Be careful! HD500X will not work with WB on a 500! It only works with the JTV and STD with WBHD. I did upgrade my 500 to locking tuners shortly after I got it may years ago. I love the Planet Waves locking tuners. That guitar stays in tune better than most of my others. I also like the hardtail bridge. I eventually went with the ghost pickups. I did have intermittent problems with the piezos. I could bang the bridge with my hand to fix it. I still run mine on 6 rechargeable NiMh batteries most of the time.

You can run the HD500X into the input of any amp including the THR. No I don't have one so I can't tell you how it sounds.

It is usually a bad piezo ground contact if it comes and goes. I would pull the strings and clean the bridge really well to try to get a solid ground for each piezo. IMO the Variax design is very bad in this way. They should have used piezos that each had a ground like the Ghost ones. I had lots of intermittent problems on my Variax 500 until I went to Ghost Piezos.

Signal is too large for that input maybe.

String slippage on graphite Nut on Variax standard?
Charlie_Watt replied to pgmvox's topic in Variax Standard
It takes some skill to modify a nut to play correctly. I have gone through several nuts doing that myself. I always buy a few extras. If you get it wrong, it makes things ugly. You need proper nut files AND you need to get a good book on guitar setup to see how to properly adjust a nut. Even then the learning curve will consume a nut or three depending on your basic skill set. If you want to learn to do this go ahead. I did and I can do it well now. If you don't want to learn to do it, find a good guitar tech and pay him to do it. Should not be all that expensive. -
The battery will drain if you leave anything plugged into the 1/4 inch jack. It will last for months if you don't use it. You should get a good solid 6 hours of playing with a fully charged battery.

Can I get this foam or sponge?
Charlie_Watt replied to leemh's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
The foam or Velcro or etc above the nut only dampens the vibrations of the string lengths between the tuners and the nut. -

Charlie_Watt replied to leemh's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Almost anything will work to quiet the short strings past the nut. I use a piece of foam. I use this on all of my guitars - not just my Variax. -
I want a guitar that plays itself since I suck as a player. :-) The Variax models have been basically the same from the get go. (500, 600, 300, 700, JTV's) I don't think Line6 has any development going on them. It's not one of their money making products IMO.

Watch some of the Helix videos. There are some very good ones about how to build a very decent sounding patch. -
JTV with POD tuner -- unsteady
Charlie_Watt replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
You can't beat Petersen tuners! I find them the best I have tried. I find that I get easier tuning on my JTV using the Mags - Neck pickup. -
Am I the only one having these problems??
Charlie_Watt replied to ricoustic101's topic in Variax Standard
Try it with the 1/4 inch guitar cable instead of the VDI (if you are using that now). The Variax does send both over the VDI and it's up to the Pod to use one, the other, or both.- 7 replies

You can also try playing with headphones on. The louder you play the less you hear the strings themselves. Yes it is possible to blend the mags with the modeling but you have to go into WB to set that up.- 7 replies

Not tuner ratio. It's the way strings vibrate. It will jump around even if you don't touch the tuning peg. Pitch is higher at attack and it goes lower during decay. It's very obvious on a good strobe tuner.

Good tuners are "jumpy" because the string pitch changes rapidly when you pluck it. It starts out sharp and goes flat as the note dies out.
