I think people (including me) sometimes get a little too hung up on the models being exactly like the real thing. I personally do not own many of the modeled effects so I can't speak to their accuracy. Some people think they are accurate, some don't, otheres are somewhere in the middle, as this thread demonstrates. I think a better way to try and think about it is use the modeled effect's original effect's sound as a starting point but maybe actually think about all of the models as new and different. Kind of like a lot of the custom pedals out there and how many are based on "classic" effect's circuits. That's how I try to think of it as I'm building patches. And if you think a particular model doesn't sound like the original and doesn't get you where you want to be, just try something else. i do this with everything in the Helix. Now, if you don't think any of them are musical or get you where you want to be, then the Helix ain't for you I guess. But you've got a reasonable size music store worth of amps and effects that would take months if not longer to squeeze every possible sound out them, so give yourself some time before you completely give up on the Helix.

Check these two threads out Also there is a mic preamp. Use that and put an EQ in there as well.

Nice and very helpful.

string levels in patch not honored on custom variax model
brue58ski replied to Indianrock2020's topic in Helix
There are some other anomalies with the Variax and the Helix that I've never really seen mentioned. I find when I go from one patch to another where the one patch has the tone knob at, let's say 5 and the other is 10, it stays on the last tone knob setting. This seemed to be happening with the volume knob as well. It's been awhile since I revisited this issue (just gave up) so I may not be describing this well. I'm hoping the next patch will correct some of that. If it doesn't, I'm planning on deep diving with the Variax just to see what works and how it works. I'm not familiar with your issue. Do you have a patch where you have both the modeled and magnetic pickups, with snapshots that you want to have the magnetics off and you do that by turning down the magnetic volume? I'm not sure how well I'm phrasing this. -
In case you didn't know or were wondering, the original is based mostly on the MXR Distortion +. He talks about it here https://www.benadrian.com/pedals/kwb.html

Oh. Rat's I could swear there was a level parameter for the USB output somewhere. I don't really use them a lot so I don't remember the specifically where.
-
Just people waiting for the update. At least it's been very civil. A refreshing change.
-
It's not like an IR browser. Each cab has parameters you can change. Select the cab, and then tweak the cabs parameters. It does have an early reflections parameter as well along with what's been mentioned.
-
They are different. Two main things with the factory cabs would be to try different mics and mess with the mic distance. I believe those are the two main parameters you want to experiment with. Many people do a Hi and Lo cut as well. I guess i would start with the Lo at 50 Hz and the Hi fairly high at first. 5 KHz maybe?

There is a DIGITAL OUT LEVEL setting under IN's & OUT's. I think it's on the third page. Try that. (Page 54 of the manual)

I'm back but got no time. I am sorry it stopped being fun. I was not trying to insult you or anything. Just a little philosophizing back and forth. But, ain't got time to do this today so you win.

Revelling? NAH. Wasting time while I wait. Yes.

Aimed at you? Well, it wasn't and again, you should perhaps slow down a little. Or maybe not be so quick to tell other people to slow down. Be slow about doing that. A definition IS a DESCRIPTION of something. That's pretty much what a defintion is. Here is a definition of definiton taken from the American Heritage Dictionary . A statement or description of the fundamental character or scope of something Note I highlighted the key word . We can't have a conversation if we can't agree on the defintions of the words we are using and you apparently don't agree with the defintion of defintion I found up. I did come up with a description/definition of now. I stated it. It is accurate. I would say it's not the only one. There are many in many dictionaries. So you can keep saying all of your stuff BUT, I have a definition, the dictionary has several definitions and you may not agree with them but they are accurate. I can't stick a pin in many things. Dark, light, musical notes, love, anger, etc. But it seems silly to say you can't define any of them. And since you seem to use the word now a lot, it must have come from some understanding of what it meant, i.e. it's description, i.e. it's definition at somtime, somewhere, at some point. The fact that you are arguing against it having a defintion means you've already started from a position that the definitions are all wrong even though it does have to do with a description of time. How do you use a word that you claim has no meaning. What you really mean is, here is a word that has definitions that I don't agree with. WELL!!!! I'm almost done waiting. I may not have time to respond to your next post. By the way, I hear there's an update coming up. Do you know when it will happen? :D
-
I can define it and I just did. You may not agree with me but I did and it is accurate. Have to agree to disagree on that one. Even though I'm totally correct. ;D And I NEVER said it was your statement. Here's exactly what I said. I just read another post of yours and I find this statement. i.e. the post was yours but this statement was not. Perhaps it is you that needs to slow down a touch.
-
Well I have to disagree. I just defined it. You may disagree with the definition, but I have a definition that is accurate. True about the past. True about the future. Where do we exist? That's easy. Right here, right now. I took one year of philosophy and came to the conclusion that you can philosophize your way into or out of anything and as much as you can dance around the truth with philosophy, it never changes the truth. I do find it fun to have these conversations though. Ya know, try and keep the mind thinking. I just read another post of yours and I find this statement " psychotropic drugs opened the doors of perception allowing an improved view of reality " to be incredibly ridiculous. Improved??? I would use the word distorted. Reality is the way you are without any drug type influence. Otherwise it's constructed from that and is inherently false. Reality never goes away. You can change your perception of it, which in and of itself is false. But lying around stoned ain't reality. Eventually you come down and have to consume more to maintain this deception. An extreme example, if I'm in a concentration camp as a prisoner, the reality is, it's miserable. BUT, if I were to take the right drug, I could think I was in nirvana. But that ain't reality and after I come down, reality will give me one swift kick (or gun butt upside the head). In order to maintain the "nirvana reality", I have to continue to consume that drug. If that's true, if you have to continually ingest something to make your brain maintain the reality you desire to perceive, it's not reality. Your tricking your brain into a false world. Like it or not, reality is what happens when you're stone cold sober. That must be why I like IPA's so much. ;D.

Aha! Got it! Now is what happens right before it becomes was.

This is a first I think. A thread about a Customtone tone. They've been mentioned in threads but haven't been the subject of a thread as far as I can remember. I will have to check this out.
-
See page 15 of the HX Stomp manual. I'm not sure if this will solve your problem exactly, but it does get you going out of two different outputs. I don't actually own one so I can't check this out personally.

One of the reasons I don't use IR's a lot is because of the difficulty of keeping the IR associations. It is a pain. Yes, the work around mentioned does work around it, but is so inefficient I just don't bother with it. Many of the other suggestions in this thread would be great. Looking forward to seeing what solutions they come up with.

This sounds like a NOOB question. Not that that's a character flaw or anything. The Helix has so many options it's easy to get lost, even when it comes to connecting an instrument. I suspect your issue with the AUX is your input isn't set to AUX or MULTI. Your cable does need to be MONO but I would think you would still hear something if the input setting is correct. Check your input to make sure AUX or MULTI is selected. In the case of the FX RETURN, I didn't totally understand your response but you actually need to put a FX RETURN block in your path and turn it on and make sure the settings are correct (mix and that kind of stuff). Note also that it can be set to Line or Instrument level. I'm pretty sure you want Line level. The only other thing (and still catches me every now and then) is the output. There are so many output options, make sure the output selection is correct. I hope it's one of these. If not, I'm a little stumped.

I see that. Was unaware of the X3 manual. I had one but the X3 was essentially 2 POD XT's housed in one unit so I already knew how to use it. Bottom line is there ain't one out for the Helix. It would be nice. I would like puctures of everything also. Nothing fancy, just a straight on shot.
-
I know what you are referring to but they have never really done anything like what you're talking about for any of the Modelling/Multi FX units. They've done "model galleries" where they kind of describe each thing but there isn't one for the Helix. The one for the POD HD has a lot of what's in the Helix but it sounds like you already know that. Here's where it is if you haven't seen it yet. https://line6.com/support/manuals/podhd500x

Sooooooo...........Since this isn't funny, you must be serious. He said in his post, often uses this as well. But he made it clear he wanted an alternative. I mean, you didn't actually think this was funny?...............or did you? ;D

Anytime you add an old patch, it has to Build (rebuild) it which is just upgrading it to the new firmware hierarchy. It will happen every time you use a patch built on an older version of Helix's firmware.
