Why helix hardware sounds better than the plugin??
rd2rk replied to willyjacksonjs22's topic in Helix
There's a significant (10db) difference between the humbuckers on my PRS and the single coils on my Strat, as registered on the Native Input meter. That's where you need to turn up the Input knob on the Scarlett. Using the Input meter on the Scarlett as I described prevents over driving the Scarlett's preamps and provides the best signal to the DAW/plugin. -
Why helix hardware sounds better than the plugin??
rd2rk replied to willyjacksonjs22's topic in Helix
I have a Scarlett 2nd gen. Using Reaper, LIVE or Cakewalk, Native sounds EXACTLY like Helix Floor. Using Helis as interface instead of Scarlett, Native sounds EXACTLY like Floor. Maybe you just don't like the way Helix sounds. Different strokes.... -
Straightforward and tidy

On your Scarlett be sure you're using the INSTRUMENT input. Hit a big chord LOUD and turn up the Input level till it flashes yellow, then back off a notch. Unless you're using the same playback system at home as you used at GC, it will sound different, though it shouldn't sound worse than other plugins. Native has an Input meter. set it so that it's peaking around -20db. -
Are you on firmware v2.81? If not, update now. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS PRECISELY! Older versions tended to send spurious commands on Preset load. Make sure that in Globals-MIDI/Tempo "MIDI PC Send" is OFF. Set "MIDI Thru" to OFF. When setting PC messages in Command Center, be sure that "BankCC00" and "Bank CC32" are OFF. Have everything connected before turning anything ON. Try turning ON the Helix, letting it fully boot, THEN turn ON the amp. If none of that works, load a MIDI Monitor (MIDIOX if you're using Windows) and with "MIDI Over USB" set to ON, run thru the whole procedure, watching the monitor at each step to see what's actually being sent. Use the Helix ON first procedure. NOTHING should be sent until you actually load a preset which has an Instant Command configured. NOTE: Configure the DEVICES in MIDIOX after Helix boots or it won't be detected.

What amp is being used?

Is the green cable TRS, or TS? For a 2 button footswitch to work it needs to be TRS. Then determine which (tip or ring) controls what (Channel/FX Loop) and set up your commands accordingly.

See Page 35 of the HX Effects User manual - "Command Center". This is where you assign "Instant Commands" which send MIDI messages (PC,CC,NOTE) on Preset and Snapshot load, and where you assign MIDI messages to Stomp buttons. This is also where you assign CC#s to Expression Pedals. See the Neuro Hub Manual starting on Page 5 for instructions on using the Neuro Hub's MIDI features. I realize that some folks consider it rude to say "Read the Manual", but these are relatively simple devices. If you have a SPECIFIC question about using Command Center, I'm sure someone will be happy to answer. Specific questions about the Neuro Hub might be asked here: https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/source-audio-everything-i-am-a-fan.1931639/ Where the company president is a contributor, or here: https://www.facebook.com/sourceaudio/

You updated the Windows version of what? Sometimes if you disable and re-enable the device in Device Manager it'll reappear. Else just reinstall the driver.

Instant Commands (the lightning bolts in Command Center) will fire on Snapshot load. The commands assigned to the footswitches only work when the buttons are in Stomp Mode.

Works the same in Cakewalk (Sonar), which, like logic, requires that a VST2 be configured as a Softsynth in order for it to respond to MIDI commands. As I said, Bypass works, and the little MIDI indicator lights when Native receives a CC, but it does NOT light when sent a PC. EDIT: Native's MIDI light DOES light up when receiving PCs in LIVE, but still doesn't switch presets.
-
As stated, MIDI Bypass works, so signal is getting to Native, both from my Helix Floor and From the FCB1010. I can see the PC# getting there, along with the Setlist (Bank) commands. Same deal in Ableton LIVE10. I haven't tried Sonar yet, I'll try that now. Maybe someone should try this with something other than Logic? FWIW - If there's an amp sim plugin that responds to MIDI, I own it, and I've made them all work in all 3 of my DAWs with both Helix and FCB1010, as well as a multitude of Rotary/Slider controllers. No MIDI noobs here!
-
In a response on Ideascale, DI stated that Native 1.80 allowed preset recall by MIDI. NOT! I'm using a MIDI Monitor on the Native track (Reaper), so I know that the messages are getting there. MIDI Bypass works. I thought it might be because Helix sends Bank Info with the PC#, but switching to my FCB1010 I got the same results. DI?

Neither I nor the other rabbit hole poster said anything about not liking it. Too often forum participants tend not to read what is ACTUALLY written. THAT is what lead to the false premise in the first place! We merely stated our lack of interest and reason. Since we both have experience with the IR rabbit hole, our positions are well informed and therefore entirely valid. FWIW - the false premise was not only false and "a bit pessimistic", it was insulting, as the phrase "the pot calling the kettle black" implies hypocrisy. I own a car. I don't want an airplane, as I don't have a need and don't want to learn to fly. Does that make me a hypocrite?

Easiest: Set up a Stomp switch to increase the Output Block level: Click the Output Block Right click the LEVEL slider Assign a footswitch Click "Bypass/Controller Assign" Highlight the Output/Level/Footswitch selection Set MIN to the level you want when the Footswitch is OFF (normal volume level) Set MAX to your desired boosted level - Footswitch ON SAVE Other ways: Stomp Switch assigned Clean Boost, Gain Block or level boosted EQ at the end of the signal chain, directly before the Output Block. Here's an example of 3 ways to do it. Boost Example.hlx

With Helix connected to the computer via USB, you go into globals and set USB 1/2 Destination to the output you want the non-effected sound to be sent to. You set the computer to use Helix as it's soundcard. The sound from the computer (YT, DAW, whatever) is now separate from the effected guitar sound.

False premise. I choose my rabbit holes. Because I chose the one called Helix doesn't mean I have to devote my life to exploring every rabbit hole I see.

Helix is very reliable. All equipment is capable of failure. I know this will sound harsh, but if you can't get your high-tech equipment serviced in your country and it's prohibitively expensive to ship, stick with low-tech. Guitar, amp pedal board. Simple. A $100 (or DIY) pedal fails, finish the show without it and replace it when convenient. A $1500 high tech computerized music device fails and you can't get it repaired, you're screwed. Helix is very reliable. Murphy's Law applies.

Not wasting our time, this is what forums are for. I had a Bugera V5. Wish I hadn't sold it, lovely sounding little amp. Bought a V22, defective out of the box. Be sure the vendor you get it from has a liberal returns policy. A clean amp with a BE-OD in front of it will sound just like a clean amp with a BE-OD in front of it. That's all. I'm confused. You started out with Amplitube, a program that would give you most any sound you can imagine, and an AI. You have a Vypyr, a modeling amp, though you failed to say which model. Now you're talking about a very limited rig. We might be more helpful if you described your playing level and the goals you're striving for - bedroom rock star, recording songwriter, bar gigs, festivals, the Royal Albert Hall?

The Marshall gives you the tube sound for stage monitoring, and the FRFR112 gives you a FOH approximation. You can do low volume in your bedroom with the load box on the Marshall (or the EVH or a Diezel or whatever), and high volume anywhere you won't get arrested for turning it up. You should search YT for Ola Englund vids. He reviews tons of stuff, he's all about the kind of sounds you're describing, and he gets them on all sorts of equipment. If he can't put you onto something that'll work for you, I don't know who could.

What you're trying to do is what Snapshots are made for. If you can make the ES5 send a CC#69, a value of 0-7 selects Snapshots 1-8. You have to be sure that the ES5 is transmitting on the same MIDI channel as the Helix Base channel.

I had the same problem. It seems a higher end DSP enabled PA speaker like the Yamaha DXR series is very popular. If you're really wealthy there are special purpose FRFR boxes like Atomic CLR. I would like to try the Powercab+, but money.......I wound up getting a brand new Egnater Tweaker 15/112 for half the cost of the Powercab+, and I'm really happy (for now :-)). I have some presets that run straight into the FX Return - mostly high gain stuff - and some that use 4cm and a Helix mid gain amp that switches with the Tweaker set really clean (Fender settings), like a second channel. I also have some straight up rock'n'roll type presets that are just FX in 4cm to the Tweaker set up like a Marshall. The Tweaker is a very flexible amp. Something a lot of people are doing is using a 1 or 2-12 guitar cab with a class D amp like the Powerstage. I've got an EHX .44 Magnum as a backup (in case a tube blows) that I haven't got around to trying yet. So I'm happy right now with the Tweaker (12ax7/6v6) and although I'd like to try the Powercab+, I fear that what I didn't like about the FRFR112 (and my Alto TS210) is the tweeter. The FRFR112 is crossed over at 2khz and the Alto at 2.5khz, so it's really hard to eq out that nasty raspy sound without just killing the overall tone. And while the Powercab is designed for the job, it's got a (defeatable) tweeter, I just don't know.....Lotto Lotto Lotto

Fortunately, I'm not a serious recordist, so no major projects to port over. The only plugins I really cared about were Dimension Pro and Addictive Drums, both of which work fine outside of Sonar. This is the reply I got from XLN Support when I asked: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Thanks for getting in touch. The version you got from your Cakewalk purchase is a full version for AD2 and thus can be used in any DAW that we support. All you will need to do is to make sure that your new DAW is searching in the correct folder for the AD2 plug-in. If you no longer have Sonar on your computer then you may need to re-install your AD2 plug-in. Do this by running the Online Installer and making sure it says everything is up to date. If it asks you to repair or update your installation. Please allow it to do so. Don't hesitate to get back to me if you need any further assistance. Wishing you all the very best. Best regards, Nick Hutton --------------------------------------- XLN Audio - Support --------------------------------------- If you were to check out the Reaper Forum, I bet you'd find a bunch of people who switched over, and would be happy to help. I wouldn't ask on the Bandlab/Sonar forum though, that could be dangerous!
