Dreaded Blown Diode on Variax 700 (2003)
psarkissian replied to MrDRC's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Let UPS properly box it. Gig bag alone is not enough, it would arrive here in pieces. I've seen that happen. -
Dreaded Blown Diode on Variax 700 (2003)
psarkissian replied to MrDRC's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
I told them I have a few parts left for those. Either me or my lab mate (he dates to the original Variax, his special thing) can do that when it arrives. -
" How did that happen? " --- Using the Workbench application. https://line6.com/software/index.html , download with that.

Log a Support ticket in your account. It may have to come back to Calabasas and evaluated first. We still have a few parts for repairs here. -
Updateing FIrmware // Cannot Register FBV Shortboard
psarkissian replied to peeweejd's topic in Spider IV / Spider Online
Is the unit second hand? If so, it may be the previous owner forgot to remove it from their registered list. Log a Support ticket, they can help you with that. -
No greater than 2GB.

Hmmm,... mid play, sounds like the tubes. Yeah, it's about that time.
-
If it's during power on or power off, then it would be a filter cap discharge cycle, also known as the RC time constant. Might not be as well matched to the transformer as it could be. How long since the tubes were swapped out last? Are they the specified tubes and bias? Tubes choices to use for the DT Series,... DT-50 Series: 12AX7EH Electro-Harmonix approved for the DT50 pre-amps. EL34EH Electro-Harmonix (matched pairs) for the power amps. DT-25 Series: 12AX7B China for pre-amps. EL84EH Electro-Harmonix (matched pairs) for the power amps. Power amp tube choices are crucial, and must be properly biased by a tech or Line 6 authorized service center who knows the product. Don't do this yourself, the shock hazard is too great,... and it hurts when you get electric shock. Leave it to a tech trained who is for this. These valve amps are particular about tubes and tube brands. Do Not use substitutes, No Mesa, Groove Tube, Tung-Sol or JJ or (etc) substitutes. No hot rodding of an already Bogner hot rod. How often do you play it? Gigging musician (once every 12-18 months), weekend warrior (once every 20-22 months), bedroom/closet studio rocker every couple weeks (once every 24 months)?

Batteries for JTV

Batteries for JTV
psarkissian replied to fairleas's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
As far as I know, JTV batteries will still be out there for some time. $1,200,... the price of an inexpensive laptop, that becomes obsolete and out-of-date every two years. Had my Variaxes for seven times as long. And if in some distant future I can't get parts, being a tech, I can always turn it into some other kind of guitar with my own electronics. Future changes, options abound,... it's what we do with them that makes a difference. Don't mean to sound like Alan Watts. -
Batteries for JTV
psarkissian replied to fairleas's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Apple and MS are no longer supporting 32-bit processing, that doesn't mean you stop using a computer. Audio tape is no longer supported, all those cassettes laying around, that doesn't mean you stop listening to music. Batteries,... yes, removing when not in use is a good habit with any electronics. -
Right, and that would require the presets already be in the amp and then off-loaded using Spider Edit. I far as I know, those files were never made available to end users as separate item.

JTV-69 Tuner Hole Size
psarkissian replied to Nos402's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
https://shop.line6.com/accessories/guitar-accessories/ Listed as out-of-stock for now. DO NOT purchase 3rd party substitutes, I have had nothing but problems with those when they show up in guitars coming across my repair bench. DON'T use substitutes even if they use the word "compatible",.... they're not. -
Need Help connecting to Computer
psarkissian replied to coolguy26507's topic in Spider IV / Spider Online
Yes it is. Thank you. I'll hide yours too since the link there also functions. -
Some do, unfortunately. Crank it up to where it pushes the limits of the speaker(s). Typically have to check those whenever the power amp chip blows, just to be certain the speaker isn't damaged. Always someone who wants to get more out of it than it was designed to give. See that all too often on my repair bench.
-
Fry the input,... yes, possible. Don't see that much, somewhat rare. Doing something that blows the output amp chips is more common,... in spite of protection circuitry.
-
EarthSuburb,... There were a few like that with the Spider III years ago. With Spider IV, the main board would fail for other reasons unrelated to thermal issues. Having serviced hundreds of Spider IV's, and done my share of thermal checks for such things, the typical fail mode was what I eluded to above in a prior response relating to power amp mute or amp chip failure. Some Spider II amps had a couple of chips with thermal issues on the main board, that was dealt with and solved in the Spider IV, along with a couple of other things I pressed engineering about during the Spider IV design process. Any thermal issue would not occur on the main board, but can occur on the amp board, if driven too hard for the amp power to venue space being played in. A Spider IV 75 is fine for a garage band, too small for Madison Square Garden. Cranking a 75 up there will definitely blow something.

Use the TRS, it works better. Tip = signal Ring = +Vdc Sleeve = ground return
-
Not turning on Models using battery and 1/4",... 1- Use a guitar with a TRS plug, it's an active circuit guitar. 2- Could be the 1/4" jack in the jack plate, that would require a trip to the service center. 3- Could be a problem with the battery compartment power circuit, intermittent solder point sending a false "low battery" signal to the main board, in spite of all the LED's on the indicator. That too would require a trip to the service center.

Ring up E&M Electronics in Milton Keynes near Bletchley, they are the authorized service center there.
