JTV-89F - Is it worth getting?
Leftzilla replied to DragonNZ's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I purchased one as soon as they were available (89F) and it is definitely my favorite guitar now (I have a 59 also), plays and sounds fantastic. -
Either should work fine

Well support forums tend to be full of people having problems, its the nature of the beast. I initially only ran my amplify as a monitor for my HD500X and blutoothed backing tracks and it worked flawlessly. I now am actually using the unit as intended and haven't run in to the problems described here. That is not to say that I might in the future, but the wifi or blutooth interference is a valid point. There are so many blutooth enabled devices out there, my tablet has 7 different devices as options for pairing alone including Amplifi. If all of these were in the same room and scanning I could see where a controller could lose connection.

snhirsch, what type of sounds are you trying to emulate? I use both a JTV59 and JTV89F and have been very happy with the tones I am getting. The 59 gets used for my 80s cover band while the 89F gets used for an original prog band for both live and recordings. I use the 59 with a wireless setup and the 89F with a VDI (Needed to since I change guitars up to 5 times within some songs)

Yeah pianoguy pretty much nailed everything you need to be worried about, especially the monitoring situation. After one particular club experience my band has gone all in ear. We even bring it when we know there is a PA because we have been shocked to many times by the crappy monitoring situations we have encountered.

I would check out the thread that's in this forum about the best patches people have developed for the HD500 and give those a listen to show the capability of the HD500. Like everybody else here said the stock patches are there for more show off the edge of the envelope than anything actually useful. From what I understand there is a new set of patches with the latest update that are supposed to be pretty spectacular

Great thread Great Playing great sounds!

Ah yes the Bass players son gave me those so I figured I better use them somehow

Not famous but here is my double endorsement: Can't see the HD500X in the first pic but its there.

Brand New JTV89f - Dive bombing issue
Leftzilla replied to pangwin61's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I have never had this issue with my 89F but not knowing how deep of a divebomb you are doing it may not be generating the problem you are having. My VAX 700 did pretty well with this also but I definitely had to get locking tuners. I would imagine the 69 with locking tuners should do pretty well also. -
Another thing to consider especially if you are going to do the run direct route and will allow you to monitor yourself are the ART or Rolls Personal monitor systems which are basically a headphone amp where you give it a signal which is then sent to the board and then you can have a monitor send return from the board and you have control over headphone volume and mix between your guitar signal and the monitor feed from the board. Both of my current bands are migrating to this type of system. There are some things to get used to such as unless you invest in a wireless in ear system you are going to be locked to your position, but if you don't run your guitar wireless whats the difference? I run my JTVs into my hd500x which then runs direct to the bands personal PA and any venue's PA system. I have also used FRFR amps such as keyboard amps and the Ampilifi 75 onstage for monitoring my guitar signal. We have been lucky that most house PAs that we have worked with have good monitor systems. However we have run in to few that caused us to consider the in Ear Monitor situation. This way its now an intergral part of our core live PA and practice space. That way when we show up we don't have to worry at all about whether a place has a crappy or non existent monitor system

As far as I can tell my patches sound the same, and I compared rehearsal recordings from last night to album recordings of my HD500X last year

As Zap stated they charged for model packs on the XT at the same price point. Maybe I am reading more negativity into your post than you intended but claiming Line 6 is treating you like a second class citizen because they updated the current production line first? I could see your point if they weren't going to update the HD500 series at all but a two week wait doesn't seem that bad and allows the the X community to find any bugs in the build.

Thank you for posting!

I was wondering when that would pop up!

That would be the first place I start. Also there is a Kings of Leon patch that gets pretty close and you should be able to nail it with some tweaking.

Acoustic guitar / how do you get a good tone thru an amp?
Leftzilla replied to wilson69978's topic in POD HD
I run direct to the board but I also have used a small Behringer Keyboard Amp in the past for stage monitoring and rehearsal. Standard guitar amps have a very focused eq, which doesn't do well with non electric guitar sounds. But there has been a the explosion of acoustic (only) guitar amps. The nice thing about the FRFR approach is that everything, Electric Pickups, Acoustic Guitars and Variax emulations all sound good. -
Variax guitar worth it?
Leftzilla replied to idexo's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I can't comment on the VAX 300 but I do still own a VAX 700 along with a JTV 59 and JTV89F. I prefer the modeling on the JTV's but there are also user's on these forums that still prefer the VAX 700. That aside there is a definite advantage with the JTV and the magnetic pickups (which the newest Variax with the Yamaha Body also has) along with current support which the VAX 300 would not have. I would suggest not going for the VAX 300 and either take advantage of interest free financing and going for the newer generation Variax. -
This is an always tough comparison when just starting out (meaning you do not own either board) and then trying to decide which one you want. I personally have and HD500X and have no interest in the Firehawk because I would lose capability (Specfically Dual amp some of the Advanced controls). There are conversations within these forums about how Difficult the HD500X is to use or get good sounds out of. I personally do not feel that way but the Firehawk may be simpler in this fashion as it is a cross between the Amplifi FX100 and POD HD series. So if I were you I would go and play with all 3 of these floorboards and see which one you like the best.

The INuke is certainly light and has plenty of power and is a good price range you may find want to look elsewhere for something a little more portable such as one of the stomp pedals that are actually power amps that are available. Don't get me wrong I use an INuke 3000 to power my bands PA where I send my HD500X directly to the board and it works very well.

Help with mag pickup hum
Leftzilla replied to Nos402's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Thanks for the video Jandrio good information. Nos402, I know what you mean about wondering of the noise got worse or is it just you are so used to having none with the modeling engaged. I have a JTV59 and and 89F. I only use modeling with the 59 but I do use the mag pickups in the 89F quite a bit. I remember reharsing in my basement with the band and hearing a slight buzz and thinking it was my bass player, however it was me using the mags on the 89F which at the time I felt was pretty loud, specifically because I was so used to how quiet the guitar was in modeling mode. Just to make sure I wasn't going crazy I grabbed my 78 Gibson the Paul and the level of hum was pretty much the same. The videos Jandrio posted though are excellent guides for trouble shooting and reducing hum.
