brue58ski
So I'm stuck here waiting with a lot of time on my hands. I was making this list for myself and realized others may be interested. I looked through some posts and made a list of the FRFR's that people say they are using. I also included a list of 12" speakers people are using to replace their guitar amp/cab speakers that are supposed to have a more flat frequency response. A few people have built their own FRFR's and I didn't include those nor whatever actual guitar amps people are using. As you can see, products websites were included as well. I was surprised by how few showed up in my research which is by no means conclusive and only reflects what I found on this forum. Anyway, here they are. FRFR Mission Gemini 2 $1,499.00 https://missionengineering.com/shop-2/products/amplifier/gemini-2/?v=7516fd43adaa QSC K8-2 $649.99 https://www.qsc.com/live-sound/products/loudspeakers/powered-loudspeakers/qsc-k2-seriestm-new/k82/ Headrush 112 $299.00 http://www.headrushfx.com/products/frfr-112 Alto TS-212 $299.00, TS-310 $249.00, TS-312 $299.00 https://www.altoproaudio.com/products/ts210; https://www.altoproaudio.com/products/ts212; https://www.altoproaudio.com/products/ts310; https://www.altoproaudio.com/products/ts312 I wasn't going to include "reviews" but there are a lot of bad reviews for the TS-212. A lot of "I used to use them but got something that sounds better". YMMV. I personally have never tried them. The Headrush 112 and the Alto TS-212, 312 look identical but there is a difference. According to Headrush/Alto - "As mentioned in my previous email, The FRFR 112 is a full range/ flat freq response, ideal for monitoring and does not have any preamp built inside for microphone usage compared to the TS series from alto professional. That would be the difference between the two items." The difference bertween the, 212 and 310,312 is power. The 212 is 1100 watts. 310, 312 are 2000 watts. MonkeyXT
Yorkville YX10P powered 10" PA style speaker, wedge or pole-mount. (I'm using a pair of these at home for stereo - translates well to FOH results when comparing against a PA made up of a super clean and crisp SoundCraft board into two older Mackie 12" mains). I recently got to compare one of these up against a Friedman 1-12 FRFR and was super impressed with how well it held its own. I also compared against an Alto TS210 and... the Alto sounded 'messy' in comparison. I did post about these speakers somewhere on the forum. At this point I've been using these for just over a year. DunedinDragon
I think you left out another major player with the EV ZLX-12 and 10P. Fairly prominent in many of these discussions.
hideout
It probably won't cut it in a loud band situation but I recently got a Bose S1 Pro and dang it sounds great! And I love how the sound is so well distributed in the room.
jonandtice
You have the Alto TS210 and TS212 listed twice. The Headrush 112 is actually the same as the Alto TS312 but without the preamp. Great list! What about studio monitors and headphones? Or maybe that's an entirely different category and a topic for a different thread.
Rocco_Crocco
I use an Alto TS112. Out of production but works great. I also have a Firehawk 1500 that sounds amazing as an FRFR with Helix.
jbuhajla
A few people here use JBL Eon 610s, me included.
zivdud
Before using my Firehawk 1500 I was using my home PA; which, is a set of yorkville NX750, that sounded great and anytime hit up the open mic’s up in town I just run it through their PA system(QSC, JBL and Electro Voice) and it sounds great as long as the sound guy knows what he is doing. In my studio I have a set of yorkville monitors that sound good, too. Helix just sounds great period.
funkyou86
RCF 310 ART is also an affordable great sounding FRFR option which I'm happy to use with my 8 string guitars.
brue58ski
I have updated and corrected. Boy, this is turning into more work than I expected. But that's OK. I'll still keep updating for a bit. Thanks for all of your input. I didn't know about the Alto 312. Just more power than the 212 I guess. "I use an Alto TS112. Out of production but works great. I also have a Firehawk 1500 that sounds amazing as an FRFR with Helix." I'm trying not to include products that aren't available anymore but thanks for your input. I'll probably stop updating in a few days but so far this is great. Just wanted to create a basic starting point. I'm going to include a price now too but I'm only going to one place for the prices so YMMV. And no I'm not going to say from where. ;D
specracer986
The Mission Gemini Io is one I was interested in before I bought the PC+. By the way, you have the price of the PC+ at $599, but it's $799.

Or maybe that's an entirely different category and a topic for a different thread. Studio monitors and especially headphones are two different beasts. And I'm guessing there are a lot of recording equipment websites that do handle that info. I've never had good luck with a patch created with headphones translating to the real world. Again, those are common themes with recording in general so I would explore that. I don't find too many sites exploring the "what to use for a modeler live" area so that's what this is about. Last time I was in Guitar Center there was a headphone listening area so in that regard, I would decide your price and compare them there or somewhere else that has that setup. Bottom line is I would say they are different categories and could be explored in a different thread. I recall a couple of them in this forum awhile ago. Anyway Alto TS312 now included. Thanks. glideman
JBL EON615 Use them as side fill monitors and if I don't carry one of my FRFR amps, I just play through them with ZERO problems! Great sounding speakers that handle bottom end really well, too.
stuwend
Hi If this is for monitoring FRFR for the helix what about FOH, would this sound/tone change if the FOH is different to the monitor FRFR or just take a feed of the monitor. Just interested as there is sometimes a bit of difference between the monitor if you use a FRFR monitor and FOH sound and if you have a great monitor sound how to replicate that to FOH if the speakers are not FRFR like mine. If you're dealing with an older FOH system there's not much you can do. The physical way one speaker works can't be conveyed to another speaker by simply connecting a wire between the two. Not to mention, of course, you still have to go through a mixer. In spite of what we encounter in discussions here, there are quite a number of older PA setups out there that are 15 or more years old consisting of passive speakers with physical crossovers and driven from a central amp that won't have the clarity and definition of today's modern speakers. In the cases I encounter we typically don't send the instruments through the PA, just the vocals and things like harmonica and congas. I setup our on stage DXR12's on half height poles behind us in a traditional backline and use them to project directly out to the audience. This works well as long as it's not a large venue or event. But I haven't run into any problems like this in large events and most likely won't. Large events like that will normally use state of the art line arrays these days, or at least very large and capable FRFR systems.
