I go out the Line 6 Link to an L2 speaker and then run XLR to the mixer. The big knob is set to only change the volume to the L2 speaker, so that I can't mess up the mix by changing my stage volume. -Max

When mine stopped working the same way, I put in a ticket and returned it to Line 6 for repair. The turnaround was only 6 days from shipping until it arrived back on my doorstep. I haven't had any issues since and the guys at Line 6 were absolutely amazing for customer support. -Max

If you are using the little cable that comes with computer interface, stop now. You should have a real VDI cable and they are as long as typical 1/4 inch guitar cable. The real VDI cable has the proper connector so it doesn't damage the connector on the guitar, for the same reasons don't use a regular CAT 5 cable either. -Max

I have had the opposite experience as you. I can get a great tone by just putting a Plexi amp and couple of speaker cabs in parallel and not changing anything other than low and high cuts on the cabinets. I have never even listened to any of the built in presets, they are not made for my amplification rig and guitars in mind so I don't expect them to work with my stuff that well. I play in a band and just create my own presets for the tones I need for the songs we play. -Max

Our other guitarist in our band compared QSC K series to the Line 6 L series speakers and he thought the Line 6 speakers sounded better. I think he was testing them as keyboard amps however, so you mileage may vary. -Max

I have been using some Ownhammer IRs, I got the VOX 2 X 12 cab, A Fender Deluxe, and a Marshall 4 X 12 checkerboard cab. I like to use two IRs in parallel. One with a SM-57 and another with one of the ribbon type mics. I think it sounds huge when you mix two cabs with different mics like that. I have to admit I didn't even use the built in cabs much, I was excited to try some IRs using some of my favorite speakers. -Max

With the addition of snapshots the Helix is now the perfect gigging rig for me. -Max

My wife uses an L3 and my old HD500 for Bass. The L3 works good for stage volume but you need to be going into the P.A. also to really fill a room. -Max

Did the OP compare it with the real thing or the way it was modeled in the Zoom G5? -Max

Judging by the fact that sales exceeded Line 6 expectations pretty much says that the product is competing very well in the market. -Max

I had my second gig with me Helix this weekend and I had zero issues. It sounded great and never glitched once. This gig I used all of my own presets that I created, the first gig I used tweaked Glenn D patches (I only had a few days after getting the Helix before that gig). -Max

I have been using a L2m for a couple of years now (first with the HD500 and now with Helix). I put it on a tripod speaker stand behind me set up high enough so the tweeter isn't aimed at my head and it sounds great to me. -Max

I love my JTV-59 it fits my hands perfect. I have always preferred Les Paul and SG guitars and the JTV-59 neck feels like Gibson 60s neck to me. Even if using the VDI cable with the Helix you can run both the Magnetic pickups and the JTV modeled guitars at the same time or set them up on separate signal chains and switch back and forth (you won;t need a separate 1/4 inch connection). -Max

If You Transitioned from HD500 to Helix, Have You Noticed...?
maxnew40 replied to DunedinDragon's topic in Helix
Yes, I used to struggle getting the Plexi to sound good to me with the HD500. With Helix I made a few minor adjustments and am loving the Plexi (it is a good choice for a lot of the 70s hard rock we play). -Max -
I play in a 60s and 70s rock cover band and the Helix already has all the classic amps I need for the genre I play. I mostly use 2 -3 different amps, a Fender Twin, some version of a Marshall (usually plexi), and an AC30. -Max

Low and high cut on the cabs or IRs is used by many when going into FRFR speaker. Seems like 75 - 100 for the low cut is common, and for high cut just listen for high end harshness and keep going down until it gets better (too low and it will sound dull). -Max

The there is also the fact that many Leslie cab tones from different bands sound very different to me. For example I think of Leslie tones from the Badfinger song No Matter what, versus the sound that Pat Travers had on the live go for what you know record (that don't sounds much like an organ like the Badfinger song does). Then there was this Canadian band Wireless that had some excellent Leslie tones that sounds like an organ in many places. It is the Badfinger and Wireless tones that I would like to get, but I haven't really tried yet (those sounds have this organic sound that no Leslie simulator that doesn't have an actual rotating speaker can seem emulate that well). -Max

I didn't try to get anything that subtle on the Leslie when I was playing with it (plus my tone was way brighter than that). -Max

Did it reset all of the globals? I found that previous updates reset all the global parameters on my unit. -Max

What I did that I think sounds pretty good is to put an amp block and then a cab or IR and drag it down to 1B and then put another cab or IR on 1A (signal splits after amp to two cabs). Then on path 1B put the leslie and set up switch so that it turns off the cab and turns on the Leslie. I am not sure how authentic it sounds but I sure thought it sounded good to my old ears. -Max

The Ownhammer sounded smoother to me, I wonder if the IR he chose used a warmer mic like a ribbon. -Max

The term "Stupid Fun" was used to describe the next Helix FW update, so I imagine it will be more than just an editor update to a non-beta version. -Max

I used to run my HD500 into the power amp of a spydervalve it always sounded pretty good. These days I use Line6 L2 speakers. -Max

Overdrive/distortion tones not sounding good at all
maxnew40 replied to m6stringtosh's topic in Helix
The first thing I thought when the OP described the tone is that he was using an amp only with no speaker cab block. Doing that would give just the sort of sound he described. -Max -
I notice that a lot of complaints about the tuner only mention the green color and fail to mention the more important brackets that appear when the string is in tune. Is it possible that some of these users are failing to notice the brackets and therefore are not using the tuner correctly? -Max
