, the more room tone you’ll get. The direct sound of the cabinet will be less bassy and have softer highs. The closer you are, the more direct cabinet sound you’ll get, with added proximity effect down low plus piercing highs. Second, the closer you are to the center of the speaker cone, the brighter and more direct the sound will be. As you move towards the edge of the cone, the sound will get darker. Third—on-axis vs. off-axis. This comparison refers to the angle at which the mic is placed in relation to the sound source. So, let’s say you have that SM57 placed at a 45 degree angle against the grille of the cab. That is 45 degrees off-axis. If you place it pointing straight towards the cab, that’s on-axis. Not surprisingly, on-axis gives your more treble and more punch. Off-axis gives a bassier, darker and warmer tone." and much more!
  23. Agree mix placement knowledge is very important! Can someone point me to a good reference on mix placement principles, etc. I know I can Google and I also realize trial and error is the best learning tool! However, it would be nice to have some basic knowledge before all the testing. For example, last night I used one of my patches and made a snapshot of the existing cab and one for the new cab. When on the new cab snapshot, I would use pedal edit to change the parameters of the speaker while I played. That was helpful and will be my learning tool. I can see it will take a while because my ears are not what they used to be. So again any good references would be much appreciated.... Basic stuff like, move the mic out to get rid of the base, or what the 45axis is supposed to do. I'm also sure I'm not the only one that needs this. Thanks
