I'm sure that problem is caused by the magnetic field of a too close pickup. You should be able to hear it even without any amplification.2 points

To address Spikey's topic's question, I can definitely see combining an HX Effects and a Quad Cortex. An abundance of riches. For me though it goes against my core effort to reduce floor real estate and minimize connections and devices. Combining the two would be even more compelling for owners of Variax guitars and PowerCab cabs if the HX Effects had Variax and/or PowerCab connectivity so you could take your Line6 "peripherals" with you. The Quad Cortex definitely got a lot of things right and some not so much. The Neural capture is a big selling point. This is still an immature product but looks like it holds a lot of promise. They have quite a ways to go to catch up to the Helix in some areas but I could see myself getting one depending on what they deliver in upcoming updates. Hasn't quite moved me off the Helix yet though. In summary I am intrigued but still on the fence, gonna wait a while to see how things develop. Some thoughts/observations regarding the Quad Cortex as they pertain to switching or adding one to my current setup. Wi-Fi connectivity for backups, firmware updates, and capture/preset sharing. Ability to use at least proprietary Neural plugins No integration with a DAW plugin like Native yet. Native still represents a big Line6 advantage but the Quad Cortex's ability to use Neural plugins may point to some interesting linkage from live gigging to recording, device to desktop, in the future. A good amount of processing power providing a lot of future potential Where is a PC/Mac based editor? Being able to use a tablet or phone to edit(editing on these is still quite limited from what I understand) is great but I would also want a PC/Mac editor. As per the video posted above, unless the reviewer missed it, there appears to be no global option to either assign Ins/Outs. The Quad Cortex appears to automatically recognize what is plugged in to its inputs and outputs. Maybe they could have the ability to auto-recognize what is plugged in and adjust accordingly, with an option to manually override at the global and preset level. Neural already appears to have some "wizards" to help with connectivity and usage, particularly for setting up the Neural captures and this might be extended to for example 4CM or 7CM or other more complex setups. Helpful to new users. Love the touchscreen Quad has ability to change mic placement across the speaker from cap to cone(not just distance) although axis adjustment would be good to have as well Time will tell if the new footswitch/knobs hold up but if they do, awesome dual purposing of a footswitch that I hope makes it into other devices! I would miss my scribble strips in a big way although for owners of any HX device other than the Helix or HX Effects I guess users are used to not having them available. Agree with the reviewer that Neural should provide optional links from amps to cabs so that they can be selected in tandem. Having also the option to assign your own link would be perhaps a bit onerous the first time around but ultimately would give you instant access to your preferred amp and cab pairing. They could provide some factory pre-linked examples as well if so inclined. This would be nice functionality to add to Line6's "Favorites" as well although Line6 already has many factory amp/cab pairings available. No Variax input! No L6 connection to Powercab! Not that I would have expected those Line6 proprietary connections but those are serious considerations for users happy with their PowerCab and/or Variax. I would particularly miss the PowerCab integration. Wonder when or if polyphonic processing will come to the Quad Cortex Varying reports on the quality of the Reverbs and effects in general. Have to come to my own conclusions on this and I am sure they will be adding and improving. Seems to be light on the number and range of effects right now, a big negative for me that I hope they will remedy Will have to see how good the customer service is as this company is not USA based. How fast will their repair turnaround be? How well will they honor warranty service and how expensive will out of warranty service be? What will the parts availability be? These are all questions that will take time to answer. For those who like a built-in expression pedal the Helix/LT will still be the better choice. Only 256 presets available on the Quad Cortex and no real set list management yet from what I can see. This could be relatively easy to address in the future by leveraging the Wi-Fi capability and enhancing the app. In the meantime that is far fewer available presets than the Helix although more than the HX Effects. Not really a fair comparison with the HX Effects though given the Quad Cortex's much higher price point. Overall neither Line6 nor Neural appear to have convenient set list management yet. Not sure what the capabilities on the Quad Cortex are relating to the input pad and impedance matching; an area where Line6 has made great strides as of the last firmware update. A somewhat minor concern in the scheme of things but why are modeling companies so parsimonious with visual icons for differentiating blocks? Why not provide a larger library of icons, or allow users to upload their own? They don't take up much memory if you keep them low-res and being able to tell one effect or capture from another would be really helpful to seeing your whole signal chain at a glance. I've had an IdeaScale idea up for years asking for Helix to add more icon choices and it looks like the Quad Cortex is going to have the same issue. It will be even more confusing on the Quad Cortex where all captures are represented by the same icon but a capture can include not only a cab but also effects as well. You look at the screen and it is icon salad where everything looks like a piece of lettuce, or maybe if you're lucky it resembles a mushroom or onion. Nope! That might be a cherry tomato or a bacon bit. Can't really tell. As with the Helix, widely disparate effects, amp channels, etc. are grouped together under overly broad and therefor sometimes meaningless or vague icons; particularly in signal chains with large numbers of blocks.2 points

I've used my Stomp as an audio interface for almost a year, and have been quite happy with the low latency I've been able to achieve.1 point

Wow, that was about the pickups! Didn't even know that was a thing to be honest, I'm feeling kinda dumb. They were pretty close to the strings, I just lowered them from 3mm, and it totally changed everything. Gotta tune all my pickups now! Really happy that L6 has such a great community, you guys really made my day :) Big thanks to all of you for the help!1 point

I cannot reproduce your problem at all... but I can clearly hear it in your audio examples. Do you set your guitars up very similar to each other? IMO, this sounds like the pickups are too high (close to the strings) and the magnetic pull is effecting the string vibration. The sound is likely always there... but with lots of gain it becomes more noticeable. When you begin to play above the 12th fret it becomes even more pronounced.... and is a common problem with magnetic pickups. The neck pickup will have more impact than the bridge pickup... try lowing just that one to start with, then just lower the bridge to match volumes.1 point

Sounds pickup/guitar related to me. Guitar is a huge variable here, very hard to repro your exact situation.1 point

I have a Standard. Use is practice, recording, and (hopefully eventually) live. It's great for practice and learning new songs since I can change tunings and models easily. For recording I generally will use a guitar tuned appropriately (not modeled), or else tune the Variax itself so that any artifacts don't show up. Recording use is mainly the acoustic and clean to slightly broken tones. For heavy distortion I prefer a real bridge humbucker since the palm muting is not great on the standard models (more on that later). I also prefer a neck HB for solos, so I use a different guitar for those recordings. The LP neck model sounds good, but it's just not as good as the real one I'll use for recording. The recordings for rhythm parts and for clean tones its great. Acoustic sounds convincing in a mix and is so much easier than mic'ing up. I've also used the sitar for a decent Rolling Stones cover. There's no latency that I can discern. I replaced the bridge pickup with a DiMarzio single-coil sized humbucker, essentially giving me a Strat HSS, and I like it much better. It was a big improvement for palm muting. I also use a silicone neck wrap (like one of those old Livestrong bracelet things). My palm muting position places my pick right on top of the middle pickup, so I lowered it far down and out of the way. Not to worry, though, since I just use the modeled middle pickup if I want that. If you're playing for a live online audience and want to change quickly then pairing Variax with Helix is probably just about the best tool you can have. You can change model, tuning, amp, etc all with one footswitch. You can also change those things with snapshots, which is great, too. I have one preset which uses the real magnetic humbucker with high gain for heavy rhythm parts, the modeled single coil for clean parts, an acoustic, and a LP neck pickup for solo. It's pretty sweet. And doesn't take up any DSP on the Helix, so I can have 2-3 amps in that monster preset. Like I said, for recording I'd change it up a bit, but for either live use or jamming or figuring out parts, it's fantastic.1 point

No latency that I can tell Tuning is amazing but not entirely free of artifacts depending on what you're doing Modelled guitars are good as substitues but require 'tuning' to fit your need and theres lots of 'model packs' about put together by some very knowledgeable people https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?board=138.0 My use case is largely live - Standard >> Helix >> PC+ or DT25 I chage tuning and guitar models between and within songs using snapshopts For live my rig went from 3-5 guitars, 2 x heads, 2+ x cabs, pedal board, DIs for accoustic to 2 x variax standards (one spare), Helix and 2 x PC+ or DT 25 Both standards have been plecked, bone buts put on, and locking trimmng tuners put on - very happy with the feel as a lng term fender player - had a couple of JTV 59s I couldn't love due to feel not working for me Have also used for recording projects and not told people what the guitar used is and never had tone or tuning questioned - including dobro and accoustic models in open tunings and slide Yes - I'm a fan.1 point

May have just found a solution. I'm running Big Sur 11.2 and had gone through rounds of trying to get this to work with multiple installs of the Line6 drivers and POD HD500X Edit. I thought to check one more time to see if the extension was being blocked and found that it wasn't, but I did find that it wasn't being loaded. In "System Information" look under the Software->Extensions for the "Line6Audio" extension. There is a property there that will tell you if the driver has been loaded or not. It should look like this: If Loaded is set to "No", type this into the Terminal using an admin user: # sudo kextutil -vvvv -bundle-id com.line6.driver.xtaudio That will cause the Security Panel to give you the dialog asking to authorize the extension. I did that, and rebooted. Once the computer was back up, my POD HD500X was being seen. I hope this helps. P.S.: I don't have an M1 mac, so I can't vouch that this method will cause the extension to load or work. YMMV1 point

I base all my decision making on what famous people do. The only thing I can't figure out is why I haven't been on the Tonight Show yet... anybody know what kind of underwear Steve Vai buys? Maybe that's the answer...;)1 point

20 to 30 ms is getting into slap-back echo territory...way too much to play with (unless you're willing to "learn" how to be terrible ;) ). It'll drive you nuts.1 point

Analogue has virtually no latency. Digital systems generally have a bit to allow error correction. From what a friend who has a pair has said, the RS185 has around 20 to 30 milliseconds. Much better than Bluetooth, but might add up with other system latencies to be noticeable on fast rhythm passages.1 point
