Yup...sometimes these devices just get weird and can't walk and chew gum at the same time. I haven't had this specific issue, but occasionally some other odd behavior will appear out of nowhere with one particular patch, and the only solution seems to be rebuilding it from scratch... so far, that's been an effective solution. Time consuming and annoying, but effective. ;)

The answer has far more to do with where you're putting the speaker (on a pole, on the floor as a monitor, etc), and exactly how you're using it (is it for FOH with the entire band running through it, as a floor monitor with just guitar and vocals, backline stage volume for a guitar player, etc) than what's in the room. It's not like there are "concrete floor" vs "deep-pile carpet and big fluffy couch" settings to choose from. ;)

JTV can't alternate low E string.
cruisinon2 replied to danlee's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Are you selecting the alt tunings manually on the guitar, or forcing them remotely from a POD or Helix? If it's the latter, you might just have the low E string set wrong. If it's not something simple like that, then it suggests a deeper problem, buried somewhere in the guts of the guitar that you likely won't be able to address yourself. Doesn't seem like a piezo failure, because then you wouldn't have any sound from the low E at all... -
Used anything is a gamble. Doesn't much matter what it is...instruments, cars, underwear...;) Maybe the seller will tell you the truth about the item's history, and maybe they won't. Might you end up with a nearly or completely useless battery? Sure... mine is 6 years old and I've always used the VDI, so I never kept up with charging the battery... it probably wouldn't even take a charge at this point. I honestly don't know. Now I'd tell you that up front, but some people won't. So unless you get to test drive it first, buying anything second hand is an act of faith. Plus, these guitars have their quirks when they're new. You can expect to have to tweak things to your liking in Workbench, new or used.

Interesting... and it's nice that it solved the problem. But it begs the question, are you now stuck on 2.70? What's to stop it from happening again with future updates? -

How many hamster wheels running full-tilt would I need to crank out those 18W? ;) -
tuner displays wrong notes HX Stomp tuner displaying wrong notes
cruisinon2 replied to dmeros's topic in Helix
The OP's tuner has a major issue...no matter what note he plays, the tuner is displaying a note that's 3 semi-tones above the note actually being played. Somewhere an algorithm is failing spectacularly. Rolling off the treble or tuning with harmonics won't help him if he's playing an "A", and the tuner is telling him it's "C". -
Single vs Dual amp path channel volume matching
cruisinon2 replied to themetallikid's topic in Helix
You can't assume this at all. Even if the output level control is entirely linear, the dB curve and perceived loudness are not.... not even close. dB meters are often waved around as the be-all, end-all in these volume leveling discussions, but even that will only get you in the ballpark. There is exactly one way to reliably match volumes of different patches: Use your ears, and adjust accordingly. You will waste countless hours trying to develop some sort of universal formula to apply to every patch you create. The only tools you need are on either side of your head. A mathematical shortcut doesn't exist. -
Everything that rd2rk said... I would only add that the are a finite number of amp and FX pedal models available in Helix. And while it is a considerable and quite varied list, and most of the models do have a "real world" counterpart, they haven't modeled everything under the sun. So you may not find models of everything on your wish list, and you can't currently download any models that aren't included in the latest firmware version. I suggest watching some youtube Helix tutorials... particularly Jason Sadites' channel. That will get you started. And as boring as it is... read the manual. If you're not familiar with the modeling world, trying to guess your way through it is often extremely frustrating.

Ok you win...it was a horribly misguided "look at me" moment.

And one of the many problems with social media is that expressing a difference of opinion is automatically labeled as "being negative". This is just a conversation. Had I said "you're all fools if this matters to you"... then you'd have a gripe, but that's not what I said. Why must anyone be obligated to shut up and move on just because they disagree? This is exactly why everything is so relentlessly polarized today. Anytime someone comes across an idea that isn't in lock-step agreement with their own, the default reaction is to claim offense and tell the "oppressor" to be quiet. It's baffling to me. But never mind, I'll move along.

If you have reached that point, it means all possible songs have been written, and we all may as well sell our gear and learn to knit...;)

So not the point I was trying to make. Nobody with an IQ larger than their shoe size is gonna argue that knowledge hinders creativity. However, there are only so many hours in the day, and the tendency to over- tweak these devices is already very real. The last thing I need is something else to micro-analyze, especially when the difference is likely to be barely discernable for practical use. That's all I meant... it's hard to be creative if one spends all their time doing blind taste-tests between 42ms, 35.2ms, and 20.5 ms IR's. Just not time well spent, imho... but at the end of the day, that's all it is...an opinion. I'm no more "right" or "wrong" than anybody else.
-
This is just one guy's opinion, but if we all continue to fixate on the tiniest of technical details, dissecting everything down to the musical "subatomic level", we will completely sterilize the creative process, and eventually suck every last ounce of fun out of playing the guitar. Yes, the engineers who design all our fancy toys need to understand and be cognizant of this stuff, but what does it do for the average user? Not much. I can't diagram an amp circuit, don't understand what tube bias actually is, or the electrical reason (is there one?) that makes an EL34 equipped amp sound different than one with 6L6's in it...But none of that prevented me from successfully using tube amps for decades. There's already more than enough ways to go down the rabbit hole with digital gear. The absolute last thing on earth I want/need/intended to do, is to start obsessing over milliseconds of IR length. If I like how it sounds, then I "win", as it were. And if Helix allows me 42ms IR's, then that's what it allows.... anything beyond that will disappear no matter what I do. Can't hear what ain't there. Doesn't matter if I bought an IR that can be timed with a calendar... if it's gone, it's gone.

tuner displays wrong notes HX Stomp tuner displaying wrong notes
cruisinon2 replied to dmeros's topic in Helix
Odd that it's displaying everything a minor 3rd above the actual pitch... at least it's a uniform f*ck-up. ;) Assuming it's not interference from solar flares or a rip in space-time, I'd say it's busted. Service ticket time... -
Well your base "tone" really comes entirely from your amp... effects are just the icing on the cake. Your Marshall has whatever inherent characteristics it has, and it'll either be capable of doing a reasonable approximation of whatever Randy was using back in the day, or it won't. The HX FX won't really help or hinder, either way. And unless I've read it wrong, you seem to be comparing the tone you're getting from your rig to a Randy Rhoads tone you heard from a full blown Helix... if so, that's the problem... you're comparing a real "amp in the room" to a modeler. They are very different animals.
-
And you? If your goal is to let it go, then you're failing miserably yourself... round and round we go.

How dare you suggest that no one is deserving of instant gratification, delivered yesterday, at someone else's expense!!!!...Now where's my safe space and box of crayons?!?! ;)
-
This is just a guess, but somebody above mentioned the unit hadn't been used for several months...rechargeable batteries don't like that. Once they're dead long enough, they won't take a charge anymore. Try it with an old cell phone, tablet, ipod, etc.... or leave a vehicle sitting for an extended period without a trickle charger hooked up. At some point, there's no resurrecting them.

Can't be done. There's no putting the Entitlement Genie back in the bottle. An entire generation has been raised to believe that the world is their ashtray. It will only get worse...
-
Lol... honestly, that's pathetic. In a million years it would never occur to me to do that, and I've never actually witnessed it either. Switching guitars for another tuning, sure... but "Hold on folks, while I tune to Eb"?!?!?! Who does that?
