  1. Perhaps you are sending too much signal from the helix to the power amp return, from your description of 'too crunchy and compressed' it sounds like you are overloading it. Does turning down the master volume on the helix improve things. Some returns are -10dB, some +4dB. If you give model numbers maybe someone with the same gear can advise. Works very well with my Orange amp, though I am now frfr.
  2. Read elsewhere you can open the pedal and switch the wires on the socket with a bit of soldering.
  3. I have seen elsewhere that front usb ports can be hub like, so ideally connect to the back. Though I see the floor unit works so....?
  4. This works for me in Windows 10, slightly out of order in Windows 7. Guess it can depend on pc and the resolution/speed of the timestamp http://line6.com/support/topic/18552-how-to-import-all-your-irs-back-in-the-same-order-after-a-global-reset-do-this-before-global-reset/?do=findComment&comment=138147
  5. Unlikely, but possibly something similar to the post I just added http://line6.com/support/topic/19035-cool-mistaketip/

    Cool mistake/tip!

Normally when I send from path 1a into 2a i set the input block for 2a to none (default?). I noticed that on this preset I had by accident set input for 2a to multi, so I am getting Di guitar added to the processed guitar from 1a. Gives it some roundness and warmth, both going through the IR. I was moving the IR to the end of 1a and couldn't workout why it sounded brighter. Happy mistake, not quite on a par with discovering penicillin !
  7. Mine feels almost instantaneous, a barely noticeable gap, poss 20ms lol, really just feels like a miniscule ramp up time between presets presumably there to smooth the change. I don't miss spillover as i'm already playing the next riff. There again unlike say Glenn Delaune's Clean Sound I don't need 21 blocks with so many options. I appreciate these complex presets and textures are great for some, but I write separate presets so I can get to the sound I want instantly, I go mono, one amp, one IR, a few fX, maybe 8 blocks total. Even then I split them across the 2 DSPs evenly as i figure that may speed loading time. I do place a few switching options in the preset, like amp volume boost, gain boost, reverb/delay mix for wetness, maybe a flange or an octaver, but do keep options to a minimum. I play weekly coversband gigs, one guitar, bass, drums, vocals. We cover about 100 songs and I get away with 3 banks of 8 presets and a few song specific presets, plus 5 position switch for pickup options =120+ sounds! Main Bank is - Clean, Dirty Clean, Crunch, Heavy, Louder Dirty Clean, Cleanish Solo, Solo, Huge Solo. A more vintage bank with stuff like slapback and a more Hard Rock/Metal Bank. Fairly generic I guess, but playing for 200 slightly drunk party goers, who just want a good dance, I don't have to get too precious. For me the switching is no issue at all. Again, I understand some users need huge complex presets with everything thrown in and 3 EQs. I do enjoy messing about with big stereo sounds for recording and just for the fun of creating them.
  8. I should add I'm only using Ownhammer IRs which also seemed to help, a bit more ring and even response to my ear. Helix stock cabs generally feel more smile curve eq to me, i do favour their ribbon mics for the fatness....which seems exacerbate the issue! For Ownhammer Akg 414 are my favourite
  9. I think mine is similar, easy to dial in the bridge and then front single coil doesn't sound quite right and needs more low cut. My guitars have Seymour Duncan JB and Custom in bridge and alnico single coils in the middle and neck. Dialling down the low cut doesn't seriously damage the preset for the humbucker. With an Rcf or Ev 12" monitor can cut up to 180Hz mostly on the IR block, on top of -60Hz Global low cut. Not used to this kind of bottom end with my traditional rig, think I'm getting there, but even so the discrepancy between bridge and neck doesn't feel quiet right.
  10. I did try the preamp only models, but soon realised I was missing a lot of character without the full amp. Particularly noticed this on the Mandarin, all the gain was lost and as you say the Divided Duo was almost silent. Sounded much better with the full amps without cab into tube power amp+cab. Currently gone back to full frfr with Ownhammer IRs thru an Atomic CLR, makes it very hard to put the guitar down once I've started playing ☺
  11. Hi Scott, another great preset. Taking me a long while to get my Helix dialed in, was on the verge of giving up with frfr for power amp and guitar cab, but your videos have been a great inspiration for me. Especially liking the Ownhammer IRs, they do seem to have more natural ring to them. Been borrowing a laptop for upgrading and i did grab the freebie Mesa. Aiming to pick up a new laptop this week to have a proper go with the Ownhammer library, I'm still on windows vista32! Then will also look forward to purchasing you presets. Wish you all the best with your health.
  12. Can't name it, but that is a great sound
  13. Doesn't quite work on my last Windows 7 save, using the tab 'date last saved'. They line up mostly in the right order, but a good few have been moved around in fairly close position. The folder only contains my IR complete export from 3 days ago. Guessing it probably exports slightly faster than the resolution of the time stamp.

    Noise gate query?

I would set the threshold appropriately. What I was questioning is any signal getting through when set to 0dB. I didn't explain it well, sorry. I guess I'm not overloading due to the hard gate setting mentioned above, presume on the other 2 gates that even with the gate shut they allow some signal thru?! Unless they are both on! Bit confused, it mostly came about when I was messing with input impedance, which when dialing down was removing the quacky harshness, also auto impedance with guitar volume down a very small notch smoothed things out. Thought to use 0dB on the gate to see if I was overloading the input, wasn't expecting any guitar signal on that setting.

    Noise gate query?

Edit: Why do I get guitar through when threshold is set to 0dB? My ignorance and inexperience with noise gates! Wondered about these discrepancies, don't imagine I'm overloading the input? Tried this at the front of 09 Solo Lead Crunch With Input Gate on, threshold set to 0dB still have clean guitar signal with sustain, about 1/2 volume from when the gate is off. With Dynamics block Noise Gate on, threshold set to 0dB, decay 10ms, about the same, some clean guitar signal with full sustain. With both on, no guitar signal. With Dynamics block Hard Gate on, have to set threshold to -9dB or less to trigger it. Otherwise no guitar signal. Using a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge position, set at about 6mm below the strings, Input impedance set to Auto.
  16. I've been experimenting with this. I set up one preset with an amp block into the output block set to 1/4" into the return of a valve head into my Marshall 1x12. Next to this another preset with identical amp block into the celest1x12 SIM into an eq block to output block set to XLR into an frfr monitor. Get as close as possible with the cab SIM Mic choice/ distance, then bounce between the two presets tweaking and saving the eq. Got pretty close. Also been reading about making my own IR with Voxengo Deconvolver software. Hoping with a condenser Mic at a bit of a distance I might get more of an amp in the room sound. Demo version let's you make 3 IRs then reboot. Also might try making IRs from famous songs.
  17. As Duncann said. The global eq can be applied to either XLR, 1/4", or both. The headphones can only monitor XLR, or 1/4", or all, no specific headphone only setting. In 'all' it excludes the global eq as this can't be applied to the digital out. I think you can route a maximum of 3 separate outputs in the preset, this does limit block options, 2 outputs is fine, headphones aren't a selectable output in a preset.

    Great sound sets

Just wanted to big up JazzInc's IRs and presets for anyone who hasn't tried them. I've been experimenting with various other IRs but these sound great to me without having to tweak eq, just a little low cut maybe. http://line6.com/support/topic/17504-created-ultimate-fender-john-mayer-clean-files-including-custom-irs/?hl=two+rock&do=findComment&comment=129406 http://line6.com/support/topic/16185-my-two-rockfender-clean-tone-presetir/?hl=two+rock
  19. More for the learners like me. I have found a lot of the fizz energy is lower down the frequency spectrum than the very highs. Using hi cut all the way down to remove the fizz, particularly on high gain presets, takes out the very high frequencies where there isn't a lot of energy anyway, losing detail and making the tone a bit muddy. Not a straight fix, this experiment is helping me to get my head around the numbers and maybe useful to others. Using a high gain preset, e.g. '06D Line6 Elektrik' has a space, add the 10 Band Graphic Eq block just before the reverb block, after the y-merge from the speaker cabs. Go to page 2 of the eq settings and dial 16kHz all the way down, to my admittedly gig beaten ears the sound is barely affected. Push the 16kHz knob to reset to 0dB. Now try the same with the 4kHz, to me this is nearer where a lot of the nastiness!? is going on. I think of it as that ripping a sheet of paper sound. Reset, then try the 8kHz knob. I quite like 4kHz -7dB with 2kHz +2dB and everything else flat. Using this i am beginning to get a better handle on how the different frequency numbers actually sound and am transfering my findings to the parametric eq for a wider bandwidth. Still a long way to go, I am sure it will vary from amp to amp, but as a general fix starting point suggestion... In the scenario above replace 10 Band Graphic eq with the Parametric eq, all default settings unchanged except: Hi Freq 5.5kHz, High Q 0.3, Hi Gain -5.0dB. Of course this will vary and depend on personal taste, the guitar used and the monitoring system. Loving this forum, I am learning a lot from some very insightful generous contributors and enjoying the polite helpful brotherhood.
  20. Awesome! thank you. I tried this previously but missed the merge option. Is there anyway to assign a blocks status to more than one foot switch giving us a scene mode
  21. A friend of mine who is a very experienced audio engineer since the early 80's with gold and platinum selling credits told me the following story. He started as the tea boy and worked his way up in a leading UK studio, fortunate to learn from some of the best engineers and producers. When AMS were introducing some early rack processors to a top studio in Japan they were asked " What settings do you use for a great vocal sound?" The reply was "Just use your ears and tweak the sound with the knobs", to which they replied "Yes, but what settings do you use for a great vocal sound?" I do struggle a bit, have read so many audio articles over the years, things like a guitar speaker doesn't produce much over 3.5Khz, i do tend to mix (spare bedroom studio) with my eyes and use previous goto settings at least to get started. Also confidence with my poorly treated small room and all the modes. Overtime by listening to my mixes in various other locations I have learnt how to compensate on my monitors. I'm still not great and don't think I have a good ear. So yes I do think it would be good to get some opinions on Helix eq tweaks from the power users. I don't think there is a one size fits all, on the cleaner amps I have more top for clarity, on the heavier amps I tend to cut more because I like a warmer sound. Depends on the line up of the band, in a power trio I like a thick sound to cover a lot of sonic territory, with more instruments I do thin it a bit with more eq/low cut. For my new Atomic CLR (see below) which I am finding very harsh and will almost certainly be going back Hi cut 5Khz-3.5Khz or even less, can get muddy. Low cut off-70Hz I was told close your eyes whilst turning the knob to avoid preconceptions. Edited : Don't mean to bad mouth Atomic, it's my inexperience and struggle with frfr, and the limited time frame to get a refund. I think the Atomic is superbly detailed and pure, esp on the cleaner sounds, just really struggling with the distorted sounds.
  22. Really enjoying your videos and and insight. Nothing wrong with wearing your t-shirt for 2 days if you use deodorant. You can also get 4 days out of underwear, forwards then backwards then the same inside out!
  23. I do find on simple presets with only a few blocks it's quite instantaneous, like factory 05c to 06c (still on firmware 1.04 here). Presumably the less it has to load the quicker it is, and using the same path and block layout seems to be a factor. Wondering if only using say 6 mono blocks which one dsp can easily handle, it's a bit quicker loading if you split the blocks between both dsps. For instance, Volume pedal, wah, compressor, amp on path 1, output to path 2a for delay, reverb. I don't need a lot for my 8 basic do all coverband presets. Bottom row, Clean, dirty clean, drive, heavy rock, then top row big lush clean, Cleanish solo, big solo minus a few db, big solo. Then a few specific song presets. Seems as though keeping say the reverb block settings the same in each preset, with varying mix, and in the exact same position (say position 6 on 2a) also helps, but I maybe imagining things!
  24. Had a bit of a breakthrough moment today. Anyone who like me is maybe new to frfr and struggling with the fizz should try this. I'd been loving the Helix through power amp and guitar cab, but realised I was missing a lot in the range of tones. I picked up an Atomic CLR wedge today and loaded up the Brit 2004 combo on a blank preset. It sounded horrible. I tried a lot of tweaking, even dialing the global hi cut down all the way, at the level it had cured the fizz it was pretty muddy. Was really getting to the stage where I thought I'd made a big mistake on the Atomic CLR, searched for a post on this combination which only confirmed my fears. Then flicking through the mic options on the Solo 4X12 none were great, I realised, 57 too bright, 4038 a bit boomy, take a y split from the amp and use them both, they blended wonderfully for a great sound, seems to be some phase cancellation going on (still got global hi cut at 5Khz) ...now I'm very happy. Time to start investigation 3rd party IRs ...
