I agree. It took a long time. My completely unsupported speculation is that there was a lengthy internal difference of opinion between the Line 6 people and the Yamaha Guitar Group people after Yamaha bought Line 6. I believe Line 6 wanted to continue Variax development but Yamaha is now in charge, and they didn’t want to. As I have said previously I wouldn’t be surprised to see Yamaha come up with the next generation of Variax someday and sell it under the Yamaha brand. But I’ll repeat myself. Completely unsupported speculation!

I think you are talking about the files on your computer? No, you don't need to delete anything. Hopefully you have a backup of your old Stomp presets that you want to restore into your new device. The first thing you should do is connect your new device to your computer and run your current HX Edit program. Login to your Line 6 account (see bottom right corner of HX Edit window). You will be notified if any updates are available; your new device may not be running the latest firmware. If update are available READ and FOLLOW all instructions carefully to update your device.

The noise issue depends largely on the length of the cable run. For practical purposes you probably won’t be able to detect any difference for a 1/4” cable up to 20’ length. Beyond that XLR is preferable. Another relevant factor that you haven’t mentioned is signal level. Make sure the Output Level (line, instrument) of the LT is set to match the expected incoming level of your iRig interface.

Line 6 does not provide advance notice of pending updates. Anything you may see here is speculation. Having said that, Line 6 has stated that there’s still lots of life in the Helix family of products. They are certainly working on the next firmware release, but what it will contain and when it will be released will remain a mystery until it is officially announced. The standard answer to the “When is it coming?” question is ‘Soon”. You get to decide when soon is. Some people even allow themselves to get frustrated when their interpretation of ‘soon’ is not met.

The Output block in each path allows you to specify the physical output(s) where you want to send each signal path. The default value for each path is Multi which means 1/4", XLR, Digital, and USB 1/2 outputs are all active simultaneously. You can change that value if you wish but I don’t think you need to for your purposes. The output signal from both paths will appear at their respective specified outputs. With the Multi setting on both paths the 1/4” L/MONO physical output will send a mono signal that includes both paths. So a 1/4” cable from the L/MONO output to your iRig interface will suffice. The sound quality is the same whether you use one or both paths. The second path will be necessary only if your total DSP requirements exceed the capacity of a single path. Amps are DSP intensive so using two amps in a parallel path (1A and 1B) rather than dual paths with one amp in each (1A and 2A) will leave very little available DSP for other FX. I would use two paths for greater flexibility.

Re: microphone: Yes, it needs phantom power. The UX1 does not provide it so you will need a separate +48v external supply.

I am the moderator who approved his post. I spent some time viewing the video and assessed that the potential information value for noobies outweighed the self-promotional downside, so I approved it. I remember when Helix firmware v3.5 was introduced (the new cab engine) I actually calculated the exact number of IRs available. The release notes claimed ‘thousands’ of IRs. It is actually approx. 3 million iirc. Here’s the formula. Anyone interested can do it for the POD Go. Perhaps not millions (yet) because there are currently fewer cab models. Not sure how the #mic models compares. Each future firmware release that adds cab or mic models will increase the number of IRs bundled into the firmware. #IRs = #cab models * #mic models * #position mic parameters * #distance mic parameters * 2 Angle positions I believe the Lo and Hi cuts are just additional EQs applied to the IR, not themselves additional IRs.

The new cabs are actually a kazillion individual IRs, packaged to be selected based on the imagery of cab and mic selections and placement. Each time you move a mic even a tick in any way a new, specific, previously captured IR is selected. That’s completely different from the old cab/mic architecture. A commercial IR package includes many individual IR files, and are packaged to be selected in more or less convenient ways. Usually it’s done by some sort of naming convention that identifies a particular cab and mic with one or moe mic placement parameters. Auditioning and loading individual IRs is a very tedious process. Line 6 now offers a very large IR package, built into the firmware rather than loaded into an IR slot, with a visual rather than filename selection and audition method.

I also had my POD Go repaired recently to fix this issue. In Canada the procedure is to drop the unit off at any Long & McQuade retail store. They handle the shipping to the nearest Yamaha repair centre (the authorized Line 6 Canadian repair centres) for repair. It is then returned to the L&M store for pickup. I had mine back in less than two weeks and the fix/improvement was instantly noticeable. No charge, fixed under lifetime warranty for this issue

Actually, you want to do the reverse; you want your MacBook audio to be heard from the Stomp outputs. With Stomp XL connected via USB to your MacBook Pro it can become the MacBook’s soundcard, bypassing your internal soundcard and its 3.5” audio out. Both your guitar and the MacBook audio will be heard at the Stomp audio outputs (headphones, speakers). If this doesn’t happen automatically when you connect the Stomp try specifically configuring your MacBook to use the Stomp as its audio input/output device. Then use the MacBook volume control to balance its output level with the main Volume level of the Stomp.

Helix presets have the file extension .hlx, so the presets you mention are not Helix presets. When using Customtone you can filter the search to select only Helix compatible presets. Use the All Products field at the top of the page.

Yes. The application to view and edit Helix patches is called HX Edit. But there’s a better application for your purposes called Helix Native. It’s the plug-in version of Helix that runs inside a DAW on your computer. It provides features for preset compatibility within the Helix family of products. You can load Helix presets and tweak them until you are sure they are compatible with the Stomp XL. Then export from Helix Native and import into HX Edit. You can download and install Helix Native for a free trial period and then, if you wish, purchase at a discounted price based on your Stomp XL ownership.

I would perform a factory reset first (well, 2nd. 1st would be making a backup). If problems persist reinstall the firmware. If problems still persist open a support ticket.

Why? They still work and there’s no reason to believe they will suddenly stop working. When a product is discontinued (and all products eventually are) it doesn’t cause existing units to die. Yes, if the electronics die in the next year or two it will be bothersome. But there’s no reason to believe they will, and it will be no more bothersome than any other piece of electronic equipment you use. Enjoy your guitars! After 10 years I still use my JTV-59 every day, and it’s never needed repair.

There’s always a flurry of update issues reported here immediately after every new firmware release on any product. In the vast majority of cases it’s because people didn’t follow the instructions. I’ve noticed that after they successfully install by following the update recovery instructions only a few return to tell us that, so it’s reasonable that you might anticipate issues. It’s always a risk to update any device when you need it soon. Personally I wouldn’t have done it now with a gig next week. Glad it worked out for you. I think if there were any real show stopper bugs they would have been found by now.
