Can I monitor Helix USB tracks OUTSIDE of DAW in Windows?
rd2rk replied to thedudeabides79's topic in Helix
The computer needs to know two things: Where the audio is coming from Where the audio should go You either need a DAW or some sort of "Audio Pipe" utility to send the "Recording" source to the "Playback" destination. This link MIGHT help: https://www.howtogeek.com/364369/how-to-record-your-pcs-audio-with-vb-cable/ -
Is the MIDI Channel on the FS set to Base? Attached is an example preset configured to do what I THINK you're trying to do. Works on my Helix Floor. Vulture1-1.hlx

I'm sure I'm misunderstanding your question, because it makes no sense whatsoever. The Foot Controller controls the Rack. The audio outputs to your speakers ARE a live rig. The only difference between that signal and plugging your guitar straight into an amp is the 2.5ms or so that the AD (guitar into Rack) and DA (Rack to speakers) conversion takes. Not even Steve Vai can hear/feel that, no matter what he says. The tracks are not "on the cable". You need a DAW to receive whatever is "on the cable". Whatever is "on the cable" is a digital duplicate of what's coming out of your speakers (no DA conversion). If you activate the "Input Echo/Track Monitor" (or whatever your DAW calls it) switch on the track, then the signal comes back out from the DAW to whatever audio output your DAW outputs to, and at that point there's a DA conversion. If you're listening to the sound from the Rack, and also monitoring from the DAW, there'll be a delay on the DAW signal due to that conversion and the additional time it takes to go from the Rack to the DAW and back out to whatever speakers the DAW outputs to compared to the direct signal from the Rack to the speakers. It'll sound like an echo. So, I must be misunderstanding your question, because there's no reason in the world to do that (that I can see). Maybe you can explain what you're trying to accomplish, and why you think it would be useful? -
Some amps/effcts use more DSP (processor power) than others. The greyed out selections require more DSP than is available. Attached is a summary of how much DSP the various effects/amps require. Helix DSP Values.xlsx

If you have a specific H&K amp in mind that truly represents that unique H&K sound, post it up over on Ideascale, see how many votes it gets.
-
Only way to do that is with Snapshots. Save a different PC# to the IC on a Snapshot other than the one that loads with the Preset.
-
You are correct, Global, not per preset. This (per preset) has been suggested, and you can vote on it over on Ideascale. Not sure what search terms you'd use (switches?), but it's a fairly recent suggestion, so maybe just page back through recents?

This is the way I do it in my "studio" (the LR). Another advantage is that if I want to play through a VST, my Scarlett has better RTL than my Helix Floor. It doesn't so much matter in my "office" (the DR) with my HXS, as I don't use hardware in the loops.

Just remember to ask - "Is this KNOWN to pass sysex?" "Link to data source PLEASE!" I know these work because I support the FCB1010 on it's user forum, and this question comes up often.

Note that I used the descriptive term "dependably". For $8 you can get a MIDI interface cable from Amazon or eBay. Maybe it'll work. I have two. Physically identical, probably made in the same Chinese factory. Both work fine for passing notes from my MIDI synth. One passes sysex messages, the other does not. EDIT: They've gone up. They're around $16 now. Still no way to even find out if they'll pass sysex. Maybe if you speak Chinese, but then there's the long distance charges...... These are also known to pass MIDI sysex messages, save you $10 if you have Amazon Prime or your local GC has them: https://smile.amazon.com/iConnectivity-mio-1-out-MIDI-Interface/dp/B00CO5IRSG/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=midi+interface&qid=1612905284&s=musical-instruments&sr=1-3 https://smile.amazon.com/Roland-UM-ONE-MK2-MIDI-Cable/dp/B00967UN50/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=midi+interface&qid=1612905329&s=musical-instruments&sr=1-8

Yes, in your (previously unstated) case, having real hardware effects in the HXS FX Loops, this would not work. The solution in your case is to trade your HXS for the full fat Helix, which is designed for more complex needs such as yours. In the solution that won't work for you, but would work for @BlankPlank, parallel processing is entirely irrelevant. All of his processing will be ITB in Native and the DAW.

I have an Egnater Tweaker15/112. It's possible to swap in EL34's. I understand that it'll work, AND it gets VERY warm!

On a cold, snowy night, just me and my baby, warming our toes by the tube amp's light.......... :-)

I just looked at the manual. You're talking about MIDI Scene Dumps. If your device is set to auto save, you want an interface cable hooked up all the time If you have an audio interface that has standard DIN type MIDI connectors, you don't need this. A pair of standard MIDI DIN cables will suffice. If not, then you need this type of interface cable, and this particular one is an industry standard that's known to dependably transmit the longer sysex files that these types of dumps use, vs the short MIDI messages sent by MIDI keyboards for controlling Synth VSTs and such.. In any case, unless you never change the Scene configurations, you'll want to back up more than once or twice a year. Computers 101 - "Back up early, back up often!".

In the attached preset, the Output 1/2 Block has the level set to -120. That effectively mutes Direct Monitoring. Path B is USB 3/4. That takes your signal into your DAW. You create your presets in Native, with whatever DAW post processing you want. The DAW outputs your recorded tracks, mixed with your Native and DAW processed live guitar playing, to HXS Outputs 1/2, bypassing all HXS processing. EDIT: the preset has a Poly Capo Block. Delete it if you like, it's not necessary, just something I was playing with using THU/Amplitube. For VSTs HXS.hlx

Yes.

As cruisinon2 says. If I looked at your preset, gain would be the first thing I looked at. Next would be turning on the noise gate on the Input Block. IOW - the obvious. Beyond that, making it "sound good" is a matter of adjusting the preset for YOUR system, from fingers to final output speakers. No magic bullet..

NATIVE does not support MIDI preset changes in VST2/3. LIVE supports the AU/AAX formats. If you're using a PC you need ProTools. If you're using a MAC then whatever DAW supports AU/AAX, including LIVE.
-
AFAIK, the only difference is the color.
-
Hard to tell without having the preset. Attach a copy of the preset so we can have a look at it.
-
No worries. If you don't have a DT amp, it doesn't matter. Ignore it.
-
HXS doesn't allow the Output Block to be changed from 1/2. This is what Native is for. The preset I previously posted is all you need on the HXS. You do everything else in Native, and use whatever 3rd party effects you want. BETTER than using presets on the HXS, as you have no DSP limitation.

Sorry, page 10. Sorry, page 10.

Sounds like a wiring problem. See page 9 of the HXFX 3.0 Manual.

When I got the PC212, the first thing I did was set the Stereo Width to 200% (MAX) and loaded up a stereo preset. It sounded like the speakers were 8 feet apart! I have my PC212 between my FRFR112 and my Studio Monitors which are about 4 feet to either side of the PC212, and it sounded like that was where the sound was coming from. The preset has a phaser, and it was disorienting! I had to narrow the field, finally settling on 125% as ideal for my ears. That sounds a bit wider than my Studio Monitors (6"), which are about 4 feet apart. When I stated above that the the separation is AWESOME, that was NOT hyperbole! I have no clue how it works, but it sounds GREAT!
