Installing an Earvana nut on a JTV69
Leftzilla replied to ajktsb's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I have a had very good luck with the Earvana on my Epiphone Flying V and my Kramer pacer custom. I have not put them on my JTV59 or JTV89F as those two guitars have very good intonation. -
Well we have two albums out now and you can see our artwork on our website www.elephantsofscotland.com

That is exactly how I use my HD500x - without an amp. I go directly to the PA with both My Bands. Recently played RosFest through a major league house system and got many complements on my tone. I was onstage with a JTV89F with my band Elephants of Scotland. Original progressive rock where in some instances I change through 5 different guitar emulations via via the HD500x

Great! Thank you all for your responses!

I have a gig coming up at RosFest in Gettysburg PA. I am currently using an HD500x with some custom patches and setlists. The original patches were from an HD500 and I would like to back up the HD500x setlists to the HD500 as a back up. Anybody know of an efficient way of doing this?

What Do You Use Your Jtv For?
Leftzilla replied to the29band's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I have both a JTV59 and a JTV89F. I am currently a member of an 80s cover band and a original progressive band. I use both guitars extensively live (The 59 for the 80s band and the 89F for the prog band). The prog band (Elephants of Scotland) will be releasing our second Album "Execute and Breathe" tomorrow April 1st. This album was recorded exclusively with the 89F. Our first Album "Homeaway from Home" was recorded exclusively with the 59. I run via VDI into an HD500X for the prog band and will switch between 7 different gtr emulations, 2 detunes, 4 amps and a bazillion effects. The 80s band I run wireless and switch between 3-4 guitar emulations (Mainly Les Paul, Fender and acoustic). I also had a one man show which I used a VAX700 and VAC700 and multiple detunes. -
I'm About Fed Up With This Variax!
Leftzilla replied to Geamala's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Actaually from what I remember version 2.01 overwrites the JTV 89 pickup emulations stored in the custom bank. You will need to reinstall those emulations. -

Oleus, the only reasons I held the 59 at 1.9 was a) I could b) the 4th position strat emulation of 1.9 fits better with my 80s band c) the 2.0 emulation with my prog band is a better fit with 89f. Again these are all opinions that just happen to be mine. I would say the greatest asset or curse of line6 equipment (this includes the POD series) is the amount of flexibility and choices the player is given. Obviously in this thread alone just with vax700 and jtvs there are players that prefer the 700 for various reasons that are well documented and others that prefer the jtv. I think you will find that whatever your choice its a very large menu to choose from

Diff Between 69 And 59 Model Sound
Leftzilla replied to archisc's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I have a 59 and 89f and there are subtle differences between the two that I personally think is more due to the physical differences than say graphtec vs lr baggs piezos. Recorded modeling is virtually indistinguishable between the two. -
As an owner of a vax700, vac700, jtv59 and jtv89f I can say that I absolutely loved my vax700 but the jtv59 is much nicer looking guitar and plays better. The jtv89 as far as looks is very compara le but the floyd rose is a much better whammy system. For acoustic sounds the vac700 is still king but I do preferthe acoustic modeling in the jtv series (though I have held my 59 at 1.9 and updated the 89f to 2.0) I also have had flawless working units on each guitar. Obviously the 700 lovers have their reasons, and it is still a great instrument, but the communication and flexibility between the hd500 and jtv series is superior to that of the vax700.

Would You Own More Than 1 Jtv?
Leftzilla replied to pugdealer's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Well since I own a 59 and an 89F I would say yes. These really are two different guitars in feel and there are subtle differences in the sounds. I also have two different bands, one an 80s cover band the other an original Prog band. The 59 is better suited for the 80s band running the 1.9 firmware while the 89F is perfect for the prog band runnin 2.0 firmware. -
I am not sure that going into the effect return would give you the results you want even if the spider had one. Joel Brown may be absolutely right, and it has been a long time since I have used a guitar amp, but I still think the EQ bias of the guitar amp speaker itself wont match the PA. But like I said I could be wrong on this. I personally use a 50 watt behringer kybd amp (180 bucks) to monitor my sound on stage or fold back through the bands monitor system. I run the sound for my band so I can give myself custom monitor mix if I need to. I am not sure what options you have in that department. Have you ever gotten a good sound running the PODHD into the Spider? Another option would be running the PODHD into the spider using the Amplifier output mode (I apologise I don't know the mode name for going into a guitar amp) and see if you get a sound that you like from the Spider and then mike it. But all of the presets that sound good in the spider will probably not sound so hot when you record or send direct to the PA. Hope this helps.

If you want to send direct to the pa and monitor onstage then you will need to use a full range amp such as a keyboard amp. The eq outputs for a PA should be studio direct which will not sound good when sent to a guitar amp. If you set up for your amp to sound good then you should just mike it.

Glad to hear things went so well. I too went to the Line 6 floor boards to simplify live setup as and lugging equipment. I have been using an HD500 now HD500x directly through the PA for my cover band for years now. When I am not running the sound for the band from stage I have also gotten a lot of compliments from venue sound guys on the sound and simpicity of setup. I have another project which is an original prog band where the entire guitar sound was recorded from the HD500. The great thing about it I don't have to worry at all about recreating my sound live.

I have both a JTV 59 and an 89F. Prior to updating the 89F to 2.0, my bands swore up and down the 89F sounded much better than the 59. I can only say that it is probably a visual bias as I recorded both guitars with the same modeling and played it back to them and they couldn't tell the difference or chose the 59 as the "better" sounding guitar There are definite physical differences which affect the sounds subtley (or my perception of the sound)but there has also been a lot of discussion how the LR Bags piezos sound different than the graphtech piezos. Again when recording the same models it is difficult if not impossible to tell the two apart.

Very nicely done, great patches for the guitar

Thank you Charlie Watt I did not know that.

Bass Octave Just On Lowest Pitched Note In Chord
Leftzilla replied to MMayerwieser's topic in POD HD
You could do a hybrid mix of the Magnetic Pickups and a variax model where all of the strings except for the low E and A are muted and then force the pickups through one amp and the variax through another with the octaver. Or detune the variax model low e and a an octave down. -
VDI Connected to a POD will power the guitar. Battery life is much longer than the original VAX 700 and I have had one last through two nights of gigging and not go below the second indicator light. The original Variaxes used the TRS cable which is actually a stereo quarter inch with the provided switching box bertween quarter inch and XLR outputs (I am forgetting what is was called at the moment) and I am not sure the JTV will power that way and I would not try it unless it specifically says so. If you are that worried about it I would buy a second battery just in case instead and keep it charged. Even if the models fail for some reason the pickups will still work. Off the top of my head I can't comment on the stock strings.

Which Jtv And Why?
Leftzilla replied to radatats's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I would agree that the 89F is probably the best fit for you. I live in VT and of course there isn't someplace I can go and find aJTV to try. I have both a 59 and an 89F that I bought blind (Couldn't try them out prior) and was very happy with each. The 89F is definitely my prog band guitar while the 59 works very well for my 80s cover band. -
Also try downloading some of the custom tone patches that have descriptions of what type of sound you are looking for. Most of the presets patches are basically to show off effect capability and are not that useful nor sound all that good. Also the previous posts are defintiely something you want to verify also.

I hear you Don. AX212, POD XTLIve, POD X3 Live (2), VAX700, VAC 700, POD HD500 (2), JTV59, JTV89F and POD HD500X, and looking at the L2M.

I use the FX loop to get a 3db boost for soloing and it works extremely well, in some of my patches I also assign a very subtle phase shifter to the same button to liven up the solo even more.
