  1. I agree with cruisinon2 on this. The larger strings should stick up above the nut slot but not the smaller ones. There is a fine line between too tight and too loose in the nut slot on the unwound strings. Most guitars come with a prefab plastic nut these days and they are a compromise. I have the Earvana nut on several guitars and I like them. The nut on my JTV69S is fine though. No tuning problems and the string height is just right. I think they may be Graphtech nuts.
  2. I'm afraid you are on your own here. It may be doable but not an easy task. The JTV electronics have the alternate tuning adjuster that you would have to route and mount somewhere. The board itself may fit.
  3. The ultimate nut is a Bone nut but you need to have an expert make one for your guitar.
  4. Insurance companies are like the house in Vegas. They always win big - at the expense of their customers. They hire the smartest math majors to make sure that this is the case. (Actuaries) They prey on their customers' fears of having a failure. My advice is take your chances. Take care of your gear and it won't fail often enough to make it worth having anyone cover your potential loss.
  5. These are plastic nuts that are not adjusted IMO. You can adjust it or have an experienced Luthier adjust it. I have done some of mine and I think that learning how to properly adjust a nut for good performance is a fairly difficult task to learn to do properly. You need the proper nut files and proper technique to do it right. You will love the improvement if you get a well adjusted nut installed.
  6. I agree. My JTV69S was exactly the same - especially with the Spank models. The Low E, A were way more output than the B, Hi E. I think they did this on purpose for some reason. Workbench is a good thing! It allows us to adjust stuff like that to our liking - not to match some guitar they happen to have modeled.
  7. Yes it goes through a relay but it is completely passive. The relay only operates when you turn on the models. When it isn't powered, it is just a closed switch.
  8. IMO product insurance only makes money for the insurance company! No way would I ever pay for extra warranty protection on a product. I have come out WAY head over my lifetime by never spending a nickel on extended warranties. We all should learn to take some risk. Insurance companies take advantage of us big time!
  9. This is important! The Flagship "Latest and Greatest" guitar processor should support all of the Variax features (at least for the currently shipping Variax models).
  10. I have not heard much here about build quality problems. My JTV69S (2012) is flawless in fit and finish.
  11. The Standard is very similar to the JTV69S. The other JTV's offer different styles and different necks / pickups. All share the same electronics and modeling.
  12. Most people tune real 12 strings this way to get a better sound.
  13. Unfortunately, most free tuners are worth about what you pay for them. :( I tried several on my phone and they all suck. I bought the Peterson app for my phone and it is pretty good but not as good as my Peterson Unit.
  14. I had to raise the Low E and A strings just a tad at the bridge to get rid of a slight buzz on mine when I got it. Play it without plugging in and make sure there is no buzz at all when you play it the way you normally do. Raise the action if necessary, adjust the truss rod if necessary.
  15. You need to have no fret buzz. Get a good setup done and your problem will go away if it's there on the Mags.
  16. Does it do it with the mag pickups? You need to determine if it is mechanical or not. No it is not normal even though you will see that several folks have issues.
  17. First try posting in the x3 forum.
  18. I will wait until Sweetwater has them. I trust them and you get the extra warrantee. Always had great service with them.
  19. You guys are dreaming. Line6 isn't going to do anything to fix this issue. It's up to the folks here to find a bandaid fix. I doubt that Line6 is devoting any development time to an old product. They are off developing new ones.
  20. The reason the USB adapter does not power the Variax is that standard USB is limited to 500mA and the Variax uses more than that - and it needs more than 5V. The battery is 7.2V or so. You do need the battery to use the USB interface. If you have a Pod that supports it like the HD500X then you can connect the Variax through the Pod and not need the battery.
  21. The USB does not power the Variax so yes you need the battery installed and a 1/4 inch plug in the jack. You also need the volume knob turned up.
  22. IMO a good tuner is all about the display. Resolution is critical as is stability of the display. It makes no sense to have a dead on measurement system if the display throws away the data.
  23. Good nut setup is critical to good playability and good sustain. If those things are ok then don't worry about the nut. If they are not, then get a good setup done.
