  1. Hmm, I didn't think of that. @Thieric, are you using the noise gate on your input, and it's just cutting out on quiet parts?
  2. taking the saying a little further.... "It didn't happen without a clip!" We want clips!
  3. Moral of story... Unless you gots the equipment...
  4. I'm sorry, I'm not sure I really understand exactly what happened. Also, you didn't describe exactly what your setup was, and whether or not it changed from one step to another... Are you using Helix as your soundcard? How were you listening to YouTube through the Helix? Was it the YouTube video that sounded awful, or did you switch back to Helix and it sounded awful? How are your monitors connected to your Helix? Are they? Upon playback of what? How were you listening to Helix through your monitors, then how did you make the switch to listening to YouTube through your monitors? And if YouTube sounded awful, why would changing a preset on Helix make YouTube sound better? I think you got that first post because your description doesn't really make a whole lot of sense about what's going on. Kind of like, "Yeah, I was on the train listening to my phone, then somebody talked, and all of a sudden there was a loud noise. Then I listened to my phone and it was fine again."
  5. Sorry, I didn't get notified of your question. Yeah, sounds like you need to open a ticket. I can't imagine what the problem might be, since you get the same response whether you use 1/4 in in (to the side or line input I assume), XLR in (to the side or Line input I assume), or L6 Link. Those are all different circuits and you said you are getting the same response no matter how you connect the Helix. As an aside, for L6 Link, I have heard it's very important to use a real AES/EBU 110 ohm XLR cable. While it may work with a regular XLR cable, some people have posted about difficulties, and then raved when they got the real 110 Ohm cable.
  6. JBL LSR305's here for studio monitors - A pair Studio Monitors is my recommendation to start as well, as they'll be useful for other functions as well (like mixing your recordings when you start doing that). (I have an L2t and L2m for playing out with the Helix, and I'm considering getting a DT50 amp as well just for fun) I know you didn't ask for this info, but there's are several free courses on Coursera.com for music production that'll teach you a lot about recording and even effects, andthey are fun... I took the precursor to this and thought it was a great course, but there's a bunch more now that weren't there before. https://www.coursera.org/learn/technology-of-music-production I forget which DAW (recording software) they used for their examples, but you can use whatever DAW you want. I used a DAW called Mixcraft (www.acoustica.com), which I ended up purchasing cause I liked it so much and it's really easy to use. Another DAW you might consider is Reaper. Both give you extended free trial periods. Have fun! Edit: Oh, that's too bad, the course was free when I took it. Look around, there may be other free courses available on Coursera
  7. I highly recommend the JBL LSR305's... You should be able to find them new on sale for $125 ea. I haven't bothered to look at used prices since I own a pair. And if you are going to use 1/4 cables to go from the Helix to your studio monitors, TSR cables are a MUST or you'll get noise. XLR cables are by design TSR. I'm assuming your comment about switching between the Wah and Volume pedal is because not all the stock presets have a wah? Otherwise, it should work that way if there are both a wah and volume pedal in the preset. To that end, I also recommend getting an external expression pedal so you don't have to switch back and forth (I hate that anyway).
  8. As far as Helix vs LT? I dunno, me, I think the added functionality is well worth the added cost. Again, I got mine from GC "used" for $1200... it still had all its packaging and plastic and didn't really look like it had been opened. It sounds like this is a long term business investment for you; another $200 - $500 is nothing over the course of a year or two; eat at home a little more often and save some money that way ;)
  9. You're also going to want to start collecting things like XLR and balanced 1/4 in cables for connecting to PA's and mixers and stuff in a variety of lengths (20/30/50 ft for the XLR for instance, maybe 6 of them or so to start, two for your helix a couple for mics, instrument cables for the guitars, mics, mic stands, music stands, ipod/tablet stands (it's nice to have the ipod for reference, tabs, lyrics, etc.... as your song vocabulary grows).... Don't worry too much about it. As you play out, you'll figure out what you need, what works, what doesn't work. Oh, and probably a couple of stools for sittin'
  10. While the Helix can handle a mic, I'd probably suggest you should process the mics outside of the Helix, at least until you get your feet wet. It'll be enough for you to manage your guitar and presets through it. Not that it's hard, it's just easier to keep it simple. When you say you are going to play out, what does that mean? Are you going to book gigs at coffee houses, clubs, stadiums? Will there be a house PA system, or will you need to bring your own PA gear? What kind of guitar are you playing, acoustic, electric? What is she playing? Will she maybe play with a keyboard, too? What are you planning on playing through/monitoring through? If you get something like a StageSource L2t (I got one used from Guitar Center myself for $500), it has a built in mixer with 2 mic/line channels, and a third line in/out channel in the back as well as a pair of RCA input jacks and an L6 Link in/out. One of the mic/line channels has an acoustic simulator capability. Both Mic line channels have EQ as well as separate Reverb and Mod effects. I haven't figured out the Mod effect yet, but the reverb is ok. So you could plug your Helix into the L6 Link, her mic and acoustic into the two mic/line channels. If you need a mic, you could use your Helix. Then with one speaker you've got your whole system, maybe add an L2m later to get a little more spread or for stereo. Either that, or you could get both an FRFR/PA and a small 4 channel mixer like a Behringer or something, put both your mics into that, and maybe her acoustic (you didn't say what she would be playing), maybe it might have built in effects for the vocals and guitar (or at least have get one with a send/return for the channels so you could add outboard effects to your mixer channels), plug that into your PA as well as your Helix into the PA, and you're good to go. If the house has a PA, the L2t could be used as either a monitor for you or in the back line, she would be all set for mics and inputs (she may want to bring a DI). Point is, I highly recommend something like an L2t or two for you guys (an L2m is an L2t without the built in mixer, and has only the Line in and L6 Link connections, and is a little cheaper, might be useful if you get a separate mixer, though I still suggest the L2t just because). It can get really loud and is a good quality PA/monitor. There are other FRFR/PA choices on the market as well such as the Altos 210/212's I think they are and Yamaha DXR10's that are very popular.
  11. Thanks, Or a load box, but excellent point, thanks for pointing it out. Obvious when somebody tells you, but I might have missed that on my own...
  12. Yeah, like @spikey, I would have bought a DT50 1x12 if I had the cash when they were blowing them out (I was so close!), but there also didn't seem very many of the 1x12's available. They had a 2x12 in the store and I really liked it, but, man, so heavy. I have been considering a DT25 1x12... but now, after doing research here for a while, it really looks like a DT50 head would be my favorite option, more manageable than the 2x12 monster or even a 1x12, with the advantages of the DT50. I've already got a Helix and 2 L2s, so I don't really need it, but, hey, what's GAS for anyway? Like the Boy Scout I am ( :P ) I like to be prepared... actually, probably more my ADD. But really, sometimes I'd just like to plug into an amp, I can get option paralysis sometimes with the Helix..... So if I get the head, should I just get the 1 or 2x12 cab, or are there other options that work just as well for a cabinet? Hmmm, wonder how they sound through an L2t by L6 Link?
  13. Your amps get heavier over time?? ;) Thanks for taking time to make a review :)
  14. Now you're giving me GAS to get a DT amp... damn it....
  15. Ok, I get it. You're not saying they didn't acknowledge up front that there is no true integration between the Helix and the DT Amps, nor will there ever likely be due to the complexities involved and the highly divergent design philosophies (which they have stated multiple times all over the place)...., You just wish they would give more information about the technical details about all the ways in which a Helix could be connected to the DT amps and what goes on. Did you say you've posted what you've discovered about using L6-Link between Helix and DT before? That's some great info you just gave there above.... Seems to me that they are expecting not users to bother using L6 LInk (since DT is expecting HD stuffs that won't be there), that it's easier just to connect to front or 4 or seven cable method to the amp, and then control the amp with MIDI. But it sounds like you've discovered ways of getting lollipop done through L6 Link? (P.S. Seems to me the info you are looking for can be found in the DT series L6 Link and MIDI Implementation manuals. Yeah, you'll have to twist it out, but I'm betting at least it can be found. Which is probably why they have not taken the time to detail it, since they washed their hands of it to begin with. Not that I don't agree with you that it would be nice to have a Helix specific manual. Reality says, however, their resources are limited.... )
  16. Why do you feel they refuse to acknowledge anything? DI has spoken at length about the issues surrounding integrating the Helix and the DT series amps. The template is there to show users how to control the DT using MIDI commands. It requires connecting a MIDI cable between the amp and the Helix. It's been specifically said that the Helix routing topology makes actual integration pretty much impossible. I'm pretty sure the template was not meant to be a be all/end all integration method, just an example of what you can do. Here's a link to a post from 2 years ago from DI. It pretty much says it all. There is quite a bit more discussion about it though, starting from before the Helix was released. https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/line6-helix.1586637/page-10#post-20130673
  17. Rather ... "You may want to consider not using IR's or Helix cabs"... some people use them with guitar cabs and they like them...
  18. Definitely sounds like a USB connection issue. Are you using a hub? Have you tried other USB ports. Sometimes computers have internal hubs that cause problems. Mac or PC?
  19. I'm using an L2t, but they should be the same in this regard. I have had zero problems and I've connected using all inputs (as it sounds like you have). Are you getting the same result no matter how you connect it? Have you tried perhaps connecting from a recording interface into each of the outputs (channel 1 and channel 2 xlr and 1/4 at mic and line levels, rear line level, rear RCA jacks) It sounds like you've tried multiple cables? What rev firmware are you on? I highly recommend upgrading to 2.21 if you haven't already. There have been some volume issues along the way. I'm assuming it's not just an issue with it disappearing when you switch to a preset with a volume block, and the volume block was set to 0? Previous rev firmwares did have volume block issues in certain situations. As far as we know, that is now fully cleared up with rev 2.21 firmware Assuming you've tried multiple cables, and you get the same result no matter how you connect it, and you don't see the problem when you test other devices plugged into the L3t, it sounds like there's a problem with the Helix.
  20. Working on setting up the next event. Currently planning it on Sunday, June 25, 2017 from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Somerville Jamspot 111 South St, Somerville, MA 02143 (assuming I can still get a room for that date).
  21. to continue that thought... the headroom parameters come into play as you extend the delay beyond the max the pedal was designed for, which, for most of the analog delay pedals are around 300 to 600 ms. There are lists around here posted by @benadrian that list the 'max' delay values.
  22. OP, you didn't say what your PA system is? I use an L2t... It's got a built in Mixer that works great for combining Helix with "stuff"... I put my mic and acoustic into channel 2 and 1 respectively, use the acoustic simulator on the acoustic, and connect Helix using L6 Link, and there's still the line in available on the back, plus the RCA jacks for other stuffs. So you could use the mic in on the Helix for your mic... that should about cover you.... Then for more power, you could use the L6 Link out to another L2m (which in turn would process your Helix stereo signal appropriately between the two speakers).... Lots of other PA's have built in mixers, one of the things I liked about my old JBL EON15 G2's.... If you're worried about the cost of the StageSources, keep an eye on Guitar Center's used section, they can be had for great prices there... got my L2t and L2m for $500 and $400 respectively, shipping is about $35 apiece or less depending... (for the L2t, I got a Helix, L2t and mic shipped to my local GC for $40). Mine look brand new, the L2t even had the Line 6 rolling case included in the $500 price.
  23. I believe the tone control controls the distance of the mic from the guitar. The signal from the Variax is the sound of the Acoustic as mic'd, It's not modeling the piezo signal. It doesn't need an IR, it's modeling is the IR. Whereas if you are hooking up a real acoustic, you are getting the piezo signal into the Helix, which could then really use a piezo->mic'd acoustic IR like the L2t has built in. Which is why I like to hook my acoustic up to the L2t directly, bypassing the helix, since the L2t has acoustic modeling IR for a piezo signal built into channel 1. Or you could hook a mic up to get the acoustic signal into the Helix... or, even better, put both the mic signal and piezo signal in and act on it accordingly.... (As a side note - One thing I like to do when recording acoustic is include both a mic'd signal and piezo signal in the recording... and I adjust the piezo signal into the mix enough to give the recording some life, but no so loud you can tell it's necessarily there.... Not that I'm any kind of pro or anything...)
  24. Mine has updated twice every time I've updated it. Once after the initial reboot, and then again when I reset the globals.
