  1. I will try reflashing again. It's easy enough to give it a try. I'm guessing using my 500X should be just as good as the interface cable that came with the Variax. Just the mags sound fine. No "bleeding" of the models. At least I know that this is not normal. Thanks guys.
  2. I posted this on the Variax Standard forum, but since it is supposed to be the same electronics, I wanted to see if any JTV owners have experienced anything similar. Hey everyone, I just got a Variax Standard (VS) and wanted to ask everyone a question regarding the tone I am hearing on most of the models to see if you are hearing it as well on your models. I bought this "blemished" and it is cosmetically perfect from my observation. I updated the FW to 2.21 when I first got it because the models did not sound like the model selector indicated. When I plug straight into my DT50 set to the factory default topology I, (I chose that for the clean Fender tone) most of the models sound like they have been mixed with a banjo or Dobro model. It is most prominent at the beginning of the note. It is a plucky sort of sound. I don't really notice it with the 89 bank I just installed. When I let a chord ring, it sounds a little like the sitar model is mixed in, especially with models in the middle position of the selector switch. I don't really hear it on the Jazzbox models but the Semi and R-Billy are the most prominent. When I VDI into the HD500X which is L6 Linked to a DT25, it sounds much better, but I can still hear the remnants of this artifact. Mostly the sitar effect when letting a chord ring out for a few seconds and the banjo effect on the Semi and R-Billy models. If I VDI into the HD500X and 1/4 inch out to an Alto 112, they all sound much better still (except the Semi and R-Billy models). So I am wondering if this is a problem with just my VS, or if others have noticed a similar thing going on. I guess the next step is loading up some of the VGuitarForums banks and see if they do the same thing.
  3. The terms "want" and "need" can get blurred when it comes to guitar gear. Every person on this forum may very well have their own definition of need when it comes to gear. "I need it for work." B) "I need it for "that tone"." "I need it to impress my mates." "I need it to cover up what a crappy player I am." :( "I need it because I am such an awesome player." :P "I need it because I have such a small..... whatever." :)
  4. I just tried out the scenario you described in your post. With Master volume and both Channel volumes all the way up, there is no sound from either channel. Turning up the Drive pot produces a clean output. Turning up the Bass pot produces a bass output. Clearly different from the Drive output and a completely separate tone. Moving to the Mid, Treble or Presence pots individually produce progressively less output than the Bass pot. Channels A and B respond the same way. It could be a hardware issue I suppose, but I would reset the amp. It is easy, quick and can't hurt. Engage the topology switch down and the Pentode/Triod switch up (pinch them together), then turn on the power switch. Hold the topology and Pentode/Triod switches together for about 10 seconds or so, until you see one of the topology Roman numerals light up. Then you can release the topology and Pentode/Triod switches. Let us know how it works out.
  5. Bizarre. I had a JTV59 shipped to me a month or two back. It had some electronic problems and a crack where the neck met the body so I sent it back. The thing is, when I opened HD Edit, it recognized it as a JTV89. I reflashed the FW and it did not change. I was reading the FW update descriptions yesterday and was wondering if the 5 models were now available for other Variax guitars. It does say "The five high-gain models that were previously exclusive to JTV-89 ...". I would like to know where to find those models as well if I can try them in my Variax Standard.
  6. I like playing both parts of the dual lead at the same time without any harmonizer or pitch glide. I use a pick for the notes of the first single lead part and finger pick the dual lead part. It sounds great and it is a lot easier than I thought it would be. Thanks!!!
  7. True. I'll have to pick and choose on an as needed basis. I'm finding some decent websites that help.
  8. The guy in this video picked out the parts much better than I was able to. Great resource! This is an interesting idea I did not think of. I just got my Variax Standard and look forward to experimenting with this blending option. I did not think that idea all the way through. It is more complicated than I was thinking. Thanks for the patch and the link to the Eagles cover. I'll load this up asap! Wow! You have provided me with several great options. I will keep them all in my "bag of licks tricks ". Another idea occurred to me while I was reading all your great responses. In the case of this particular song, since guitar 1 plays the same progression twice, I could loop it the first go around, then play the harmony part the second go around. That's if I can tap dance in time. Again, a lot of possibilities with this gear and the innovative ideas from the players on this forum. Thank you very much!
  9. A little learning is a dangerous thing; drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again. (Alexander Pope) If I'm going to drink, I might as well drink to excess. :)
  10. Hurghanico, Thanks for your response. I will try recording one over the other for the sake of learning both parts. It sounds like if one could change the key of the harmonizer on the fly, it could work? :)
  11. Pianoguyy, Thanks for the response. I have corrected my post with regard to the A# error. It looks like I need to learn at least some basic music theory. I looked at this from the perspective of semitone distance from guitar 1. I came up with this: B to F# = -5 semitones A# to C# = -9 semitones F# to B = -7 semitones C# to Bb = -3 semitones Looking at it this way, maybe the harmonizer isn't going to be able to do that on its own.
  12. I'm trying to get the Smart Harmonizer in my HD500X to work with the dual lead on Run to You by Brian Adams. I know just enough music theory to confuse myself. So if you are going to explain this to me, which I really would appreciate, please do so on the "this guy doesn't have a clue" level. Thanks. This is what I have done so far: I picked out the beginning of the song as I was noodling around starting with the first note of A on the 5th string. When I went onto youtube to start learning the rest of the song, it sounded like they started with the first note being an F#. So I went to my trusty Custom tuning option an dropped my new Variax Standard 3 semitones. (produces a little warble when you let 4ths ring for a few seconds, but I don't know if there is a way to fix that) So now I can play the beginning of the song as though I'm in the key of "I have no friggin clue" I tried pretty much all the key signatures and choices from the drop down list of Maj, Min, etc. at -3 and I can get close on many of the notes, but not all of them. Now I could be wrong, but it sounds like the actual notes the two guitars are playing is something like the following: When Guitar 1 is plating these four notes: B Bb F# C# B A# F# C# then Guitar 2 is playing these four notes: F# C# B Bb F# C# B A# Is it possible to play either guitar 1 or guitar 2 and get the harmonizer to sound out the other part? Does the key signature setting on the harmonizer have to change if I drop the standard tuning using a Custom setting in HD Edit? Thanks
  13. Houston, we have a problem...... We are approaching the event horizon of the seemingly endless black hole described as the Helix. Many have already been sucked in by its tremendous gravitational force. Skipping through time and space and large amounts of cash or credit via the mystery known as "pre-order". A minute seems like a millennium. Hey, not to hijack this thread but can you guys include an effect pedal that produces a sonic boom? That's gonna be a deal breaker for me it I can't get "The Boom". Seriously folks, don't make me start a video campaign on youtube.
  14. Comment from TGP by Music4dw in reference to the above video: Digital Igloo said: ↑ Sean > Guitar > Helix > USB > ProTools Me > Guitar > Helix > USB > ProTools Well, if Helix sounds bad when I get it at least I'll know what the variable is I like Music4dw's perspective. That's a pretty honest statement, with the caveat that Sean did have some pretty nice guitars (plural) in that video. Don't get me wrong. I was quite impressed with the video. I thought the Helix sounded great.
  15. Seems like the same request. DT amp compatibility for Helix (http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/DT-amp-compatibility-for-Helix/726817-23508) (76 votes) Helix integration with DT amps (http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Helix-integration-with-DT-amps/734958-23508) (54 votes) An updated firmware for DT Helix (http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/An-updated-firmware-for-DT-Helix/739765-23508) (16 votes) I'm guessing there is some overlap of votes (we can only see the last 20 names), but the true total is likely more than 76. Anyone know the real number?
  16. Even Chewier :)
  17. The "12AX7 Boost Mode: Bypass / Enable" described in the "DT_MIDIGuide_v2_0_RevA_English" on page 2.6 works on DT25s, even though it says DT50 only. The DT50 is the 12AX7, DT25 in modeled.
  18. You will find many opinions and recommendations here and on other forums, but what matters is what sounds good to you. That being said... You will want to make sure your firmware and drivers are all up to date. You can update the POD via USB with Line 6 Monkey (http://line6.com/software/). You will need the License Manager from that page as well to register your gear. If you wish to update your DT, you will need to connect via MIDI. (http://line6.com/dtv2update/) There are a lot of nuances and granularity to what you can do with your new POD. Some love to tweak their tones, some just want to plug in and play. If you are a tweaker, you have found Nirvana. If not, it may take some time to "adjust" to your new gear. There are lots of awesome folks on this forum with many years of experience and talent. If you like to read, you might enjoy Meambobbo's HD Guide site: http://foobazaar.com/podhd/toneGuide/ There are some videos right here on Line6 for patch creation: http://line6.com/support/page/kb/_/tutorial-videos/line-6-video-tutorials-complete-list-r202 And of course, a good place to start is right here: http://line6.com/support/manuals/ Oh, and in answer to your question, no, there are no restrictions. The "pre" amps in your POD were "designed" for use with the DT amps, but you can use full amps if it sounds good. You might want to try playing around with the Input 1, Input 2 parameters. You will find plent to read about that on this forum. Cheers
  19. That is correct. 1/4 inch guitar cord into Guitar In of the POD L6 Link from the POD (Where it says "Connect to L6 Link Only" on the back of the POD) into the L6 Link In on the back of the DT (Where it says "Connect to L6 Link Only" on the back of the POD). Power up the POD and wait for about 10 seconds until it finishes initializing, then power up the DT. Adjust settings to taste. Enjoy!
  20. Thanks! The Boss BR-800 looks like it bit more than I want, but like you said, everyone wants it for different reasons.
  21. Hey everyone, A drummer brought a Tascam 40 to a jam yesterday to record us play. I thought that was a pretty convenient way to objectively listen to how things sound afterward. Does anyone have experience with this type of device and have any suggestions or input about them? Thanks
